Should Dong Go on Loan?

Dong Fangzhou – A player who sacrificed two and a half years before he could get a work permit and play in England. Everyone knows that his signing is a stunt by United to capture the Chinese market. Many fans don’t want him to play for United. We understand that. Part of that is because no one have ever seen how he played for Royal Antwerp. The following video illustrates that he is decently athletic and has a decent shot. He should be loaned to some Premiership club or Championship club to see how he can really fare. Loaning out in England has helped with Foster, Evans, Bardsley and Simpson. He might be moulded into a decent striker who when returns to United can sit on the bench whenever required, play in the cups and otherwise help the reserves, only with more confidence.

  • I’m not so sure about the loan system – you quote Bardsley, Simpson, Foster & Evans as SUCCESSES, I disagree.

Foster was a success because he’s a GK and we sent him to a side with a rubbish defence so we could see what he really was about.

And if by (probably) now selling Bardsley because we loaned him out and found out he wasn;t good enough then I suppose it was a success. I think these players will become better by TRAINING with players like Ronaldo, Rooney, etc than PLAYING with sub-standard players (by United’s standards) at Villa, Watford, Newcastle, etc. What use was Rossi at Newcastle when they just hoofed it up to him, whereas he was a success in Parma.

I also think it’s cynical to think that Dong is JUST a marketing exercise (I appreciate he does have some marketing value), if that was the case, surely in January we would have bought Freddy Adu to “capture” the US market – by the way he’s rubbish now by all accounts.

  • Mr Dong will be playing in the Asian Cup shortly. Lets see how he goes for China against teams like Japan,North Korea and Australia. I really hope that he makes it at Old Trafford. He certainly deserves a go

  • Well we can loan dong as he’s not going to be any use unless playing in carling cups matches

  • The video uploaded showed what a quality Dong is. He is certainly not a gimmick to get into the Chinese market. I believe that with him going on loan – IE: to Parma or some other clubs, which he will be played often, will benefit him greatly. I don’t think he is a decent striker. If he should be a decent one, what is a better one?

  • not the best video quality, tough to see everything. I like the lad. Always have. As a prospect, he has pace, power and a good calmness in front of goal. Dong looks good in the video too, but then again doesn’t every player with a video on you tube look good? We would struggle to get our money back right now, so a loan with the idea of selling him on would make sense if SAF deems the boy not up to standard.
I don’t think Bardsley has been a failure at

  • Whoever says that any player is signed by SAF as a marketing exercise isn’t a real Man Utd fan. Or either that, extremely ignorant.

When SAF was asked whether Park Ji-Sung was bought for reasons of marketing expansion in Asia, he essentially exploded with something like “U know me better than that… I’m not answering that (!@#$crap%^)”…

Dun be stupid, SAF never buys & never will for those reasons.

Asian players simply represent an untapped talent market. At least they dun hv a African Cup every 2 years in the midst of a European campaign.

Dong is one player with the physique, size and pace for a European league. Of course there are way more variables required for success. His 2.5 years wasted in Belgium was the result of the EU’s protectionistic economic & labour policies. He’s had it tougher than other young players.

I don’t think he should loan just yet. He should stick a round, train with the first team and get matches in the reserves till January. Which would give him enough time to get used to how things are run at OT. Then after January he can go on loan. Because only after he has seen how things are run at OT and how he can cope with that, will sending him on loan be beneficial. The lad is a talented fella no doubt. People who are judging him just on his one appearance vs Chelsea are pretty clueless really.

  • I think Dong when given a chance to play first team football for Man Utd would excel in all de striker aspects……. wy do u think rooney is good……cuz he got 2 play alot of first team football same goes for ronaldo…..im my opinion going for a striker this term would be very absurd since we hv an abundant of them right here at Man Utd……Dong, Rossi, Frazier Campbell, Fabian Brandy an ur first team strikers…..i did feel sad for Dong when he dint get de service he needed when he played against Chelski……I would think him and Rossi wud b an awesome pairin tho……jus an opinion tho…..

I think Dong is a very good and decent attacker, just that many United fans have’nt saw him playing regularly, and by looking at the video,it is shown that he is a real prospect

  • To be honest, Dong is quite good…just that he wasn’t given enough time to show how good (or how bad….based on some pundits) he is. As some of you said, it’s better to keep him in OT until January. Let him learn from the team…he’ll definitely benefit from there.

I can’t really say he’s a hot prospect like Rossi…coz he has not prove himself to be as good as Rossi (who did so well in Serie A).

Just give him few months….few more games, maybe in carling cup. And SAF will be able to decide whether to loan him out or not.

  • i guess anderson was bough to capture the brasilian market,
i guess C.ronaldo and nani was bought to capture the portugese marker
i guess evra was bought to capture the french market

you see where im going with this, SAF buys players who he feels will do well at united and bring trophiesnot to make money from promotions

  • “Everyone knows that his signing is a stunt by United to capture the Chinese market.”

You think Man U would need to do that to “capture the Chinese market”?
Do you know how many Man U followers are there in China before the signing of Dong? You’re too belittling of our club. We do not need to resort to such means to capture any market… Our history and prominence alone is enough.

  • Again, even I will say, it’s NOT a marketing stunt. China, of all the countries, has a mad-mad football/Man united following.

If that was the issue, they wouldn’t send him on loan for two years. Yes, they might have had thoughts about the Chinese market, but surely for a club with an established base like United that will be the least of their worries.

  • I agree that the capture of Dong was NOT JUST A MARKETING STUNT. But him being Chinese definitely had some impact on his signing. Please correct me if I am wrong but he was bought for around 3.5 million. Will someone buy a player with such money just to play in reserves?
I really hope that I am wrong and we see more of Dong next season, and he wont be just a mere reserve player

  • I think going to Sunderland for 6-12 months will be great for Dong.
Then again, perhaps he can be the aerial threat everybody so craves?
I think given a good couple of games, he will definitely come good.

  • The signing of Dong Fangzhou was almost certainly in some part a marketing stunt. This does not detract from the fact that he’s a quality young player with a lot of potential, it’s just a fortunate by-product.
He settled into his first European side, Royal Antwerp well and finished the team and leagues top scorer ( he has scored 34 goals in 70 Apps for Antwerp). The fact he came from China to Europe and settled so quickly and so well is a great sign.
He was also nominated in the 1st ever FIFPRO young player of the year awards along with Rooney and C.Ronaldo. Which again means he’s quality.
He should stay until January and if he’s not getting a look in go on loan to a suitable side (preferably premiership).

  • Looks decent enough but didn’t really impress in pre-season last year against good enough opposition so I still have my doubts.

Should be loaned out until January so then he can be come back if he impresses

  • To ask or state whether Dong is good or not is irrelevant. HE’s MU player. Any MU player is good. The real question is is he good enough to be 1st or 2nd string striker? Now MU has Rooney, Saha, Ole, Smith in the squad. Dong has to impress more in order for him to be the 1st team player.

  • sharathciddu,

Get over the marketing and the stunts. Let me explain the science of SAF’s transfer policy, & that for any good manager … in order of importance:

    1) Quality
    2) Availability (or if not very apparent…)
    3) Price (required to make available)

  • he’s pretty good. he’s good with both feets, looks strong in the air and he’s quick.. we shall see him in the Asian Cup- my opinion, i think he would do really well in the premiership as long as there are guidance along the way for him..

  • I just watched Dong play against AS Roma and he looked rather lost on the field to me. He did, however, seem calm in front of the goal with his 1,2 pass that almost put one of his teammates in. I just feel like he needs more instruction and confidence. I do feel he is oh so close to becoming a player who can make a good impact, but just needs a little more refinement.
