Player Ratings: Bournemouth 0-2 Man Utd

Manchester United bounced back with a comfortable win at Bournemouth this evening ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final versus Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium.

We played with more zip this evening and protected goalkeeper David de Gea very well.  Chris Smalling slid home from close range following an excellent move in the first half before Romelu Lukaku came off the bench to wrap up the three points in the final 20 minutes.

Jose Mourinho said this game was for his players to prove they deserve to start at the weekend.  Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford didn’t do themselves any harm.

Here are how our players fared:

David de Gea 6 – Comfortable game this evening in which David de Gea collected his 17th Premier League clean sheet of the season.

Matteo Darmian 5 – Ryan Fraser caused us problems down our right whilst Matteo Darmian didn’t offer crossing opportunities as Antonio Valencia usually does for us from full-back in what was a tough game for the Italian in his first Premier League start since October.

Phil Jones 8 – Solid performance in his first Premier League appearance in two months.  Josh King had a tame effort on goal but otherwise our defence performed very well this evening.

Chris Smalling 8 – Finished off a lovely move to give us a 1-0 lead and was strong in defence today as the home side never really troubled David de Gea.

Luke Shaw 7 – Had a good game up against Jordon Ibe until the Bournemouth winger was replaced.  Luke Shaw offered width down the left but couldn’t pick out a teammate with any of his cross attempts.

Ander Herrera 8 – Another energetic performance from Ander Herrera who won the ball back on several occasions.  Still doesn’t look very good in the final third which included two efforts on goal that were off target.

Marouane Fellaini 7 – Looked after the ball, won the majority of his aerial battles and was generally solid in front of our back four.  Laid the ball off to the creative players to start attacks.

Jesse Lingard 6 – Setup the opening goal in a nice move but otherwise not a huge threat in the final third.  Jesse Lingard was substituted just after the hour.

Paul Pogba 8 – A much better performance from the French midfielder who showed more energy this evening and produced a nice assist for Romelu Lukaku’s goal.  I think we’ll see Paul Pogba starting at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

Anthony Martial 7 – Teamed up well with Paul Pogba in attack but failed to test Asmir Begovic in the Bournemouth goal.

Marcus Rashford 7 – Was keen to get among the goalscorers but it didn’t happen for Marcus Rashford this evening.  The youngster saw a lot more of the ball than Romelu Lukaku when the Belgian starts up front and worked hard off the ball.  His pace was a threat to the Bournemouth defence.

Substitutes

Romelu Lukaku (28 mins) N/A – Showed good pace and a fine finish to put the game away with 10 minutes of being introduced.

Nemanja Matic (19 mins) N/A – First Premier League game the Serbian has not started this season but Nemanja Matic came on to help see out the clean sheet in the final 20 minutes.

Daley Blind (11 mins) N/A – The versatile Dutch international made his first appearance since our FA Cup win over Derby County on five January and only his sixth Premier League appearance of the season.
