I think SAF squashed my fears of not still having the 80m, as i think he wouldnt make fun of arse winger for not being able to spend the money he gets from citeh.
” Arsenal have got the biggest test to be where they want to be, I think. I know that Arsene Wenger doesn’t have any money, I know that. I think that selling Adebayor — well, whether he can use that money is another question. There seems to be evidence that he can’t use the money, I don’t know. I think they’re struggling cash-wise. It’s a big test for Arsenal.”

“We didn’t try to buy Ribery, we explored it in a nice, quiet way when David Gill was at one of his meetings with Bayern in March,” said Ferguson. “They told him, ‘absolutely no chance’ and the one thing you can say about Bayern is that, when they say something, they mean it.
“When we negotiated with them over Hargreaves, at the beginning they said ‘no’, but they also said that, if it ever changed, their minds, we’d be the first to know.
“It was exactly the same this time. There is no way that they will sell Ribery.”
does this mean we may still have a chance at ugly frank?

To all the Ranters (Commentators) on the blog and specially to all the Berba basher i want to put something for the discussion/ Debate:
I know most of the people who support Manchester Utd feels that Berba wasn’t the success in his debut season. I know on what account you say that. I mean do say this because he scored only 14 Goals and Almost same amount of assists so contributing to only around 25 goals??? The answer in my mind is ‘BIG NO’.
In the back of your head you all seem to relate his performance to the cost we incurred to hire his services i.e. close to GBP 30.75 mn which i don’t say is totally wrong. To add to that I am sure if we would have been able to buy him for say GBP 20 mn then it would have considered as a good if not great buy….But then a thought came to my mind….
Now, in the wake of the development in last few weeks the thought which came to my mind was what will be the gauge that you will use to rate Ronaldo now??? I mean if he will score say 35 goals in next season then will he regarded as a success… If you say in normal circumstances if the midfielder scores that amount of goals then its a superlative achievement but then if we apply the same rule of Berba to him saying that he costs his team 80 mn then 35 goals is no good. Here, some people may come up with the influence on team and all but then i don’t think he will have the same amount of luxury there as he was having with us…
So then in that case how will you judge Berba as a First season or where do you see Ronaldo should be to justify his price….

Ronaldo is the greatest player on the planet, madrid are trying to build another galactigos, probably so that the fans forget the 6-2 drumming
they received under barca. They had to get ronaldo to appease the fans atleast. And they had to rebuild the team coz the one they had last year was a joke. beaten home and away and embarassed by the scousers, madrid dont know how to build talent they buy finished products.

Regardless of how many goals Ronaldo scores he is great value for £80 million. Real have got a player who can single handedly win matches against any opposition, not to mention create space for everyone else. In the Spanish League where the defences are not as strong and referees give players more protection he is gonna rip it up and murder every team.
He hardly ever gets injured, can play two games a week for an entire season with no problems whatsoever…..really he is good value for 80 mill.
He is SO much more than just a goalscorer. If he was a striker yeah you’d expect 45 goals a season. But he is a winger and there is so much more to his game and you are paying 80 million for the full package and really he is the most complete attacking player since Ronaldinho.
Interestingly Giggs thinks we will go back to 4-4-2 with the signing of Valencia. Im not sure our central midfield is strong enough for that UNLESSS Hargreaves makes a full recovery and stays fit. But it would certainly bring the best out of Berbatov and Rooney.

@colver: Yeah i agree! If we really revert to 4-4-2, which should be the logical thing after Valencia purchase then, it will definitely bring out the best of Berba and Rooney.. But, provided that they are playing where they should be.
In my opinion Rooney should play of Berba not other way around which Fergie did try last year. I mean that case he was playing both players in the alien’s territory.
Moreover, we will definitely need a stronger CMF then what we have right now. And, honestly I am not that sure of OH anymore.
But then who else we can target.. I mean we all have scratched our head for last 6 weeks but can’t seem to find an common solution… Can we???

@Onkar: Well you are obviously forgetting his marketability as a sports icon (probably only rivals Beckham – something not true even for the likes of Kaka, Messi) and his age (24 so his best yet to come as Fergie put it. DB9 is on the other hand is 28, not going to improve much further, and not as marketable). Ronaldo might actually turn out to be cheap at 80m (just like DB7 was cheap at 25m).
Kaka at 56m is the expensive one though!

@Anthony Los: No it doesnt. As you will have seen I wrote ‘probably won’t happen’ and also when did any transfer story ever have an element of truth to it? United don’t announce who they are going to sign and I will not believe anything until I see a player at the club with his arm around fergie waving a scarf. However Guilleme Ballague is a good source for Spanish football and given that Barca and Madrid have both bought new, expensive strikers and Valencia’s precarious position, Villa is now a very realistic target.
Ferguson just said the other day we bid for Benzema at 35 million, there were numerous news reports saying something similar – none of which, according to your rigorous demands, would have had any element of truth in them at the time.
He also said we enquired about Ribery in March and got a negative response from Bayern. This was reported at the time by Raphael Honegstein in the Guardian (a good source for German football) but again this would have been discounted by you due to its lack of truth.
I dont really believe we are finished shopping, as Ferguson saying we are finished now and then days later going and buying this Diouf kid proved. It was just a smokescreen to take the pressure off. Villa was one of the players heavily linked to us at the beginning of the Summer and Fergie didnt mention him the other day and the only time he will ever talk about a prospective transfer is when its old news.
Clutching at straws? As I said ‘probably’…and there is also the quite major problem of him not wanting to leave Spain and whether we really need him.
But the only thing that keeps me going during the summer is conjecture around transfer news and I just felt this was worth sharing. But no, it has no truth in it….and transfer stories rarely do…all you can do is check your sources.
Is that OK?

@Dominic: Wow thanks thats really good.
But all im thinking right now is if we buy, say a centre mid or a left mid or even a striker, this is going to eliminate the players that are already in those positions. For example, if we bought villa, berba wouldn’t start, owen would barely get any time on the pitch and macheda/welbeck wouldn’t get their break out season. Say if we buy de rossi (wont happen but hypothetically if we did) where would anderson play and gibson would not have his break out season. Same goes with a left mid, what would we do with nani because giggs wld be the one used as a reserve not nani and the player who we bought wld be the starter. So i think we have a sort of complete squad (this is very debatable) even though parts of it are mediocre.
Any thoughts?

@Anthony Los: I think everyone talking about midfielders solely comes from this site. I have seen barely anything else linking us to midfielders. You have to trust Fergie on this one, he will get another season out of Giggs and Scholes (whether people like it or not) and he must believe that Hargreaves is OK or can at least play once every 10 days (which he just said about Owen). We have lots of midfielders in the squad, he obviously is hoping to use Gibson more this season, and whether people like all these players or not they better deal with it because next Summer is when, or if, we buy a centre mid.
If we buy anyone else it will be a left winger or a forward. There seems to definitely be something in the Costa rumour as it really wont go away. You barely ever see Giggs on the left wing these days and he has to be seen as a centre mid. I am not a fan of Nani his decision making is truly awful and he refuses to track back….something I could barely stomach from Ronaldo but from him is inexcusable. He will definitely play more this season but he can also play on both wings. Tosic is a work in a progress (one I feel is doomed for failure) so maybe another left winger would not be so bad.
As for strikers well Fergie has just said Owen will be used sporadically. Berbatov was not a nailed on starter last season. Rooney is pretty much nailed on this season although I fear its as a number 9 not a number 10, as Fergie has been obsessed with him playing that position for a few years. Macheda will get more games I am sure but that Villa goal has maybe unjustifiably increased his profile and it could be a few years before we know if hes the real deal. Wellbeck is ripe for a loan move and if we keep him then I bet we play him wide more than through the middle. The 99 team had 4 experienced strikers and there is no reason why Fergie will not do the same this season and buy someone else. Probably wont be Villa, definitely wont be Aguero but there could be one more?
I hope so anyway because am I really meant to get excited about Michael ‘friggin Owen? Never liked him as a person or a player….I totally understand the rationale behind the whole thing but I have never been so underwhelmed by a transfer in my life. People saying he really wants to play for United are completely deluded….he is a mercenary of the highest order and would have been more than happy at any of the top 4 or 6/7 clubs…cue bleating how much he loves the club and rates himself. I hate his little face, he is the worlds most boring man, and am going to now have to cheer him for the next few years….and hes wearing No.7. Does this not make anyone else feel a little sick?

@Karl: Bull about Berbatov.
There are primarily two types of strikers: the “goalscorers” and
the “creators”
When Cantona, Bergkamp, Beardsley, Del Piero among others don’t achieve spectacular goal totalsnobody question them, because pwopl know they contribute in other aspecto the game.
Heck, even players like Heskey have their use in a particuar system (ask Capello) so no, a strikers role is not solely to score goals. It should be judged on whether his PRESENCE is more likely to make the team win, at which Berbatov showed last season that he was at least not as bad as his detractors painted him to be.

@Dominic: Haha your’e reallly laying to down on Michael. I dont mind him, he is an awesome poacher and he has still got some pace left. You’re right about the centre mids issue. We need to cope with what we’ve got, i just hope we dont play giggs centrally it reminds me of that horrible 03/04 season, he played there with djemba, and miller ahhhh!! But i think nani is going to turn out a great player, he just needs his confidence to rocket sky high then he will be very dangerous for our oppositions. Yea in 99 we did have 4 strikers but they had a very good understanding with eachother and the manager, so if david villa signed for us and played alongside rooney and they got subbed for macheda and owen, villa wld be fucked off. But with sherigham and solskiar (mind spelling) they didnt mind because they knew it was a rotation system with yorke and cole and i dontt think david villa has the ability to comprehend that, he is more like the best player starts mentality.

@NicoQB: Totally agree with the sentiment. However my fear for Berbatov, which Cantona and all the others had, is his lack of scoring crucial goals. I think he is a beautiful footballer, much like Veron (who I loved and was dying for him to fit in), but it maybe that he lacks the heart and courage to grab a game by the scruff of the neck. He seems to have too much confidence in his own ability – that his languid style will pay off in the end. But he also misses far too many sitters and i remember a few times last season when he was put through one on one and the centre backs got back before he got off a shot. I have also never seen a striker who spends less time on the box!
However they are just my fears and I am just playing devils advocate. I really hope this season he steps up because he definitely has the ability – a £30 million striker should have sublime control which Berbatov has to an exquisite level – something which somebody should probably tell Carlos Tevez!

@Dominic: Many of Berbatov’s flaws last season, to which I would agre with by the way – exceptthe part about being one on one with keeper, were resulting from the system in which we played, i.e. Ronaldo made to be the no.1 goal threat.
If Berbatov gets consequent game time and does not deliver, then he’ll have no excuse this time, as far as goals are concerned. I still think he ‘ll probably average around 15 assists though.

@Anthony Los: Yeah your right that midfield was truly awful! Most people thought fergie had lost it for a few years and its quite amazing how he turned it all around to win 3 in a row. If you go back 3 years when we only bought Carrick not many people gave us a chance…yet we have not looked back since. Possibly at the expense of the quality of football but fergies greatest strength is to move with the times and he reacts very quickly to trends in the game. I am hoping he takes a leaf out of Barcas book next season and gets the team to pressure from the front….so no more prima donna’s standing around for the cameras with their hands on their hips.
I get your point about Giggs in the middle but the one who worries me more nowadays is Scholes….I honestly think hes shot and needs to call it day though hes a wonderful player and it pains me to say it.
Nani as I said I am really not sure about….but I am looking forward to be proved wrong!
As for the 4 strikers thing…your completely right and the Villa thing is just me wishing! But the only person guaranteed of a place last season was Ronaldo because he is truly exceptional (but not without his faults) and demands to be indulged. The only one who really complained about the rotation – and actually started a lot of key games – was Tevez who is a brainless idiot who somehow managed to hoodwink the fans and milked it to the extreme by running about a lot, despite his inability to control the ball.
But I do fear we will not buy another striker or wide player… and if we have problems with Owens fitness then Wellbeck and/or Macheda will really need to step up. Plus Nani and Valencia need to both be exceptional and the evidence is not truly convincing they will.
And I still hate Owen; his monotonous slightly scouse voice, the brochure, the helicopter, the playing snooker at his childhood golf club, the unwarranted huge ego and this;

Berbatov is class, with a good pre season and a second season on he will next season prove to the doubters what a real player he is, he is twice the player Tevez’s is already and everyone calls him a flop from last season even with more league goals
He will hopefully have a settled partnership next season probably with Rooney and we will see the best of him, we signed him on a four year contract not a one year one.

@Dominic: wow that has made me really fucked off at him but the thing is he was at his best (everyone is cocky at that stage) hmmmm enter RONALDO!! But i do agree with you about scholes. It also pains me to say it but tbh his main attributes are all gone now, his shooting is very bad now, his long range passes are no where near up to standard and he isn’t running a crazy amount like he used to. I also agree with you on the valencia and nani issue, they both have not been anywhere near the standard they should have been and they really need to step up for the team this coming season.
We desperately need macheda to been in tip top shape as well next season because as you said if owens fitness isn’t up to scratch and berba is plying shit then we need him.
