Schweinsteiger dashes United hopes

fcb_scf_poise_schweinsteiger_628Manchester United are unlikely to sign Bastian Schweinsteiger this summer, after the German midfielder has told a German broadcaster he wants to win a fourth consecutive Bundesliga title.

The World Cup winner, who has only one year left on his deal, had said last month that he was in no hurry to sign a new contract at the Allianz Arena, prompting speculations that he could join former manager Louis Van Gaal at Old Trafford.

However, those hopes appears to have been dashed after the Bayern Munich man told German broadcasters Sport1 that he wanted to make history with his club, by helping Bayern to clinch a fourth consecutive league crown.

“We’ve won the Bundesliga for three consecutive times, no team ever has managed to win it four times,” he said.

“That’s a motivation.”

Earlier this month, German legend Lothar Matthaus had urged the 30-year-old to consider a move to United this summer.

“Schweinsteiger needs a coach that will play him according to his strengths and Van Gaal will surely do that,” Matthaus told popular German newspaper Bild.

“If there is an offer from Manchester, Bastian should give it serious consideration.”

However, with United now closing in on a deal for Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin, the chances of the Germany international moving to England this summer seem to have been drastically reduced.

United are, however, expected to try and add another midfielder to their ranks before the start of the season.
