Rooney issues United warning

Louis van GaalWayne Rooney has warned Manchester United to cut out their mistakes or otherwise they run the risk of miss out on a top four finish come the end of the season.

Saturday’s defeat at Swansea left United fourth, just a point ahead of Southampton and only two points ahead of Liverpool, while Spurs’ last minute draw against West Ham meant the North Londoners are within three points of Louis Van Gaal’s side.

With Arsenal overtaking United in third and Liverpool closing the gap after a fortuitous win at Southampton Rooney said his side must hit back immediately.

“We need to hit back next week [against Sunderland]. It is a must-win game,” he said.

“There are still a lot of games to go and we have to bounce back from this quickly, go on another good run and try to keep us in a good position to finish in that top four.”

United host Sunderland on Saturday and travel to Newcastle three days later but they still have to face all the top four sides as well as Liverpool as Tottenham over the next two months.

Despite dominating possession and camping in Swansea’s half for large spells of the second half, United never looked like getting back into the game once Jonjo Shelvey had put the hosts ahead.

“We dominated but maybe didn’t test the keeper enough up until they scored, that’s disappointing given the play we had,” said Rooney.

“It was one-way traffic and it felt like that on the pitch, it felt like a matter of time.

“We were putting them under pressure but they did defend the box well, putting bodies in front of the ball, but this is a blow for us, coming away from today with no points having played like that.”
