Romelu Lukaku scored the only goal as Manchester United were 1-0 winners at Southampton this afternoon.
The Belgian scored with his second effort in the six-yard box after a fine save from Fraser Forster following excellent work and cross from Ashley Young down the left wing.
We were on the backfoot in the second half, only forcing one save out of Fraser Forster. However, a goalline clearance from Marouane Fellaini was the only time we were seriously tested.
Here are how our players fared:
David de Gea 7
Made a couple of standard saves but was beaten by a header from a corner which was cleared off the line by Marouane Fellaini
Antonio Valencia 7
Had a tough afternoon against Nathan Redmond who forced a couple of saves out of David de Gea and created most of Southampton’s other chances in this game. Antonio Valencia barely stepped out of his own half after the break.
Eric Bailly 8
Shane Long didn’t get a sniff on goal this afternoon and Manolo Gabbiadini barely got a touch of the ball after coming on in the final 20 minutes.
Phil Jones 8
An heroic performance from Phil Jones who made a number of tackles, a couple of interceptions and numerous clearances today. Put Oriol Romeu off from three yards out too but there were a couple of clumsy moments including bundling over Shane Long on the edge of the box that went unnoticed by the referee.
Ashley Young 8
Excellent assist for Romelu Lukaku’s goal. Southampton looked to test Ashley Young defensively at the start of the second half but the England international stood firm defensively as Dusan Tadic showed very little threat.
Nemanja Matic 6
Southampton had 61% of the possession as Nemanja Matic and Marouane Fellaini struggled to win the ball back for us. The Serbian also played a few sloppy passes and carelessly conceded a corner in stoppage time.
Marouane Fellaini 8
An excellent hardworking effort from Marouane Fellaini who made a goalline clearance in the second half. We’ve not conceded a single goal when the Belgian has been on the field this season.
Juan Mata 6
Very quiet afternoon for the Spaniard this afternoon. Juan Mata was replaced by Ander Herrera on the hour as Jose Mourinho went more and more defensive as the game went on.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan 6
Could have done much better on two occasions in the first half with possession on the edge of the area but for a bad touch and bad decision making. Henrikh Mkhitaryan tried to offer a counter attack threat in the second half but it never happened.
Marcus Rashford 6
Worked well off the ball but not much of an attacking threat today, particularly in the second half.
Romelu Lukaku 8
On hand to score the game’s only goal with help of Wesley Hoedt slipping inside the six-yard box. Romelu Lukaku put in a hardworking effort off the ball but didn’t have much support in the second half to cause further threat.
Ander Herrera 7 – Excellent at getting stuck in during the half hour on the pitch but Ander Herrera was poor in maintaining possession for us, particularly as we could have done with seeing more of the ball in the final half hour when we were constantly pinned in our own half. Fired an excellent opportunity over the bar.
Chris Smalling 6 – Brought on to help see out the final quarter-of-an-hour. Collided head-to-head with Phil Jones.
Daley Blind N/A – Came on in stoppage time to help run down the clock.
