Some Site News

Tag: Site News @ 9:00 am

Readers,

just a mention that the site isn’t dead. Apologies for not posting. Regular service will resume, and the international break hasn’t helped either. In the mean time, you can continue discussing whatever catches your fancy in the comments or head over to the other excellent United blogs in the sidebar. I’ll be back soon. I promise.

Cheers,
- RR

  • @Gabriel: FIFA is great and there are improvements galore. It’s still far from perfect though. One thing that I am impressed with besides the AI and how teams play and conform to your style of play is the fact that on any settings you can adjust the speed of the game. In other words, you may like to play on hard settings like me but what I usually had great issue with was the speed was to high for the game to look realistic. Difficulty level should not be established based on game speed. That’s juvenile and completely one dimensional thinking in game development. This year they have corrected it. The AI players are just smarter and harder to breakdown individually or as a unit in the tougher modes. But the game speed can be set at slow and the game still looks and feels like a real match and not a match where everybody is running the 100 yard dash for 90 minutes. Setting team’s offensive and defensive tendencies is also a godsend. Now Wigan and Bolton will play the style they usually play. Ten men behind the ball and long direct passes with a counter attack. This is a great breath of fresh air as it’s nice to play a game where you go up against a minnow and you actually struggle to break them down even though they really don’y pose much of a threat against you at your end.

As for PES, I am curious about this year’s version. From what I have seen on IGN and on other sites and YouTube, they appear to have made a lot of improvements and have fully rebuilt their editing engine. If it allows me to create as many teams and players as I like and it offers many selections of kits and facial designs, then I might go for it. The game is of course very important but if I can’t edit and create, I want nothing to do with it. Editing better be as good as it was 4 years ago. If you get it, let me know how those improvements are. The full champions league is interesting as FIFA dropped the ball big time by not adding Zenit to their teams.

  • @johnsom33: Work sucks badly when there is a good game to play at home or a really sexy woman waiting to entertain you.

FIFA has made some great changes but they still don’t offer enough freedom in editing. I don’t want restrictions in editing and that means names, height, weight, look and all skills etc. Being spoon fed changes that are limited almost makes me feel like a kid being denied too much candy. I’m a frakken adult (although some may disagree) and I want to be able to do with a game that I played whatever I want. If that means cranking up Ronaldo to a 99. I want to create a fictitious player and I want him to be a star immediately, well the bastards won’t let me. Why? I am elated they finally listened to enough of us and got rid of the stupid fact that you had to perform stupid tests to win kits and boots. At least I can have United wear their 68 kit without having to accumulate points before I could afford it. Like I said, I bought the bloody game, it should be there for me right from the beginning. So, if they add a great editing tool and allow me to create teams, players and leagues while offering hundreds of player models, kit variations and ability to customize my imaginary leagues, then the game will have reached Utopian levels. Somehow, I think EA is years away from really getting it.

  • @Grognard: Ahh, Grog. How are you doing? Havent heard from you in a while. Been busy playin FIFA? Well, me too. You playin live? Cause if you do I may face you one day. What is your team and line up?

  • @Grognard: There is one thing that I wonder about. If I edit Ronaldo to 94, Rafael to 74, Rooney to 91, Rio to 90 and Anderson to 86, can I play with them at that level on live? I always edit players and make Ronaldos free-kciks to 99 and boost everyones speed to at least 80. When I play live I see other people playing Torres and Gerrard at a level of 92, I mean is that really possible? If so can you tell me how to do it?

  • @Rd: I’m afraid not mate, Fergie said it’ll never really leave him but they can try and manage it, which is what they are trying to do at the mo. If the problem persists, i’m afraid hargo won’t be anything more than a squad player as he won’t be reliable with regards to availability. Now, that would be sad

  • any of u guys play pes 2009 yet?…just got it for the pc…become a legend mode is a lot more in-depth than be a pro..u start from the age of 17 to 35..and u have try outs and such.there is alot of room for future improvement in that area..sure no change in graphical detail but gameplay in pes is a lot superior from last year..and the CL liscence is cool to boot…i thought fifa09 was cluttered with lot of good ideas but no depth in some like be a pro and manager…so im leaning pes this time…

  • @RedDevilEddy: How do you edit players so that you get large numbers. I got Rafael to 71 but i had to purge him of his penalty taking and free kick ratings, not to mention of course the goalkeeping ones. I always do the goalkeeping for everyone and I will reduce free kick and penalty taking for players but only up to a point. I hate the idea of playing a cup game and ending in a tie and one of my penalty takers ends up being a 1. So how did you get Rfael to 74, Rooney to 91 and Rio to 90. I noticed you never mentioned Ronaldo because you and I know that you won’t mess with his free kick and penalty numbers. Hell, I increased them and he still missed a penalty against Liverpool in a game that ended 0-0. I can’t remember the last time I played a 0-0 game on FIFA. Plenty of chances to win the game as I outplayed the Scousers but no luck. Tevez missed a sitter in the 90th minute or it would have been deja vu allover again. I then played United against Aalborg in Denmark and watched United dismantle them 5-0. And Berba didn’t score. Ronaldo scored two beauties and my shutout was ended as I started Jonny Evans and he fouled a guy in the box and gave up the penalty.

One needs to practice with this game before starting a league because the opponents defensive setups need to be understood and I need to get used to seeing things and reacting. Hull for example constantly pressure defend and their defenders play very high. Their is no room in the midfield nor is their any width. I then decided to sag back and let them come to me and I played the long ball and beat them on two counters 2-0. A very interesting game and much more to think about than in past games. For a guy who doesn’t play live (Just not into that kind of thing. Must be my age) it’s refreshing that EA has improved the opponents AI and now I can get a stiff challenge on professional setting. Semi Pro is still a walk in the park though. What I would like to see is that kicked up a notch where it is easy to score 3 or 4 goals a game but not 10+. In Professional setting it can be tough to score period against good opponents.

  • @Rd: I think it’s a chronic condition and therefore the chances of him contributing a lot are not good. In fact, I think they are slim to none unless he takes the dive and goes for surgery. And that’s only 50/50 in terms of curing his problem.

  • @johnsom33: I couldn’t agree more. It started to smell of scouse around here.

  • @johnsom33: I think you’ll find that was Stephen, and it wasn’t entirely all his fault  . Anyway talk away about FIFA 9 etc etc etc, I don’t have to be interested you know, I do have the OFF button on my computer    . Just as you do if you have no interest in listening to the ENGLAND supporters on the blog talking about England and Gerrard, cos that was the essence of the debate Bro. .

Grog, a bit of scouse smelling never did anyone any harm, especially when the smell Stephen and I was talking about was SHIT for England named Gerrard. Gabriel on the otherhand was trying to clean up Gerrard’s shit   .
