Possebon Loan ‘Cancelled’; Returns to United?
If reports in the Portuguese media are to be believed Rodrigo Possebon, who was loaned out to SC Braga, has returned to Manchester. Google translate is not the best, but according to this link, he’s been axed because of a squad trimming exercise by the coach.
I also saw it mentioned on the United Youth site in its roundup of our loanees. It’s a bit surprising it hasn’t been mentioned in the main United website.
Anyone who has any updates on this, do share in the comments.

@Stephen: The coaching staff should take the bulk of the blame yes. Why should they not? You say a lot of people think he is an attacking midfielder. No we know that’s what he is. That’s what he played as with great success at both his previous clubs. It’s because some of us actually watched him before he came here. Watch the U-17 World Championships when he won the Golden Ball. Watch him at Porto. In the first half of his debut season he performed well, even if he was not played in his optimum role but he had attacking duties since he had come in to cover for the injured Scholes. When Scholes returned he was transformed into Edgar Davids. He is not even Scholes’ replacement. You can be a central midfielder but no two are alike. Some are DMs like Makelele, some sit back like Pirlo and Carrick and Alonso, some are all over the place like Gerrard. Then you have the Diegos and Kakas and Modrics who move the team forward with ball at their feet and are always looking to attack from the middle at pace. That’s Anderson’s category.
I’ll blame him for his lack of committment in pushing himself in training. But he seems to be correcting that as of late. But you just can’t ignore the poor decisions of our technical teams

@Jay wire: The same coaching staff who have developed many of our players past and present, give me a break.
Anderson has not developed simply becuase he has not applied himself enough, blaming the coaches is a cop out he has himself to blame for not working hard enough in training and constantly messing around, and if he is the future of our attacking midfield then I am worried.

Can we please give Anderson a chance before we totally shoot apart his work ethic? Personally I missed training at Carrington the past few months, so I don’t know if he was puttig in the hours. I guess the press must be telling the truth then.
Of more concern is definitely the Progba case. Sounds like we’ve walked down the same path as Chelsea in our actions, and Le Havre’s president clearly has some serious Napoleonic complex going, so he’s not going to let it go quietly. So I expect us to be punished. (Evra first).
If we do, and get a transfer ban, I wonder what it would do to the team morale? We have a strong enough squad to cope, much better than Chelsea anyway (we presumably would just lose Giggs, Scholes, VDS and Neville – whereas Lamps, Ballack, Deco, Drogba, Anelka, Carvalho and so on would all be pretty old…) and maybe it would turn us into even more of an institution. Dunno. Personally I agree with banning transfers of any players before the age of 18 if they’re enrolled in an academy. But I also don’t think that Chelsea and ourselves are any worse than the other big clubs, so will look for consistency in the punishment.

@Stephen: You surprise me Bro! You really think that the coaching staff can’t mess up a players developement, or performance???? SAF himself said they did that Berba – quote – “We didn’t know how to play him.” They are still not getting the best out of him from what I have seen in the few games this season. I agree that Andi needs to look to improving his own game performance by putting in more effort, but what about Nani and players like him. Everybody was saying he didn’t make the right decisions blah blah blah, I am saying he didn’t get the bloody chance to this last season. He was the scapegoat made outsider because of the Berba big money buy error. Nani showed loads of what he had 1st season, was 2nd highest in assists, and scored some great goals himself. Last season he did very well in the cup games he played in, but still got criticised by numptee fans
. A player/s need confidence to hit top form, and they are not going to get that with arses parked permanently on the bench. Scholesy and Giggsy are on their last year probs, so the kids should be getting much more playing time. Nani and Andi are more than kids though. So yeah, I beg to differ with you Stephen my laddo!

@Craig Mc: I like to keep you on your toes!!

I cannot blame the coaching staff in this instance for Anderson, you may look a the manager for not playing him but when he has played of late he hasn’t played well and a friendly and reserve game do not count.
It was not the coaching staff who made him air foot the ball in Rome, or go to pieces everytime he sets foot in a penalty box like a jigsaw, other players have developed under these coaches sometimes you have to look at the player and he has to take some responsibilities for his own form.
Maybe he is simply at the wrong club United may be too big for him or he hasn’t settled, but saying he was excellent at the under 17′s World Champs or looked promising in the Portuguese league doesn’t quite cut it for me, you can only deal with the hear and the now.
There are plenty of players who looked like they would be World beaters in ther youth but never lived up to the hype, I hope he isn’t one of them becuase we desperatly crying out for a top class centre mid and I won’t right him off just yet but the signs don’t look good currently.

@Stephen: Actually you can blame the coaching staff.
My belief is management is completely responsible for a club. If something is not right, they need to sort it out. If a player does not perform, then that needs to be addressed. It’s like a MD at a company being accountable for whatever happens in that company.
In this case (forgetting my Anderson bias for a moment), consider the logic in this scenario:
1. We invested a massive fortune in a young, ‘talented’ player, knowing we need to develop him
2. He degress for over a year due to ‘not showing effort in training’
As much as what this is a bad trait of him, it is also a bad management trait (and in this case our coaching staff) to allow that to happen. That is the same as flushing money down the toilet. The argument might hold against a young unproven youngster, but once you pay EIGHTEEN MILLION POUNDS for someone (and pay him a weekly wage on top of that), it now becomes your responsibility. If he did not want to adhere to the standards, or does not meet the standards, he should have been shipped off.
I hope you can understand this because in this case, it is not a matter of me being anti-SAF or pro-Anderson.

“In response to the wholly unfounded comments widely reported in the media of Le Havre AC President, Jean-Pierre Louvel, Manchester United wishes to categorically confirm that as a matter of club policy, and in accordance with the applicable football regulations, it does not offer inducements to the parents of players that sign for the club, such as monetary payments or the purchase of houses.
Manchester United has today written to Le Havre AC to put it on notice that action will be taken if such allegations are repeated in relation to the transfer of Paul Pogba.
Manchester United is entirely satisfied that the transfer of Paul Pogba has been conducted in accordance with the regulations set down by the world governing body, FIFA. Manchester United is ready to defend any claim brought against it by Le Havre at FIFA.
It is to be noted that all contractual documentation relating to the player’s registration with the club has already been fully ratified by The Football Association and the Premier League.”
Posted on ManUtd.com in the last hour. Sorry to quote the whole thing but I think it is relevant to our discussions. I don’t think we could possibly sound more confident in our actions, and I’m glad we’ve come out and made a statement. Le Havre are chancers, nothing more.

@Karl: Karl I hold you in too high regard to consider you would be so short sighted matey.
Matey the blame maybe is two fold, the player has to take some responsiblity for poor performances as well as the management who maybe have tried to make him more of a defensive player than he would have liked.
With young players you have to expect inconsistancy and dips in form he does need more game time and if he does he needs to take it with both hands.

@Grognard: Seeding a team like Spain wouldnt make sense, what history do they have? How many titles. Have they ever won the world cup. If they didnt win Euro 08 they would be nowhere. Netherlands too. How many world cups have they won. England havent won a trophy since 1966 mate. Guaranteeing them a place would just be making the countries spoilt. If there good enough ie… Brazil, Holland theyl qualify, if not stuff them
The Portugal team right now is complete garbage. They dont have ONE striker. The England team too. They enjoy beating absolute shit but cant against decent opposition. Its all names.

@Karl: I myself love anderson to bits, and am currently disappointed with the way he has been acting, yet i have to defend him when people insult and mark out his poor form, how do you expect a person to have form when they are constantly rotated, especially at a young age? a typical anderson month follows this pattern
Plays champions league match
bench on the weekend for the premier league
substitute appearance the week after in the premier league
plays 60 minutes of carling cup
not on the bench the weekend later
plays substitute role in the champions league
plays 70 minutes in the premier league
rinse lather repeat
Now this can be blamed on anderson having poor stamina, however how is a player expected to do well if he’s not getting consistent minutes? name me one player who does well playing that much, its almost as if not matter how well he plays he will still be condemned to the bench, and if he plays poorly he will be chastised, for example the champions league final, people say anderson was horrible after playing so well against arsenal in the semis before hand, now lets look at how many minutes anderson player after the away leg at arsenal on which he was substituted after 70 minutes
on the bench vs manchester city
started against wigan played 60 minutes
played 2 minutes vs arsenal he did not even get a sniff of the ball
did not play against hull
so that is a whopping grand total of 62 minutes out of a possible 360, and then you throw him in the deep end against arguably the best midfield in the world, now i am not defending anderson entirely, i have heard rumours and stories that suggests he mucks around in training which he has to change, volunteering to play for the reserves is a massive first step and he has to improve, first an foremost his fitness, then he needs to gain his confidence back so he has his swagger and flair at which he possessed in an abundance at porto and gremio and i really do hope he does start against spurs this saturday as i feel the boy has a lot to prove

@Stephen: Portugal not necessarily deserving to be there is why they are not one of my eight seeded teams. I guess right now it sucks to be Ronaldo. But I do feel for Argentina. You are so right. You hire a fat out of shape drug addict with a criminal past and this is what you get. He probably has thrown all those games because he either owes the mob or he is making a financial killing through the mob. I wouldn’t put anything past this Primadona, not Maradona. The thought of no Tevez at the World Cup is a nice thought but seriously, the idea of no Messi or Aguero there makes me sick.
What makes me even sicker is Maradona getting all personal and forcing Riquelme to quit the team. Since then, Argentina has gone into a slide. No Riquelme at the center of their midfield is one of the reasons for their slide as well. That an Diego’s arrogance that the team should play 4-3-3 which for them does not work because without Riquelme they never had the midfield maestro to make it work.

@Dan: And yet onemust not forget that Portugal went far in the last World Cup finishing 4th, 3rd in EURO 2004 so they have had a certain amount of success. But yes, unfortunately even under my plan, it looks like Ronaldo would miss out on the WC. But Argentina would have to have a losing record for the next ten years of internationals for them to lose their pre determined spot in the competition. 2 World Cups and top 5 status since as far back as I can remember has earned that for them. It’s sad to see their greatest living icon and former player Maradona being responsible for their demise. Like I said earlier, he has gone from national hero to national zero.

@Craig Mc: Man this is all about bitterness with you. Give it up, it happened a long time ago. Then again, forget I said that because I still hold a grudge towards Italy for 1982. They and the cheating Brazilian ref on that afternoon cost my German team a World Cup. And they weren’t even as controversial as Maradona’s Hand of God or the Beckham incident etc. The English have every reason in the world to hate the Argentina national team and so I am not expecting you to see my point.
My point of view is that of a historian of the game and a person who likes to see the best of the best always fight it out for the top prize. I am one of those that couldn’t gives a shit about Asian teams, African teams, Central American teams being in the tournament because fro me they are a waste of time and space. Well maybe not some of the African teams. Still, it is the WC and so I have to be politically correct and fair, but I demand the best of the best be there. the teams with a tenure and a historic pedigree are who have made the WC what it is. They need to be there because of their prestige, their quality and because they traditionally breed the best stars. And the tournament needs it’s stars to showcase. Therefore, those eight seeded teams I mention have got to be automatically admitted regardless of whether we like them or not. It’s about their quality. Personally, if Italy was never ever in another international tournament would not upset me in the least. But based on their past record, they deserve to be there.

@Stephen:You are unfairly judging him by his managerial record. He is not a good manager but he is an excellent #2 and assistant coach. There are a number of factors why many great assistants never make it as great managers. They lack many of the necessary skills and abilities to deal with individuals that people like Fergie possess. But never take away from the man’s ability to be a strong #2. With that said, I don’t care if he comes back. He has left twice but I will say this, I personally think a headless chicken suffering from MS would do a better job as an assistant to the club than what I believe Mike Phelan has done. I could be wrong, but I don’t think I am.

@Taehr: They are reigning European Champions and they also won it back in the 60′s. They are also a hotbed of football containing the one of the strongest domestic leagues in the world and are in terms of fan base, finaces and overall record one of the elite teams in world football. Netherlands hasn’t won the WC either but you need eight teams as seeds because of 8 groups of four. Realistically, I could take one of them out and include Uruguay who have won the WC twice but should they get in there over either Spain or the Netherlands considering they have doen frak all for the past 40 years? Spain and the Netherlands have been elite teams in that period. Netherlands has won the EURO championship and has made to WC finals and made the final eight numerous times. Spain has won two Euro championships and has had a strong consistent winning percentage in international play for 50 years. When you only play tournament once every four years, that means you only get ten cracks in 40 years to win the WC. So one cannot seed eight teams expecting them all to have been previous winners. Pedigree counts not just by winning trophies, but by overall winning percentage for a long time.

It’s not just about winning trophies, it’s about history and pedigree. Other than the seven other teams I have seeded, who deserves to be there instead of England and why? If you look closely, England has an outstanding winning percentage since the 1950′s. Yes they have had ups and downs but overall, they are an elite team internationally.

@Dan: You have no respect for history or tradition. Why should I be surprised? Somebody who is so deeply embedded in the reserves that all he cares is that they get their chance instead of us buying proven quality players. To say you are so incredibly predictable and sad, is a massive understatement. You don’t get it and you are the last person on this blog that I would expect who would. But to base it and blame America for my thinking shows just how close minded and truly biased you are. I for one am sick and tired of your American bashing. I may be Canadian but as a Canadian I share an awful lot with the US and I for one will not tolerate this constant bashing of the country and it’s customs or ways of doing things. @Grognard: I can see you view on this, the World Cup will not be the same without the best players and teams some of the African, Asian sides the are not exactly going to light up the tournament like the Argies who probably still will qualify or the Portuguese.
The issue with football unlike tennis is that the World Cup is every four years and a lot happens in that time, look at the French so maybe the sides involved in the play offs should be randomised, in a sense a side from Europe could play a South American, Asian or Oceania so you do get the cream of the crop if that makes sense?

@Stephen: Better yet, I believe that winners of the WC should get a 25 year exemption to the tournament and winners of the Copa and the Euros get 10 years. After that, the selected eight seeds should be based on their win-loss-draw record over the past 20 or 25 years. No great team should be excluded because of a 5 to 10 game poor run. That is really what has happened to Argentina and Portugal. Overall, their records in the past 25 years have been top eight material. So they deserve to be there for being traditional and consistent winners.
I have no problem spreading the game out to the rest of the world, even to minnow continents that place useless teams in the tournament. Not as long as the top eight are there to give the tournament the class, style and skill it needs to be a true showcase.

@Grognard: Errrr no idea what you are going on about yet again Grog
. I was not talking about Andi dazzling against another reserve team, I was talking about things that I saw and I recognised that he had in his game, which cannot be learned. I already mentioned what they are earlier in this thread, so I am not going to list them again. What I would say Grog is that I am not asking you to be convinced, I don’t have to agree with you (and often don’t), and you in no way have to agree with me, (and often don’t.) That I am convinced the lad has the armoury I like, is just that I am convinced, and I will support the lad henceforth. I agree with Ole Gunner, that he has what it takes to be a good player for Man UNited. Nobody is saying that you or anyone else has to agree. Stephen doesn’t agree, I didn’t at one time, now I do, and I just hope that he can bring what he has to the table. Jeez – disagreement is no big deal to me. You support some players I don’t support and visa versa, we just have to live with it. It doesn’t bother me an iota if I am alone in my support for somebody I like. I did it for Nani for long enough, and tha MASS disagreement with my support for the lad – I used to get heated, now I don’t. What’s the point in a team qualifying for the biggest tournament in the world just because they had a couple of good players 10 yeas ago?
Entire generations of great players would never get the chance to play in the world cup because 20 years ago their country had squat. And what about new countries? Serbia are whooping France over a 2 year qualifying system, yet since they’ve only existed since 2006 it’d be 2046 before they could possibly out seat anyone. @Traverse: Good thinking Trav – I see your point exactly! The world cup is a qualifying competition every 4 years, and IF the sold called historic big teams are no longer good enought to beat the minnows, then they should not be there. Course it may not be though that the big historic teams don’t have the great players any longer, just that the Managers the associations choose may be feckin piss poor useless – like Maradona so far! Mark Hughes was saying recently that Managers like himself who had been pro footballers were better Managers than those who had not played. Yeah right – and Maradona is an ex player exactly disproving that not so great piece of so called genious from Hughes
. Managers and coaches are every bit as important as top players, and if they are useless at their jobs, their teams will NOT succeed, whether they were ex players or not, and whether they have the worlds best players or not. Maradona and Quiroz teams and their world class players are examples of that so far!

And you were not as big on Anderson until you saw his reserves game. So forgive me but you are just jumping on his band wagon in a fickle manner because frankly, the lad has nothing to offer other than dribbling at high speed and protecting the ball with his big fat ass. Other than that and the odd long distance through ball finding it’s mark, he has much less to offer than 100 central midfielders who I would prefer over him. Still, you have your opinion and I have mine. At least we both agree on Nani so it’s not like we never see eye to eye. We just don’t on Mr. Anderson.

I feel the same way about Italy. I love the country and think it’s incredible but their football and most importantly, their national team is the embodiment of evil and negativity and I absolutely despise them. Nothing would give me more joy than to see them not qualify or see Germany kick their ass, which they never seem to do because the Italians bore them into submission. Still, if I was FIFA and made the decisions about seeding eight teams, both Argentina and Italy would be picked. Six World Cups between them and a strong win-loss record cannot be ignored.
