RVP a “done deal”?

Tag: Classic Posts,Paper Round-up @ 8:50 am

Reports on the Mirror suggest that Sir Alex Ferguson is confident Robin Van Persie will join United.

The news, a bombshell in itself, loses some credibility as the “exclusive” is also reported by the Daily Mail even though the Mail takes an uncharacteristic low-profile approach, claiming that nothing is finalised as yet.

After reading the Mirror one would be forgiven for thinking that the Arsenal striker is all but a United player:

“Manchester United believe they have won the £20million race to sign Robin van Persie.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is confident the Arsenal captain will team up with Wayne Rooney to form a formidable strike-force in a rebuilt side he hopes can win back the title.”

Van Persie scored 30 league goals last year and his (alleged) arrival would more than likely see Dimitar Berbatov pitch his tent somewhere else.

Fergie has admitted the Bulgarian might leave the club, as reported by the Mail and the Mirror, but Sky Sports claims that the United manager would be happy for Berbatov to stay at the club.

“The boy has a future, but if he wants to leave it is a different matter.

“I am easy about it if he stays. I would be happy with that. But if someone comes in and Dimitar wants to leave, we will assess it.”

Meanwhile, away from transfers stories, United got their pre-season underway with a 1-0 win against Amazulu United in South Africa, with Federico Macheda scoring the only goal of an entertaining game.

Dimitar Berbatov and Javier Hernandez both started for United, with youngsters Tyler Blackett, Ryan Tunncliffe, Davide Petrucci and Scott Wootton also playing a part in the game.

United spurned a few chances and Anders Lindegaard was forced into action more than once but was impeccable between the posts.

Shinji Kagawa entered the game in the dying moments and nearly played Dimitar Berbatov through with his first touch.

Amazulu vs Manchester United, watch the highlights.

  • I’ll believe it when it happens. But I wouldn’t believe a word the tabloids say. Only yesterday they were saying Arsenal are gonna play hardball and make him see out the remainder of his contract. He is Manchester City bound I am sure.

I also don’t believe Ferguson’s quotes about Berbatov. The guy is desperate to leave and I am sure there is no shortage of interest in a player of his caliber. We are clearly holding out for an unreasonable fee

  • A bit off topic but how on earth does Ibrahamovitch get clubs to spend so much money on him? He’s good but he’s not world class and has been ordinary in every game he’s played against us

  • i dont think we need rvp at united he only proved to be a good player last season after several years at arsenal;he should stay and pay some respect to arsenal and the fans.

  • Joseph cherian

I wont believe it unless and until i see RVP playing for united .i dont want to be fooled again like the hazard transfer saga wherein it appeared in the united
‘fake’ website that hazard signed for united! Which even fooled many of the renowned news agencies! and it appeared even in their official websites! LOL feel sorry for them!seeing is not believing these days!

And btw do the glazers have money to seal RVP as well as moura deal?

  • Il also believe this when I see it. I can just see a lot of United fans getting excited over these reports only to be dissapointed when he signs for City so Im not even going to get dragged into it. A few weeks ago I stated we would sign Baines then leave it at that and im still sticking with that prediction.

  • ash is the man

rvp would be a very good signing, but what was the point in kagawa then?

  • Just because Kagawa succeeded in one role at Dortmund, doesn’t mean he cannot succeed in other roles at United. All this: “Kagawa forces us to play with one striker”, “We have to play 4-4-1-1 or 4-5-1- or 4-2-3-1 now with Kagawa”, etc… is baloney and the result of too much FIFA + FM playtime. :)

Kagawa is just one player but there are 10 others who need to be placed on team and there are plenty of ways to combine our starting 11 to include Kagawa in a 4-4-2-esque fashion with or without RvP and Rooney.

Just relax… let the season begin and if United end up as stale as last season, THEN rant your hearts out about actual sh*t on the pitch… but until then, let pre-season be pre-season and allow our fractured team (thank EURO + OLYMPICS!!) to get together and gel…

    Geez!!!

    • @colver: @Opti: When Football Manager 2013 comes out. I will play him in the whole. At least I get to make decisions. I will also sell anderson and buy a freaking Defensive Mid and Leftback

    • @Opti: Kagawa should be played in the hole as that is his position and if we play 2 strikers up front we’ll get fucked in Europe (again).

  • For the sake of this article, I do not see United sign RvP. Why?

    1. He is 28/29
    2. He is injury prone
    3. Rooney is our star striker

Only way we sign RvP is if he is willing to take a pay-cut, but why should he if City/Milan/RM are willing to break bank to get him????

Either way… Arsenal are fooked!!!

  • Ahahahahahahahahaha. That is the first reaction I heard of this news. the laugh of disbelief. Wonder how er are going to fit them all

  • I will be happy if we can sign RVP. Up man utd.

  • smart move by chelsea. They snapped up hazards younger bro thorgan. Had a year left on hs contract. United scouts should carry on sleeping.

  • Need player like a RVP in the team. Can lead the line so it will be a nice addition to the team and Rooney cannot do alone in tough game.

  • I don’t understand whether to laugh or curse fergie when he says Berba has a future at United… Shameless…

  • I still think this is all either a media hype or just rumours spread by the club to sell more tickets. Remember in january there were similar rumours of us bidding for Frank lampard from cheski… This is just on a similar pattern.. But yeah i still believe that 1 or 2 players might come in..

  • ash is the man

arsenal have rejected an official bid from united for rvp, they want 20million, so why not just stop messing around and offer 20million. he is worth it

  • Sao Paulo just confirmed our bid for 35 mil and they want more…rediculous..for that money we can get Modric and more…

  • If it is true we have made that bid then Ferguson needs his head examined. Surely if you are financially constrained the last thing you want to do is take wild punts on youngsters who have never played top flight football or even European football before.

  • A much better idea if we want to take a punt is try and sign Nuri Sahin. He will be surplus to requirements if Real bring in Modric. And he would slot in nicely to our new look midfield.

Imagine a midfield of Carrick Sahin and Kagaya? We’d have no problem with ball retention

  • Hi to all.
    A few questions
    1. Why was Berbatov cast out of the squad and why is he being tortured by the manager?
    2. Is there any logical reason why we are bidding close to £30m for a 19 year old Brazilian attacking midfielder?
    3. Is the club being run by morons or is it being run by clueless people?
    4. Did we lose an eight point lead because of a lack of quality or simply stupidity?
    5. How much will any two of the following players cost?
    -Yohan Cabaye
    – Joao Moutinho
    – Nuri Sahin
    – Cheik Tiote
    -Seydou Keita
    6. Why is Leighton Baines allegedly valued at nearly twice the price of Jordi Alba?
    7. Does anyone know the clinical name of the hard narcotics used by Sir Alex Ferguson and Mike Phelan in fielding the team against Blackburn, the tactics against Wigan and in Europe in general?

    8. If you throw a stone from a Central London office window, how many better coaches than Phelan will it hit? One or two?

    • @Jay wire: 1. Why was Berbatov cast out of the squad and why is he being tortured by the manager?

A: Awful behaviour from the manager, the entire Berba transfer from start to finish has been a farce.

      2. Is there any logical reason why we are bidding close to £30m for a 19 year old Brazilian attacking midfielder?

None what so ever, I total waste of time and money.

      3. Is the club being run by morons or is it being run by clueless people?

      Both.

      4. Did we lose an eight point lead because of a lack of quality or simply stupidity?

Lack of quality, we punched above our weight and City nearly threw it away.

      5. How much will any two of the following players cost?
-Yohan Cabaye – A season too late
      – Joao Moutinho – A must buy £20-£25m
      – Nuri Sahin – Over rated, do not touch
      – Cheik Tiote – A real must, must buy, again £20m
-Seydou Keita – He has just signed for Dalian Aerbin, obviously for the money

      6. Why is Leighton Baines allegedly valued at nearly twice the price of Jordi Alba?

Good knows, Barca have stolen him.

      7. Does anyone know the clinical name of the hard narcotics used by Sir Alex Ferguson and Mike Phelan in fielding the team against Blackburn, the tactics against Wigan and in Europe in general?

Old news and it annoys me so much I can’t comment, er why was Pogba not used?

      8. If you throw a stone from a Central London office window, how many better coaches than Phelan will it hit? One or two

      Four or five.

    • @Jay wire:
      1. Why was Berbatov cast out of the squad and why is he being tortured by the manager?
      — b/c Fergie wants to transition to fast paced team (source: Berba’s agent)

      2. Is there any logical reason why we are bidding close to £30m for a 19 year old Brazilian attacking midfielder?
      — I like colver’s idea of low wages. Every 50K/week in savings is 2.5 million over a year. Young and unproven = low wages = long-term savings. Also, re-sale price of Ronaldo made Glazers wet…

      3. Is the club being run by morons or is it being run by clueless people?
      — Glazers are clueless about football. Fergie is clueless about business. Perfect match ;)

      4. Did we lose an eight point lead because of a lack of quality or simply stupidity?
      — both and injuries. Stupid tactics + poor form from key players caused 8 pts slide.

      5. How much will any two of the following players cost?
      -Yohan Cabaye = 20m
      – Joao Moutinho = 25m (euro effect)
      – Nuri Sahin = 10m
      – Cheik Tiote = 20m
-Seydou Keita = infinite (he is in retirement mode in China)

      6. Why is Leighton Baines allegedly valued at nearly twice the price of Jordi Alba?
      — Because Carroll cost more than Villa :D Baines is a good deal at 10-15 million.

      7. Does anyone know the clinical name of the hard narcotics used by Sir Alex Ferguson and Mike Phelan in fielding the team against Blackburn, the tactics against Wigan and in Europe in general?
      — Whatever brand of chewing gum Fergie sponsors, surely!

      8. If you throw a stone from a Central London office window, how many better coaches than Phelan will it hit? One or two?
      — Two, if you count rebounds off the first one.

  • 1. Why was Berbatov cast out of the squad and why is he being tortured by the manager?

Ferguson developed a hard on for Danny Welbeck based on a few good pre-season games. For a little while the “new look ” Manchester united seemed to work with our storming start to the season. In fact I remember Jay Wire you did a Tarantino inspired eulogy to our high-octane football. If we had kept that up all season I would have understood why Berbatov was deemed surplus to requirements. But once we reverted to our normal plodding unimaginative football Berbatov should have got a recall.

    2. Is there any logical reason why we are bidding close to £30m for a 19 year old Brazilian attacking midfielder?

Cheap wages. I am convinced the reason we won’t go for established players is because we don’t like paying high wages as it eats up money that could be spent on servicing debt. That is why we are happy to pay the earth for players like Phil Jones and this Brazilian.

    3. Is the club being run by morons or is it being run by clueless people?

It is being run by complacent and arrogant elders who are stuck in a 90s football model which is obsolete.

    4. Did we lose an eight point lead because of a lack of quality or simply stupidity?

A combination of defensive sloppiness all season Especially notable in the Everton game long and utterly flat performances when it really mattered E.G. Wigan game and Manchester City game

    5. How much will any two of the following players cost?
    -Yohan Cabaye: £20 million
    – Joao Moutinho: £30 million
    – Nuri Sahin: £15 million
    – Cheik Tiote: £20 million
    -Seydou Keita: £20 million
    6. Why is Leighton Baines allegedly valued at nearly twice the price of Jordi Alba? The English tax. You could also ask why we paid £15 million for Young with a season left on his contract or why we paid £20 million for Phil Jones after just a year or two experience.

    7. Does anyone know the clinical name of the hard narcotics used by Sir Alex Ferguson and Mike Phelan in fielding the team against Blackburn, the tactics against Wigan and in Europe in general?

    No idea.

  • If Arsenal want 20 million for RvP then PAY THE FUCK UP old man!

  • Darth Red Diablo

Another white kit. We seem to suck while we wear those. Really eager for a black kit. :(

  • I actually like it. seems much better than the picnic ‘ forged in Manchester’ tablecloth.

  • If van Persie signs for us I’ll be posting porn videos on here so that everyone else can pleasure themselves to the thought of the new Rooney-RvP partnership

Admin you have been warned

  • Rooney and RVP would be United’s best strike partnership since Cole and Yorke, probably even better. Hopefully if RVP does sign, he won’t get injured.

  • 20m RvP or 35m Moura. GO!

  • How screwed would United be if:
    1) Arsenal accept 20m bid for RvP
    2) Sao Paulo accept 35m bid for Moura
    3) Everton accept 20m bid for Baines
    ——–
That’s 75m in transfer fees… can someone say: Goodbye Nani?????

  • You guys are crazy and as disappointed as I am. That is so encouraging to know you not the only one frustrated by this circus. Do these people think we are a bunch of idiots? And does Ferguson occasionally listen to what he’s actually saying? “We are not interested in Sneijder because we have Paul Pogba, whom we are not taking to America for pre-season because he’s too good for that. ” 12 months later “He treated the club disrespectfully. He didn’t notify he wanted to leave until last minute. ” Okay, boss, you’re legendary and all but we’re not a bunch of fools. If Pogba was so important, his contract would have been sorted a long time ago. He’d have played at least 15 times to show we don’t need Sneijder, who by the way, plays a totally different and unrelated role. If I was him, sitting on the bench, as a young and inexperienced left back is playing in midfield alongside a “destroyer winger”,I’d start making other arrangements right then.

“I called his coach to find out what position he plays. “It’s amazing really but it should not be a shock. Upon signing DB9,he said something like this, “we’re not really sure what position he plays. At Spurs they sometimes played him deep, but we’ll make sure he fits in here. ” What sense is there in spending an obscene amount on a player you don’t understand. Is it possible then that history is repeating itself with Nick Powell?

Don’t get me wrong here, Shinji Kagawa is a potential superstar to rival David Silva, toe to toe. But I have very little optimism about this signing. To put this in perspective,if he had signed even for Spurs, I’m so sure the season would end with him in the League’s best XI . United is a different story. We like to overly complicate things for no logical reason.
Kagawa: my preffered position is in the hole, behind the strikers.
Ferguson: he can play anywhere, through the middle, out wide, even in midfield.
That’s nice, but why not play him where he’s best. And what’s wrong with simply buying a central midfielder to play in the mid instead of toying with ideas like, “Wayne, today you play alongside Kagawa, with Chicharito upfront and Young behind him”.

Mike Phelan: Reflecting on last season,I don’t really know what happened.

That’s hardly an earth shattering revelation,Mike. You seem not to know anything at all. As for Ferguson, I get the distinct feeling he’s simply apathetic these days. No way, you’d let some young player into the club without knowing what on earth he does . It’s now totally ridiculous

    • @Jay wire: Ronaldo was a winger, until Fergie put him as Forward. Rest is history.

Let Kagawa get exposed to a superior team by playing out of position (but NOT GK or Defender) — winger, hole, midfield. Kagawa is not totally inflexible and only 23/24 so he should be toyed with a bit until it CLICKS… and THEN leave him be.

    • @Jay wire: And to think that all of this is happening even before the season starts :) . I hope to be proven wrong but it already looks as if we are going to have a comical season in terms of tactics and player selection

  • @Opti: Crucially he maintained his winger element. if he plays Kagawa as an attacking midfielder or winger then fine but for God’s sake not a Central midfielder.

we are already fucking around with Jones and the last thing you want is more experimentation

    • @Nelson: experimentation within limits of sanity!! Kagawa should be decent across midfield and as SS. No reason to NOT try him out there…

  • tonymontanna4united

From the horses mouth, it seems we have indeed made an offer for van persie. That bid is believed to be £12m 8-O
And we actually thought arsenal would accept that joke of an offer  Christ.
Absolute grade a bull shit. I knew this so called interest in rvp, lucas, and in years gone by, villa, sneijder, nasri, ozil, hazard etc was just bollocks we commented on openly to try and appease the fans.
Todays joke of an offer just confirmed that.
Im not exactly going to be upset if this van persie move doesnt come to fruition, but for fucks sake. If your gonna bull shit us fergie atleast make it convincing. £12m for rvp is a bloody joke.
We couldnt even get to the “hes greedy, asking for too much money so let him go to city” excuse, as were never going to get to being in a position to talking with him, the pathetic offers were making.

  • 20m is steep price for 1yr left in his contract though. I think Juve is only team interested in him. Money will be a minor issue for this case, Wenger will sell him to us? erm probably not, I don’t think Wenger do favor to Fergie.

We need a leading striker so I hope Wenger sell RVP to us.

  • Joseph cherian

Why not spend the money that is to to be spend on RVP to buy lewadownski firm BVB?he is a bundesliga goal machine, tall can be our target man and age is on his side.looks like a good bargain! :-D
He also has a good resale value which i am sure fits the glazernomics.
So who is a better bargain?

  • @Yang: Like Moscow, I feel that all this is just a ploy to appease united fans. Make us all giddy about a signing that will not happen and when the transfer market closes, you can be sure of ‘at least we tried’ reasons. Van Persie and Moura deals won’t happen. we are just bidding for the sake of bidding.

Call me cynical but look at it. Most Valuable club in the world, an IPO coming up and then we start to bid for High profile, most sort after targets such as hazard RvP and Moura while having a crippling debt and curtails our spending power? you wonder if all this is geared towards making the United looking more attractive in the IPO. you can’t begrudge the glazers. they are business people looking for the best deal but it’s at the expense of taking us for a fool

  • or it could also be a ploy to make Wellbeck to sign up. contact issues have been drawn out for too long.

  • Fergie confirm his interest and Arsenal confirm they get initial bid from United, Fergie has habit of keep trying to get player, once he rate at past.

I am pretty sure Fergie think we are lack of extra edge when we face strong opposition, Rooney has been big disappointment when we faced big team so far. We need those last ounce of effort or extra quality to beat rival teams.

If Wenger allow, I think we will get him, Arsenal already recruit couple of replacements for RVP so that they will play hardball until last day of transfer window.

We need CM and LB but we also need a leading striker, I will be on the moon if we get RVP.

  • Make derogatory bid for RvP.

City swoop in with double the fee and wages.

    RvP signs for City.

    Fergie: Well, we tried.

    Same old story.

  • Latest is we’ve upped our bid for Lucas to £32 Million. Please someone explain what the hell is going on in Ferguson’s mind? I was glad the Hazard bid didn’t come off because the guy was way overpriced. I hope this bid falls through as well. I object to paying huge amounts for potential when we need quality TODAY to knock Manchester City off their perch and restore some pride in Europe. You’d have thought Anderson and Kleberson would have put him off hyped up Brazilians for life.

    • @colver: The only reason I can think of is United wants to sell Nani.

it will be interesting. Moura had problems with his coach because of being played out of position. what would be his attitude IF he joins united where Sir Alex will switch him around

  • @Opti: That doesn’t work for me. Kagawa is in his early twenties, not early teens. Central midfield is something even Gerrard can’t figure out. It’s a different animal. You’re talking tempo, linking defence and attack , shifting play diagonally, defensive positioning. People argue that positions have the same. weight ,but I totally disagree. It takes a different type of understanding to play in the middle. Kagawa has never played central midfield. He was voted Player of the Season in attacking roles, first half of the season, coming from LAM,second half replacing the injured Gotze in the hole. What logic is there, in experimenting and playing him alongside Carrick? Trust me, players hate being played out of position, but out of role is even worse.

Ronaldo was converted to hybrid false nine/inverted winger, from a winger. Hardly a cataclysmic transformation. Henry was transformed to that way before Ronaldo could tie his shoes. Both are primarily attacking roles and whereas he used to play along the flank, to create and attempt goals, now he comes from wide, cuts in,mostly to attempt goals. So for me the comparison is a bit hazy. At Man City, they play David Silva as an “intereore” or free role attacking mid. Basically in the hole, because they found him a success at Valencia playing there. They found Yaya Toure playing CM and that’s where they play him. Nasri, inverted winger/LAM at Arsenal, same role at City. Simple. We found Berbatov, successful in Germany and at Spurs and even for Bulgaria, playing CF,we play him in “No man’s land”. We found Anderson an attacking mid, we play him CMF,DM. Jones is now basically, a footballer without portfolio. Why not this line of thinking. “we need to play with two CM s,so let’s buy two CM. We need an attacking midfielder,so let’s buy one and play him there.” Why convert a spoon to a spade? just get an actual spade. Some will say we don’t have money. Totally baseless. We seem to have surplus cash to buy a million defenders and wingers and strikers and stil want more, but not even one proper central midfielder. In fact, we let a very promising young midfielder go to show we don’t even value the position.
