Player Ratings: Man Utd 0-0 Southampton

Manchester United made it three consecutive draws in the Premier League as we were frustrated by Southampton in a 0-0 at Old Trafford this evening.

Neither side came close to opening the score after Jesse Lingard missed a good headed opportunity in the first half.

Another sour note was that Romelu Lukaku was stretchered off very early in the first half with what looked like a neck injury.  This result leaves us in third place heading into the new year.

Here are how our players fared:

David de Gea 7

Some decent saves from the Spaniard who narrowly turned a Shane Long effort over the crossbar with his foot.

Ashley Young 6

Offered good width pushing forward from right-back but failed to get any dangerous crosses into the box up against Sam McQueen on the Southampton defender’s first start of the season.

Victor Lindelof 6

Let Shane Long go for a good first time opportunity in the penalty area early in the second half but our defence looked more solid in the final half hour.  Lacked pace against the Southampton attack.

Phil Jones 7

Made some key blocks and tackles as well as sticking with Shane Long when needed.  Kept Dusan Tadic quiet.

Luke Shaw 7

Offered good width down the left as Luke Shaw bombed forward against his former club.  However, the England international failed to create anything and numerous times failed to even find a teammate.

Paul Pogba 6

Not creative enough by his standards and Paul Pogba’s only effort on goal came from about 35 yards and went into row Z.

Nemanja Matic 6

Poor decision making on the ball a number of times today and conceded possession inside his own half a few times too.  Nemanja Matic didn’t start as many attacks today as he usually does.  Showed his frustration with a couple of long range efforts that didn’t come close to hitting the target.

Juan Mata 7

Was our most creative player on the pitch but even Juan Mata couldn’t unlock the Southampton defence today.

Jesse Lingard 5

Unlucky not to have been awarded a penalty in the first half and unlucky to be booked for a Jack Stephens dive seconds after Jesse Lingard was fouled.  Otherwise not a great influence on the game.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan 4

Horribly wasted a three on three on 19 minutes with a cross 10 yards ahead of Jesse Lingard.  Henrikh Mkhitaryan wasted possession in a number of good positions today before he was finally replaced by Anthony Martial midway through the second half.

Romelu Lukaku N/A

The striker was stretchered off with a neck injury very early on.

Substitutes

Marcus Rashford (76 mins) 6 – One or two bright moments but ultimately not a threat to Alex McCarthy’s goal.

Anthony Martial 6 – Showed a couple of bright sparks immediately after coming on but ultimately produced nothing in the final third.
