Pundits predict Man Utd vs Huddersfield scoreline

Manchester United travel to Huddersfield Town today in the third of our four consecutive away matches in all competitions.

We are coming back from a 1-0 win at Benfica in the Champions League on Wednesday night that has seen us close in on progression to the second round.

Three points is the minimum ask today against the Premier League newcomers after we fell two points behind leaders Manchester City last weekend.

Here are what some of the UK’s football pundits are predicting for today’s game:

Mark Lawrenson

“I have said it before, but Huddersfield do not just need a win – they need some goals.

The Terriers have only scored once in their past six league games, but have started conceding them – four against Tottenham, then two versus a Swansea side who had been struggling.

But they are up against Manchester United at home on Saturday, so if you are Huddersfield manager David Wagner, what do you do?

His philosophy when I saw his side play in the Championship was to play with wide players, and people poured forward, which was great and ultimately got them promotion.

Do they do the same against United? You are asking for trouble if you do, so those goals might have to wait.

Wagner might be best off following the example of Sam Allardyce, when he was Bolton boss after they had just been promoted. He put each game into a category – ones they had to win and ones where they try to get a point.

This is definitely the latter for Huddersfield. They start the game with a point, can they finish with one?

I am backing United to go there and win, but the question is how hard will Huddersfield make them work for it?”

Lawro’s prediction: 0-2

Paul Merson

“I just don’t see Huddersfield scoring, they don’t look like scoring goals at the moment. They look a bit out of their depth.

They started well, but that squeezing game is good against sides in the division they were in last season, but in this division teams can keep the ball a lot better. Huddersfield aren’t getting the ball back as quickly as they did in the Championship.

In the Premier League teams will just go ping, ping, ping around them, like Tottenham did the other week. I can’t see anything but a Manchester United win.”

Merson’s prediction: 0-2

Michael Owen

“Manchester United’s goalless draw at Anfield showed just how good ‘The Special One’ is at continually adjusting his side for every unique test in the top-flight and I expect him to do likewise when travelling to Huddersfield Town. Jose Mourinho has lost just 2 of 39 games against newly-promoted sides in the Premier League and I expect United to win without conceding at the John Smith’s Stadium.”

Owen’s prediction: Man Utd to win to nil

Ben Pringle from the Express

“Terriers find the going tough.”

Pringle’s prediction: 0-2

75% of the pundits have gone for Manchester United winning 2-0 which would mean David de Gea keeping his eighth clean sheet in the opening nine Premier League games this season, provided he starts.

Michael Owen has too gone with a win to nil so it is a full house predicting a clean sheet at the John Smith’s Stadium today.  Huddersfield Town have not scored in their last three Premier League matches since a 1-1 draw at home to Leicester City in mid-September.

The Terriers were thrashed 0-4 at home by Tottenham Hotspur before the international break and then lost 2-0 at Swansea City last weekend.
