Rooney: “De Gea is the best in the world”

1203791-25145109-2560-1440Wayne Rooney has described David De Gea as the best keeper in the world, after the Spaniard pulled off a string of superb saves to deny Raheem Sterling and Mario Balotelli on Sunday.

Despite having to play with a different back four almost every game, De Gea’s form this season has been nothing short of outstanding and Rooney was quick to heap praise on his teammate.

“He’s the best keeper in the world,” said Rooney.

“He’s shown great form and some of his saves are incredible.

“Edwin van der Sar had the best years of his career when he was with us in his late 30s so David has a great future ahead of him. If he keeps working hard the way he is, he will have many years at the top.”

Having struggled to settle in the Premier League when he first joined United, De Gea has since developed into arguably the best goalkeeper in the world and Rooney said United players aware that the former Atletico Madrid man might need time to adjust to English football.

“To play in goal for United at 20 is difficult, especially trying to replace Van der Sar, who was a fantastic keeper,” said the United captain.

“We knew it might take time with David and it did. The first six months, probably a year, it was hard but he worked hard on his game and it shows.”
