Player Ratings: Sevilla 0-0 Man Utd

A disappointing performance from Manchester United ended in a 0-0 draw in the first leg of our Champions League second round tie at Sevilla.

We fired in only two efforts on target all game whilst David de Gea was forced into a number of saves, including a couple of spectacular ones.

Despite starting on the bench, Paul Pogba was introduced as early as the 17th minute following a hamstring injury to Ander Herrera.

Here are how our players fared:

David de Gea 9

Made a good save to deny Luis Muriel inside the opening four minutes and denied the same striker from four yards in first half stoppage time.  David de Gea made a number of other smart stops too.

Antonio Valencia 5

Joaquin Correa caused the captain a lot of problems down the wing.  This included the Argentine cutting inside the Ecuadorian inside the penalty area to create two chances for himself.  Otherwise Antonio Valencia tracked the winger fairly well.  Offered nothing going forward though.

Victor Lindelof 7

Made one important interception on the stroke of half-time to deny a one-on-one but moments later nearly gifted the home side an excellent chance.

Chris Smalling 6

Sevilla were able create a few chances in and around the penalty area, notably Luis Muriel as we weren’t overly solid at the back despite the clean sheet.  Poor positioning from Chris Smalling.

Ashley Young 7

Good defensive performance from Ashley Young but the 32-year-old didn’t create anything going forward.  Kept Pablo Sarabia relatively quiet.

Nemanja Matic 8

Excellent performance in front of the back four as Nemanja Matic picked off numerous Sevilla passes and made a few tackles to prevent the Spanish side getting deeper in our half on more occasions.  Lacked quality on the ball though.

Scott McTominay 6

Sensible game in midfield, also winning his fair share of aerial battles.  Had one of our very rare shots on target this evening.  However, Ever Banega did find time and space on the ball on a number of occasions for the La Liga side.

Ander Herrera N/A

Suffered a hamstring injury on 16 minutes and went off.

Juan Mata 5

Created nothing out wide on the right nor tested Sergio Rico.  Juan Mata may have completed a high percentage of his passes but none of them opened up the Sevilla defence.

Romelu Lukaku 6

Limited supply for our striker again this evening as Romelu Lukaku once again failed to test the opposition goalkeeper in 90 minutes.  Had an effort disallowed for handball but did chase down every ball.

Alexis Sanchez 6

Sevilla fouled the Chilean often and quickly to deny Alexis Sanchez causing any problems.  The forward was studded high on the leg by Steven N’Zonzi in the first half and later kicked in the head.  Simply wasn’t allowed to make an impact on the game.

Substitutes

Paul Pogba (73 mins) 6 – A couple of nice touches and did force a save out of Sergio Rico, but otherwise not a dominating performance from the French star.

Marcus Rashford (17 mins) N/A -Didn’t get too many touches but did fire two efforts tamely off target.

Anthony Martial (12 mins) N/A – Anthony Martial didn’t get a shot in and had very few touches of the ball.
