I just watched Dong play against AS Roma and he looked rather lost on the field to me. He did, however, seem calm in front of the goal with his 1,2 pass that almost put one of his teammates in. I just feel like he needs more instruction and confidence. I do feel he is oh so close to becoming a player who can make a good impact, but just needs a little more refinement.

he's pretty good. he's good with both feets, looks strong in the air and he's quick.. we shall see him in the Asian Cup- my opinion, i think he would do really well in the premiership as long as there are guidance along the way for him..

sharathciddu,

Get over the marketing and the stunts. Let me explain the science of SAF's transfer policy, & that for any good manager ... in order of importance:

1) Quality
2) Availability (or if not very apparent...)
3) Price (required to make available)

To ask or state whether Dong is good or not is irrelevant. HE's MU player. Any MU player is good. The real question is is he good enough to be 1st or 2nd string striker? Now MU has Rooney, Saha, Ole, Smith in the squad. Dong has to impress more in order for him to be the 1st team player.

Looks decent enough but didn't really impress in pre-season last year against good enough opposition so I still have my doubts.

Should be loaned out until January so then he can be come back if he impresses

The signing of Dong Fangzhou was almost certainly in some part a marketing stunt. This does not detract from the fact that he's a quality young player with a lot of potential, it's just a fortunate by-product.
He settled into his first European side, Royal Antwerp well and finished the team and leagues top scorer ( he has scored 34 goals in 70 Apps for Antwerp). The fact he came from China to Europe and settled so quickly and so well is a great sign.
He was also nominated in the 1st ever FIFPRO young player of the year awards along with Rooney and C.Ronaldo. Which again means he's quality.
He should stay until January and if he's not getting a look in go on loan to a suitable side (preferably premiership).

I think going to Sunderland for 6-12 months will be great for Dong.
Then again, perhaps he can be the aerial threat everybody so craves?
I think given a good couple of games, he will definitely come good.

I agree that the capture of Dong was NOT JUST A MARKETING STUNT. But him being Chinese definitely had some impact on his signing. Please correct me if I am wrong but he was bought for around 3.5 million. Will someone buy a player with such money just to play in reserves?
I really hope that I am wrong and we see more of Dong next season, and he wont be just a mere reserve player
