Reds declare Champions’ League squad: Hargo in, Tosic, de Laet out

United have released a list of their Champions’ League squad members, and importantly, Owen Hargreaves is a part of it. The 25-man squad also includes Kiko Macheda, Gabriel Obertan and Darron Gibson. However, Anderson has been relegated to the secondary list of additional 10 members which includes Welbeck and Evans.

Curiously, Zoran Tosic doesn’t even feature in any of the lineups.

25-man squad: 1.Van der Sar, 2.Neville, 3.Evra, 4.Hargreaves, 5.Ferdinand, 6.Brown, 7.Owen, 9.Berbatov, 10.Rooney, 11.Giggs, 12.Foster, 13.Park, 15.Vidic, 16.Carrick, 17.Nani, 18.Scholes, 20.Fabio, 21.Rafael, 22.O’Shea, 24.Fletcher, 25.Valencia, 26.Obertan, 27.Macheda, 28.Gibson, 29.Kuszczak.

Additional players registered: 8.Anderson, 19.Welbeck, 23.J.Evans, 31.C.Evans, 33.Hewson, 36.Gray, 37.Cathcart, 38.Zieler, 39.Chester, 40.Amos.

Edit: Another strange exclusion is Richie de Laet

Edit 2: according to UEFA rules additional players could be added i.e., any player born on or after 1 January 1988 who has been eligible to play for the club for any uninterrupted period of two years since his 15th birthday.

Betfair is offering a free £25 bet on United.

@Stephen: I am surprised to be honest, considering he started pre-season with us. If he was to be loaned out a decision ought to have been taken much earlier, surely? The transfer window’s shut, and we can only loan him out to the lower leagues (as I understand the rules), in which case that’s a bad idea IMO.

I was delighted with Tosic in pre-season i am confused by his omission. I wanted to see alot more of him this year and now it seems like that isn’t going to be likely.
As for Anderson this seems like a decline or slippery slope for him if he doesn’t improve his attitude on and off the field, he needs to put in a bigger effort on the pitch and run and try hard not just stroll around.
I am a big fan of Ando’s but he has to lift alot more to stay in the team.

@Cyclops-Red: It is due to their date of birth, Fergie can pick 25 plus people who were born after 1st Jan 1988 as additionals, basically a fiddle of the rules.

It’s pretty obvious why Tosic is out of the squad, simple, it’s because he rates Obertan ahead of him. I’ve watched several videos of Obertan and he does seem much better than Tosic. In my opinion, SAF did get a `Ronaldo replacement` and that’s Obertan, but he’s not putting much hype on him as of yet till he starts featuring. He’s gonna put United off theirs seats once again including myself.

If he was a stalking horse, is he going to move on? like manucho? are we officially becoming a conveyor belt? I thought Tosic showed promise too. Obertan seems the bigger, faster winger though. But De Laet?!!!

    ReplyReply
  17. Craig Mc says:

Mmmmmm, I am surprised! The N’castle manager seems to think they had the Cathcart year loan almost sewn up  . The DeLaet omission is a big surprise too, seeing as Wes, Red Nev, and the Da Silva twins are injury prone! I cannot see the wisdom of the Obertan inclusion in the main 25, because we have seen nothing of him yet to know what he can do in PL, let alone CL and whether he will fit into our team play and formations. SAF must know something I don’t know  .

The SAF/Anderson bust up in my opinion was a definate occurence, regardless of the denials mouthed at the press conference  . I mean the lad seems to be in the OT Leper colony, and chewing out Macheda, a SAF favourite, has cost Anderson muchly it seems. Bit like Ronnie/Ruud training ground bust up, which led to Ruud being in the big freeze area of the cold shouldered – .

Tosic is no surprise because from what I’ve seen, he’s not that good. I still believe he was bought in order to convince Ljajic to sign. I must say that I am very disappointed that Obertan was picked over De Laet. De Laet has shown himself to be a very strong player capable of playing anywhere on our back line and also having the skill, poise and pace to attack with conviction and a quality end play. Obertan for me is an enigma and I just don’t understand what more De Laet needed to do to get some frakken respect. In fact, I am surprised he hasn’t started every game at RB because he is faster and more dynamic than bot O’Shea and Brown and is also a strong tackler. Brown has also been poor as he is not yet in game shape. I don’t get it. Instead we are forced to endure more of the older and even more useless Gary Neville. Man I will hold a party when this old guard finally all retire. There is such a thing as overstaying your welcome. Thanks for the years of service, but it’s TIME ALREADY.

Hargo. Finally some encourging news on that front. It almost feels as if he’s a new signing. I hope, pray as well that he is ok and fit to play come October so as to reach match fitness say December. Oh, and lets also hope he doesn’t get one of those pesky “set backs”. Shame if he should experience anything like that because it will definatley effect his moral even more so than being out of the field for so long.

His return has boosted my confidence in this team because he is without a shadow of a doubt one of our pillars in MF.

Hasn’t Cathcart gone out on loan? does that mean he can swap De laet for him as he has now to be ommitted from the squad listing?

  22. Craig Mc says:

Apparently according to reports up here, N’Castle offered 1.75 million quid for Cathcart, which Man Utd refused. So they are still hoping to get the loan deal within the next 4 weeks. Is it likely if SAF has named him in CL squad?

I wonder why the staff at United don’t see in DeLaet what most fans, ex Man Utd pros, and the England mananger Capello, see in him. After the game he played against Valencia, Capello was saliving, collaring Bryan Robson, to find out who this right back was. Robbo said, he sadly had to disappoint Capello telling him unfortunately DeLaet is Belgian born. Also DeLaet is in wonderland at United, and said he called all his family to come over to England, and watch the Hull game, because he was included in the squad  .

  23. Red Ranter says:

@Merlinus: de Laet was born after Jan 1st 1988. I rate de Laet higher than Cathcart. Which is why it’s surprising he was chosen ahead of de Laet.

    ReplyReply
  24. Red Ranter says:

@Craig Mc: To be fair we need to give credit to the United staff for seeing what Stoke couldn’t see in him and bringing him here in the first place. He was brought in supposedly as back up, but he’s grown in influence. When I first saw him at Hull last season I was surprised he came this far (because I didn’t think much of him before then — admittedly it’s because I hadn’t seen him play before that). So whilst their handling of de Laet is puzzling right now, let’s give them sometime eh?

@Red Ranter: I think they have to be born after Jan 1st 1988 AND have 2 uninterrupted years playing for the club, which Evans and Anderson has, but Gibson was on loan two years ago, so his time has been interrupted.

As for Hargo, I’ll believe it when I see it. He was in the CL squad last year only to be taken off in December for Macheda and Petrucci. Speaking of, surprised to see Petrucci has been left off and hasn’t been given any time (or is he still hurt?).

Apparently Possebon has been dropped from the team he was on loan with and is on his way back to Manchester. Not sure what that means for the lad.

No one is mentioning the dissappearing act of Rafael, unless I’ve missed it. Fergie let slip that he and Edwin are our only long term injuries – but what the hell is wrong with him? I still don’t know if he is actually our RB problem solved, given that neither twin can seem to manage to stay fit for 90 minutes at a time.

De Laet looked good in the two matches we’ve seen him – but that’s not enough to go all crazy imo. He’ll never be a world class centre back – too tiny (and don’t give me that Cannavaro crap…) but he might well be a decent shout at right back.

I think Fergie is stuck in a catch 22 with the RB position. I would have thought his preference would go:
    1. Brown
    2. Rafael
    3. Neville
    4. De Laet/other

However, Wes isn’t fit and needs games to get there. He’s also no spring chicken. Rafael can’t string two matches together. Neville is done and Fergie’s the only one who doesn’t realise it and everyone else is unproven. So what does he do? Start with a risky unknown or a returning to fitness trusted player?

I think we’ll all stop being worried about it once hte games ramp up to 2 a week, at which point everyone will be playing.

De Laet is not involved because he is still young, and when coming through the ranks Fergie doesnt like to rush them. Welbeck, Gibson, Evans, even the youngers of Becks, Giggsy and Scholesy. This squad is only for the CL group stage, so if De Laet really proves his worth this could mean he will be involved in the latter stages of the competition. If not, I wont be surprised because its typical Fergie! Trust the master!

@ Brad, the 2 squads makeup has got nothing to do with favouritism/doghouse politics, its got to do with Fergie using the rules to include as many players as possible. The reason Anderson is on the second list is because of his birthdate, you can have as many younger players born before a certain date who have had 2 yrs uninterrupted service with the club on the “b” list therefore allowing someone, like Gibson to have the “a” list place because he wouldn’t qualify for the “b” list. Does this make it any clearer?

Tosic, De Laet and Petrucci not in A list as there are 25 better players ahead of them and they don’t qualify for B list as they have not been at the club at least 2 years. Of the players who had Premier League squad numbers last year and are not away on loan now the only other player not in CL squad is James(I think he just played the last game of the Premier League as number 47). The CL rule of players under 21 and been at the club 2 years really impacts on the signings of a club, maybe why Sir Alex didn’t want anymore players for now. It will be interesting if Ljajic and/or Diouf make the CL squad in Feb for knockout stages if United progress, and if so I wonder who would be dropped from the squad if that happened. No need to loan out De Laet, Tosic or Petrucci as they are still available for all the other matches. De Laet and Tosic in particular will add freshness off the bench after or before CL games and in the cups.

Guys as explained at the top of the forum, being in the main 25 or the additional players list doesnt make a difference to a players position in the team or squad. Jonny Evans, Anderson, Welbeck etc all meet the additional criteria list which allows SAF to add other players to the main list who do not have the criteria for the additional list. For example if SAF would have put Anderson on main list there would be no room for Gibson etc. Da silva twins did not qualify for the additional criteria therefore made the main 25 as they have been registerd with Utd for 1 season previously. Tosic and De Laet both did not make the additional criteria again and if included had to be part of the main 25. This therefore means that they were simply left out as SAF felt others were more suited to play in this seasons champions league competition. We could say that Obertan who has CL experience was probably included over Tosic as he is still very petite and needs to bulk up to play at the top level which will come in the next 12 monts or so and De Laet simply wouldnt play ahead of Brown, Fabio, Rafael, O shea regard;ess of his impressive performances. Therefore those saying Ando relegated to additional squad etc due to fall out with SAF are incorrect and Evans simply in it due to meeting the criteria and allowing others who are not part eliginle such as Macheda as only been a first team player at the club for one season to be included in the main 25

Why were we so eager to pay 8m for Tosic in January if he has not even featured in the 1st team yet? I’m really curious to know who convinced whom that he was good? IMHO, this is another example of an expensive dud buy.

I don’t buy the “to get Ljajic” theory. That’s a bad way of doing business. Besides, if Ljajic was really that good or important, I’m sure SAF would have changed the arrangements to get him here now (after Ronaldo sale), because it is obvious we lack creativity.
IMO, he will also take at least a year or two to settle in.

Fergie will surely not risk him by rushing him onto the pitch. So, his inclusion in the CL squad is strange, but Fergie might know something i don’t.

In January do you think Diouf and/or Ljajic will make the 25 man A list and if so who will they replace as they won’t be eligible for the B list?

Also when is Diouf due to get his work permit? Will it definately be before Jan 1 when he gets to Manchester? I wonder where Sir ALex will have him in the pecking order of his strikers, maybe 5th, with Macheda 4th and Welbeck 6th? I’m not sure, looking forward to seeing how good he is, along with Obertan and Ljajic.

Just saw on the United site that Diouf may not necessarily come to United in Jan and that he may stay away on loan for the rest of the season, but Ljajic will be in MAnchester in Jan for sure.

So if that happens I would like to see Ljajic go into the 25 man A list in Jan to take the spot of Gibson.

Really do hope Diouf arrives in Jan as United need more firepower off the bench especially if there are injuries and suspensions to the top 3 strikers.

    @Traverse: What about his age?

Why has Macheda not been on the bench at all in August?

It’s a shame de Laet did not fit into the 25 man A list as his versatility at being able to play anywhere in the back 4 would have been good insurance, oh well not to worry.

@Karl: I believe the reason we loaned him back to Partizan till January 2010 is that we can’t bring him over till he’s 18 (same happened with Da Silvas). I think it’s to do with work permit applications. His 18th birthday is the 27th of this month, meaning he can come over in the next transfer window.

Sir Alex is considering loaning out Cathcart next week to Newcastle(despite Cathcart being given a CL squad number) but how is that possible outside the transfer window? Or can loan deals be done outside the window OK? Is the window only for permanent transfers?

I found some info on my above question -

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/8230976.stm

It says loan deals are allowed in the Football League(Championship,League1,League2) one week after the transfer window ends, so as Cathcart would be going to a Football League side in the Championship, Newcastle, then it seems like it might be OK. If anyone has info to suggest this is wrong then let me know, but if not I’ll assume this info is correct.

This info does not go into detail about any clause in a loan deal which could allow a players loan deal to end early like in the case of Possebon but maybe every loan deal is different in that sense and it’s allowed.

@Grognard: lads sorry to take you back to history. i’ve been away and had little access to internet. on the issue of calling SAF a racist, c’mon lads in my post i didn’t mention anywhere SAF being a racist, being a patriot isn’t anywhere close to a racist and that’s what i exactly meant.

for all those who havent been in football management at all, every manager wants to retire and boss around that he brought up so and do perhaps from his country or region. Fletcher is good now but how many players who were better him left, being a home boy SAF had to be patient with him. So that when he retires on top of doing alot to the english game, he can boss of bringing a captain fantastic for scotland.

Does anyone recall the statement Sparky made when he was signing Craig Bellamy, can anyone tell me why there was an influx of British players when Brian Kidd was SAF’s assistant and an influ of Latin players to United in Carlos Queiroz reign as SAF’s second hand man.

Let any of you go to football management and you’ll all know what i mean. it all goes back to people you’ll easily work with and to Patriotism.

Anyway, dont you guys see what’s happening at Arsenal, what happened and Chelsea during Mours time, aren’t you seeing Martinez is doing arent seiing what Zola has always tried to do though he’s failed due to problems at the club.

The CL squad is strong enough to win the CL group and with the addition of Ljajic and Diouf in January they can win the CL.
