Raging Rooney, Real ‘Defeated’ [for Now] and the Holy Trinity
Does it concern you that our own Pele seems to lose it once in a while? Well, it scares the hell out of cabbage man Capello*. Actually Wayne Rooney has been well behaved considering his history. But Capello seems to fear for his England team mates because of the way he lunges into tackles. It’s always good to see a top manager talk sense into one of our star players, although it must be unnerving for Rooney to be listening to what is essentially a cabbage [for all 'its' merits].
Oh, and England beat the United States a couple of days ago in a snore fest. Actually it wasn’t the game that was unbearable to watch. But it was watching John Terry big up his big-match credentials in his post match that was a little hard to stomach, not to mention, the collective efforts of the whole media machine to whip up John Terry’s efforts into a frenzy. “He should courage to bounch back“, “A true fighter“, “I am a big game player“. Give me a fucking break!
That said, I don’t know why I even talked about the England-USA game on a United blog.
Anyway, it looks like Chelsea has officially become a circus — with the firing of Henk ten Cate — and I hope they don’t snap up Sparky. Any other manager would be OK by me [assuming they don't bring Jose back by some quirk of fate].
Well, this has already been talked about enough but Calderon and Real Madrid have apparently accepted defeat over their pursuit of Ronaldo. For now. Wait for another week or two, or perhaps after Euro 2008. Or they might change their mind by suddenly declaring their interest in Ronaldo whilst still managing to get away with it. Devious bastards they are, for sure.
Meanwhile something very nice has happened that somehow didn’t get posted here earlier. The statue of the United Trinity of Best, Law and Charlton was inaugurated. It’s fitting that it has come on the back of our double.
And in another slow news day I thought I’ll post these tribute videos of Georgie Best and Lawman that I was watching on Youtube.
Will add more updates to this later in the day. Till then enjoy the videos, and try to avoid discussion regarding Ronaldo.

Red Ranter - Couldnt agree wit you more on the comments bout john terry. It nearly made me sick listening to all the crap the english media were saying bout him, like “wat a difference a week makes” and “terry is def a man for the big matches” Wat a load of shit. Funny enough i heard nothing about john “cry baby” terry spitting at tezev in a champions league final!

On the four topics at hand:
I think Rooney has most definitely calmed himself down a lot. At first it sounds like a good thing, but it now brings me back to the days of when the media were talking about Rooney ‘curbing his attitude’ while anyone with any sort of football knowledge was saying that that would definitely affect his game, it may well have.
I just ignored anything sad about John Terry, “He’s a hero”, “It couldn’t have happened to a better guy”, media bias irks me.
I definitely think that Calderon is again lying through his teeth here, he may be using reverse psychology but that may be giving him a bit too much credit, he doesn’t seem to be the sharpest tool in the box.
The statue of the Holy Trinity was a very nice touch, while our new Holy Trinity is full of imagination too, the previous Holy Trinity wins it every time.
On another note, I just happened to be reading the overly biased blog Eighteenfive and they were saying things such as:
“Our £25 million man mystery man is one of the following.
* Villa
* Benzema
* Ibrahimovich
* Kaka
* Eto’o
One of these players will be joining Liverpool FC before the start of the new season. “
“This obviously rules Manchester United as they are what the Brazilians call a kick-and-rush style team. Liverpool are the only team in England that can offer him continental football, so he’s a serious contender at this stage.”
“The Liverpoool Echo are reporting that LFC will be ranked as the number one team for the UEFA Champions League next season. While this is no surprise to some, it will put the scum, rentboys and Milan, the former leaders in the their rightful place, below LFC.” …”How they can Liverpool (the best team in Europe as voted by UEFA,) 6th at 15/1 is beyond belief.
It’s so unreal it’s hilarious.

That eighteenfive blog is ridiculous. So funny…

those scousers really are deluded… i say deluded… i mean fucking stupid.
May 30th, 2008 at 13:12
The media obsession regarding John “JT” Terry, is so nausiating its untrue. He has to be the most over rated player on the planet, but I am sure we have gone over this ground before!!
The Ronnie to Real thing (yawn) is so boring but if they want the player why don’t they just make a bid?
On a better note its great to see the Trinty Statue, they are the reason why our club and its traditions are so envied across the world.
May 30th, 2008 at 13:28
we have released yet another statue, in dedication to this years champions league hero.
link.

Conor, thanks for that link. I needed a little cracker to get me going this morning.

Dude, i can’t get enough of this eighteenfive site, its fuckin hilarious. everyone needs to go and read this site. It will keep you laughing for hours.
May 30th, 2008 at 14:49
Conor that is class!!!
May 30th, 2008 at 14:52
HAHAHAHA Conor! Cheers mate! Reading that LFC blog has genuinely left me with pains in my torso due to the number of ridiculous, side-splitting jokes the blogmaster-cum-comedian decided to post. I’ll paste a few of them here to save fellow ranters hassle:
“We have a far superior squad to United”
“If we had doubled United this season we would have won the league”
“All manc fans are plastic”
(I’m not even going to bother to comment on the above statements…)
“Today their record stands at 17-3, a testament to luck and money more than anything else.” (Erm, £26m on Torres and £100m on various other rejects since 2005 and still no meaningful trophies)
“With Torres leading the line and Rafa plotting and scheming in the back ground the signs look ominous for not just the mancs but the rest of the Premiership and Europe as well.” - (Er, wasn’t that the same situation as last summer?)
“Kaka can wait another 12 months as by the summer of 2009, we will have an Abramovich-style backer” (The phrase ‘men in white coats’ comes to mind)
“Already Rafa has strengthened our defence by signing the brilliant Swiss defender Degen and is now Chasing Flourent Malouda from Chelsea….will be the final key in the jigsaw. The player that takes us to that illusive first Premier League Title and our 19th league title in total” (Yeah right, a full back who was part of the worst defence in the Bundesliga and a left winger who was in Wes Brown’s pocket for the whole of the CL Final - give me a fookin break!)
You know what; I’ll finish this with a joke of my own: What do Liverpool supporters do when they win the title? They turn off the PlayStation!
May 30th, 2008 at 15:19
Re: that eighteenfive blog
I just have to add another gem from there:
“Most Mancs wish they were scouse”
Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Need I say more….

Nino I would rather die.
May 30th, 2008 at 15:44
Holy shit, those guys at Eighteenfive guys are stupid. I just wonder. Are they ironic are do they really believe what they write. If they do, I must say that they need to wake up from their dreams.
Ninos joke- He,he, Brilliant!

Absolutely loving the Trinity statue - so appropo considering 58/68/08. It’s history like that which got me following United as a kid in the 80s even though Liverpool were the dominant force at the time.
That 18-5 blog is f**king hilarious.

May 30th, 2008 at 17:13
Eighteenfive are a bunch of muppets. Only idiots would accuse United of being a “kick and rush” team. Like all teams, especially Liverpool we will on occasion have a segment of a game where we do that but nobody other than Arsenal plays a more continental game in England than do we. Did we beat the best teams in Europe playing a British style of football? Absolutely not because had we attempted it, we would have been eliminate in the group phase. It’s very frustrating when biased observers categorize somebody or some team incorrectly just to make their case and to please their biased followers. Now we could all take the time to rant and rave and start writing terrible things about Liverpool FC and all the subhuman Scousers that support them but we won’t. Let them have their therapeutic jaunt into Fantasy Land. Their souls need it because mediocrity has reared it’s ugly head at Liverpool for two decades now and they cannot help but remember when they looked like us. Champions of England and the World is what we are and while we sit on our throne and take in the atmosphere, we must realize that there are serfs and peasants out there who are angry with envy and starving for success. I say round up those bloody parasites and force them to watch the upcoming 07-08 Season Review DVD for Manchester United. If it doesn’t scare them straight, it will at least make them sick to the point where they upchuck all that awful scouse they let fester in their unholy and demonic bellies. Bloody lowlifes!
May 30th, 2008 at 17:28
Watching the George Best video was a real treat. I love Ronaldo but after you watch Best you realize that Besty was in a class all by himself. No wasteful and often useless step overs, no tricks, just straight in your face brilliance. His moves, pace and overall dribbling ability is second to nobody. His style was more simplified but more direct than Ronaldo’s. He was also quicker in my opinion but with shorter strides. Best had more finesse and way more imagination than Ronaldo if one can believe that. Flicks and lobs were much more a part of his game where Ronaldo shows a much more power oriented game. When was the last time he chipped or lobbed one over a keeper? Also, Best played on some God awful pitches in his day while wearing old styles boots. Not the manicured parks of today that look like putting greens and the footwear that feels like slippers. No doubt in my mind that Geroge Best is the greatest United player of all time and and in the world’s top 10 at least. Nothing has happened to change my mind this season, although Ronny has definitely captured the imagination. And lets not forget, I love Ronaldo.
As for Dennis Law, watching his video just brings home the point I have been making for a year now. We need a goal poacher. Watching him made me want to turn the clocks back. What instinct and creative improvisation in the box. No wonder he scored 46 goals one year, the man was a true sniper.
Thanks for the videos RR.

Absolutely loving the Trinity statue - so appropo considering 58/68/08. It’s history like that which got me following United as a kid in the 80s even though Liverpool were the dominant force at the time.
That 18-5 blog is f**king hilarious - denial ain’t just a river in Africa.
Re: George Best video - the only player I’ve ever seen with better ball control is Maradona, I can’t offer any higher praise than that. This is not to say Best was better than Pele, et al, just that for pure ability to control the ball he is on a par with Maradona.
May 30th, 2008 at 17:43
[Everyone]
The 18-5 blog is a wind up. Meant to be tongue in cheek. All that bias is intended humour.
I’m surprised some of you appear to think it was all written in the most serious intentions.[and hence hilarious.]
No it’s just scouse laughing at scouse. Which is refreshing for a change.
May 30th, 2008 at 17:47
the guy who writes Eighteenfive is actually convinced that Liverpool have the best squad in the world. Look at the comparison post on the second page. He rates Liverpool as having the best midfield, DEFENSE and captain in the top 4. He gives the Arse top spot for strikers in a surprising move. I laughed so much at that site and I sure will be a regular visiter from now on
May 30th, 2008 at 17:50
whoops sorry RR didn’t see your comment bet my one looks stupid now
May 30th, 2008 at 17:54
RR; I thought it was a Manchester United fan pretending to be a scouser? That’s what I’ve been told.
May 30th, 2008 at 17:54
Red Ranter: Serious? Do you know the blogmaster of that site then? The way it was written doesn’t come across at tongue-in-cheek initially, since we all know how deluded the scousers can be. I noted how the articles received mostly negative responses, from United (and some Arsenal) fans who, like myself and others here, obviously thought the guy was for real. Cheers 4 clearing that up anyway RR!
May 30th, 2008 at 18:02
[Conor]
I don’t know if it was a United fan laughing at a scouse, but the theme of the blog is scouse laughing at scouse (in a sarcastic manner.) But your theory is plausible.
[Nino]
We know the scouse are deluded, but the level of delusion clearly gives it away that the blog was entirely meant to be sarcastic.
And you actually thought all that was written with serious intentions?
May 30th, 2008 at 18:09
Conor: If he was a United fan, posing as a Scouser, why would he want to slag off his own team so much? Wouldn’t that hurt him? (unless he was a fake plastic) I reckon it must be an actual Scouser, since there’s an article called “10 reasons why I hate mancs”. Now why would a Manc write something like that?
May 30th, 2008 at 18:13
Those vids were such a little treat. Thanks.
May 30th, 2008 at 18:14
Nino; But he is a United fan, pretending to be a scouser fan to give off the impression that all scousers go to the extremes of delusion as he does. Everyone is laughing at the scousers, no-one actually believes anything he writes. Therefore he is a great comedian in my eyes.
May 30th, 2008 at 18:17
Red Ranter: Yes and no to be honest. Some of the statements, like how LFC were the best team in the world, were clearly so stupendous and farfetched that not even the most deluded Scouser would come out with them. But there were other bits, like “10 reasons why we will win the title next year” that I thought the guy was for real on. But like I said before, thanks for clarifying anyway RR.
May 30th, 2008 at 18:19
This whole mess with Real Madrid will not stop now that United has complained to the heads of a puppet regime. Both UEFA and especially FIFA are not interested in helping any British club hold back the aggressive behavior of a Spanish or Italian club. They exist to aid those two nations so that they dominate the European landscape for decades to come. So now that they are not, Slack Blatter imposes the 6-5 rule which FIFA passed yesterday. This rule if it gets past the roadblocks that will be put up in th Hague will change the game in an unbelievable way. Gone will be the dominance pf the big four in all major European football nations. The playing field will become much more even. Sure the rich clubs will always buy the 5 best foreigners available but the limitations could cause domestic havoc and a terrible cutthroat competition for the best domestic talent available. I have the feeling the FIFA has enough power and support throughout Europe to challenge labor laws and win. Starting in 2012 all teams would be forced to use the new rules. On the chance that happens, not only should a team curtail it’s purchase of foreign players, but they need to spruce up their academy and also start looking at players like Richards, Barry, Agbondalahor more so than the Huntelaar’s, Berbativ’s, Benzema’s Alves, and Fabiano’s of the world. Right now we have way more than 5 top class foreigners on our team. Tevez, Ronaldo, Nani, Anderson, Park, Vidic, Evra. Add to that players we are counting on in the future like Manucho etc and we have a problem. Our home grown talent is good but some like Giggs and Scholes are on their last legs. All though we are in better shape than the other big three, we are not in Aston Villa’s territory with the number of high quality domestic players on their full squad.
My point is that we must take FIFA and their intentions very seriously. They are used to getting what they want, and they may get a ruling similar to what baseball and other sports in North America got some 40 years ago. They needed to protect their policies of drafting amateur players and signing them. Labor laws needed to be thrown out the window if smaller and less attractive teams in cities like Kansas City, Milwaukee, Cleveland and Seattle were going to stand an even chance of competing with big money cities like New York, Boston, Chicago and LA. The draft was a leftist idea that took away the player’s choice to sign for whomever he wanted. But it saved the game and the leagues from total ruin. If it were up to the have’s, the leagues would consist of no more than 6 teams in all sports. Soccer (footy) may be facing the very same problem if FIFA has it’s way. All though they are not imposing a draft system they are limiting the number of mercenaries a club can purchase. This severely hurts the big clubs and elevates the lesser clubs considerably. Lets face it, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool have not succeeded because of their domestic pool. Arsenal especially is a disgrace from a domestic talent point of view. United have several world class players from the UK and more in the Academy who have potential but is it enough? Can we beat the best teams in Spain, Italy and Germany if we are forced to dedicate more of our resources to finding domestic talent at a time when it has really dried up in the UK. I know that’s a very controversial statement but unfortunately it is true. England especially is just not producing the talent like other countries at present. France with the help of it’s former colonies is a footy factory as is Serbia and Croatia and lets not forget the Dutch, Germans, Spanish, Italians and Portuguese. How about the renaissance happening in the former Eastern Block. Russia has more fantastic young talent right now on display than England, and that’s a fact. The rosters of Zenit and CSK Moscow are littered with young players who are world class or close to it.
It is clear that the Socialist mind set at FIFA is bent on creating a European environment for football that looks like the State Farm of the USSR. Radical thinking I know, but taking the power out of the hands of the teams with money by limiting their purchasing ability is not going to make the game better. It may make it more fair from a European perspective, but it won’t help the domestic game at all. The rich teams will just buy up the best domestic talent because they will have the extra money they accumulated from fewer foreign transfers. The smaller clubs will suffer even more because they won’t be able to afford to buy or keep domestic talent.
Where this will really hurt us in the foreign competitions. Not only won’t the big four in England be allowed to carry as many foreigners, but the limitations will probably benefit the bigger European countries like Spain, Italy and Germany because they can buy and field better domestic talent. Their domestic pool is a lot richer and of higher quality than what is present in the UK today. Sorry for the dose of reality but it’s true. Add to this the purchasing power to buy abroad and I see them having a distinct advantage over our big four in European competition. That would not have been the case back in the 70’s or 80;s but it certainly is now. The Premier League has evolved into a league dominated by foreigners for the past dozen years. It will take that many years at least for England to turn it’s domestic fortunes around and start developing players who can compete with the foreigners at the highest level. More opportunities within the Prem will help this growth and development but what about our team’s prospects until then? Perhaps I’m being pessimistic but if Slack Blatter gets his way, it will lead to a new Dark Ages for English football. The UK and England especially need to throw big bucks into developing young talent and the coaching has to change. All one has to do is look at all the divisions under the Prem to realize that the talent pool is crap and that the coaching is antiquated and unimaginative.
Finally, to Fergie a loud WARNING. Sign Micah Richards and forget Alves. The stockpile of as much world class British talent right now is a must to best prevent a Euro disaster for the club’s fortunes 3 or 4 years from now. Thanks to Blatter I think British football may be placed right in the shite. And that will also make the English hater Michel Platini very happy in the process. Hopefully calmer and more logical, and law abiding heads in the Hague will prevent this communist takeover of the game that I believe will ruin British football for ten years. It will take that long as well as hundreds of millions of dollars to repair the damage and bring about our own Russian style renaissance.
May 30th, 2008 at 18:21
Conor: Ah ok. Well yeah in that case the guy is indeed a fantastic comedian! Tell him to keep them coming! I haven’t laughed that hard in ages, whether he was for real or not! Though personally I couldn’t bring myself to talk shit about my team or my city.
May 30th, 2008 at 21:30
Good point there grog. Pile that with the 90 mile youth rule and you get a cataclysmic disaster for English football.
May 30th, 2008 at 21:31
Early reports that Evra has agreed a £55,000 a week 4 year deal. Which to be honest is a bit of a disgrace when you think Sol Campbell earns nearly twice as much as him right now. It’s good to see that we have so many loyal players though, our club is one of a kind.
May 30th, 2008 at 21:40
that’s good, but i heard he wanted a 70 000 a week, twice what he’s earning now.
May 30th, 2008 at 21:50
it might have a pay increase depending on performance.
May 30th, 2008 at 22:32
bloody disgrace that is. he deserves 80 large IMO. it must be annoying for him because he is one of the best players in the squad but gets a minute amount compared to some of his colleages that have a similar importance. he should be rewarded for the 2 amazing seasons hes had with us.
May 30th, 2008 at 23:04
RedRanter, do you know were I can download the documentary that was on sky sports last night about Ryan Giggs
May 30th, 2008 at 23:26
He probably gets a height-related salary rather than a performance-related one!
May 30th, 2008 at 23:27
k9; Excellent point there mate. I totally forgot about the 90 mile rule. I doubt very much that Bayern, Real, Barca, Juve, and the two Milan’s have such a restrictive rule when it comes to signing up youth. If I’m wrong please feel free to correct me somebody. It’s just seems to me that the 6-5 idea is designed to sink the English game into complete mediocrity. Here in North America I have a problem watching some sports because of their stupid draft policies as well as their socialist salary caps. It’s all designed to create an even playing ground. My point and argument of contention is that parity is not fair and that not every city in a given country deserves to be treated or seen as a big league town. New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Toronto, Atlanta and LA are big league towns. They have the money fan support and overall population base to support a sports franchise in good times and most importantly, in bad times as well.
Cities like Kansas City, Sacramento, Hartford, Edmonton, Calgary, San Antonio and Denver are smaller cities. They should not and do not deserve to be treated with the same rules the bigger and more wealthier cities get. Why should London, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham and Newcastle have to share everything with Reading, Stoke, Hull and Portsmouth? Revenue sharing is not what I want to see and bigger teams having to horde their revenues because they are not allowed to spend due to different kinds of restrictions is just not democratic or capitalistic. If United make a lot of money, why should they be restricted in the use of that money. And should they be forced to throw money in to a pool to help the poorer clubs out? That’s the kind of crap that is happening in North America.
Baseball doesn’t have a classic salary cap in place but they have what the call a luxury tax which forces teams who spend over a restricted amount on players. Every year the NY Yankees and Boston have to give the poorer teams millions of dollars because of this socialist rule. My point in all this if Kansas City cannot afford to buy players good enough to compete with New York or Boston, then they shouldn’t be in the league. Demotion and relegation might be a great idea for minnows to be involved in but as far as I’m concerned the Prem should be no larger than 12 teams with one single relegation spot open every year. Let the minnows play with the other small fish and leave the sharks and the whales to fight it out in a smaller league. That way those 12 clubs can more evenly divide Britain’s home grown talent better so that they can compete with Europe if this asinine rule comes in to play.
May 30th, 2008 at 23:28
Fred the Red; I’m not 100% sure but I believe there is a DVD about Giggs coming out in a week. Check out Amazon.uk. I think it’s the same one.
May 30th, 2008 at 23:37
Regarding the FIFA 6-5 rule, I have a post up. You could read and continue your discussions there.
May 30th, 2008 at 23:50
[Grognard]
The primary difference in the way sports is run in the UK and in the US is this: In the US, the sports body is set up and then the franchises are created. So basically it’s like McDonalds setting up it’s franchises all over the place. The ultimate “owner” is the sport body. Without the NFL there is no Dallas Cowboys, or New England Patriots. All player image rights etc are property of NFL.
In England the clubs were created and then united under the FA or whoever. The clubs have a larger autonomy even over player image rights etc.
The sports setup is not exactly socialist because the franchises are actually under the umbrella of one corporation like the NFL or the MLB. So it’s different arms of the NFL helping each other out in revenue sharing so that it is sustainable from a business perspective. Competition would mean, if there was another independent sports body which floated its own set of franchises in the same sport and competed with the likes of the NFL for example.
Coming back to your point, you are right when it comes to allowing free movement of players, but if too much power gets vested on the best teams, then the sport will suffer as a spectacle because fans will lose interest when they realise the likes of Stoke and so on have no hope. So why haven’t they lost interest already? It’s because the fans have a tribal association with their clubs all over Europe. They will back their team through thick and thin that is the primary reason why the current English system hasn’t collapsed.
Imagine if you had the same relegation system for the average attention deficient American fan/media.

Groganard, your right about the George Best and Ronalo point, Bestie was the most naturally gifted player ever to pull on a pair of boots. He didnt posess the fancy tricks of a Ronaldo or a Ronaldinho ,but he didnt need to, his balance, close control and ability to run and change direction with the ball at pace was breathtaking and if he had been playing today on better pitches and with the stricter refereeing Ronaldo would just have to forget about trying to win world player of the year.
The genious of all the geniouses and saddly missed, cant believe He was born and bred about a mile up the road from me in a house were his father still lived up until he passed away a few months ago. A true Legend

Nice to see the trio finally honoured, its been long overdue and about the Ronaldo and Madrid saga which would make a superb episode for a mexican telenovella…does anyone think Madrid are just gonna give up. if i remember correctly, this is the second time they’ll say they’ve given up. If i were SAF, a tracking device would be on Ronaldo right now.
