Readers,

just a mention that the site isn’t dead. Apologies for not posting. Regular service will resume, and the international break hasn’t helped either. In the mean time, you can continue discussing whatever catches your fancy in the comments or head over to the other excellent United blogs in the sidebar. I’ll be back soon. I promise.

Cheers,

  • @Gabriel: With so many people commenting on Fergie’s failings lately, do you think he should be the one preparing our team for future glory, or like Berbatov should have come in earlier, do you think Fergie should be bringing his successor in and preparing – just a thought everyone. Please don’t be chucking LIVE verbal grenades at me  .

  • @jos : Why do you think that those 4 cannot play in a team and help our team win? How can you say Rooney’s form is directly related Heskey’s muscles? The way England play the game is completely different from how United do it. The England is def not gifted with an attacking talent as United. You must be happy that Fergie signed Berbatov who can offer something different yet be creative and effective in the United attack rather than a “bulldozer” Heskey.

Rooney always scores goals when he is given a run of games. Last season he was scoring for fun in October before he got injured by some stupid training instrument..When Adriano,Ronaldo,Ronaldinho,Robinho can play in a team sure Berba,Rooney,Tevez and Ronaldo can play together….We should be happy that we dont have to worry about Rooney not scoring goals because of the array of attacking talent we have….Rooney and Tevez gives the team much more than goals

  • @Shyam: But you are sacrificing them into a system just to play them. To play all four either Tevez or rooney would have to play out wide, it would supress Ronaldo, what about squad rotation, that is the way forward, surely!

Like? Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • @Stephen : Ohh yes Stephen..I totally agree..Rotation is the way forward…i was just pointing out that if situation demands 4 of them can def play together and be a threatening attacking force (see Blackburn match) they would fit in a 1-3 attacking formation..which can be so menacing…obviously when players of that much intelligence and creativity play together they are definitely a threat …..but realistically rotation is the way to go and i would say we should see Berba lesser than Tevez this season because Tevez is the settled striker…

  • @Shyam: But if Berba doeesn’t play mate he won’t settle, look at Nani not playing enough games so looks unsettled, plus he will play more we spend big on the Bulgarian and he seems a Fergie favorite.

  • @Stephen I think it has to be that fine balance..i am sure Fergie would do that if United are to sign Tevez for that freaking amount…

  • @jos: Rooney doesn’t need a ‘BIG’ centre forward to play off, just someone who can stay up there, push back the opposing defensive line and bring others into play, in a word, a foil. You don’t have to be ‘BIG’ to do that. Nistelrooy did it, remember? and Rooney was a better player for it. There are plenty ‘small’ strikers that can do it; Villa, Aguero etc. It’s just that these kind of players create space just in front of the opposing defense (where Rooney thrives) because they push the defenders back towards their area with their speed, bullishness, clever touches or just positional play.

The smaller ones usually have some pace or at least positional play or exquisite touches. Tevez should try and be one of those again if he is complaining about losing his scoring edge. He was like that in Corinthians mainly because the pace and physicality was less over there, but in the prem, the small guys need pace to lead the line and he doesn’t have much so he dropped deep, and unfortunately has been dropping deeper ever since.

This is why Fergie bought berba, he was tall enuff to win headers and punted up balls from vidic  , push defenders back into their area, plus has exquiste touches that could bring others into play. These are what Tevez couldn’t do effectively with Rooney playing off him. Better yet with Berba, he can score some peaches too and assist a whole lot so he was in most ways, an ideal buy.

The best part actually, is that all three players can occupy either role satisfactorily and it’s that interchangeability that I hope will cause defenders a lot of headache in the coming months.

  • @Craig Mc: Mr Doom and Gloom  so quick to spread hysteria… nobody’s been commenting on Fergie’s failing’s (excuse my previous post), I just think we were a bit lax and the injuries hit us harder than we anticipated.

On Fergie bringing in his successor, I don’t know mate… maybe Fergie’s successor is already in a top job at the mo, at least he should be if he hopes to be in charge of United  Besides, it’s still a long way for Fergie before he retires and the good managers don’t need too long to settle into a good team. So, I think not!

I think Grog holds the proud title of Mr gloom and doom, and nobody can steal his crown, because he is the bloody master. However he is so much more restful these days, so maybe he is ready to forfeit his crown. I would say not bloody likely though. I think Grog is well able to gloom and doom where necessary without pumping up his blood pressure or rapidly increasing his pulse. Go Grog, nobody does it better  .

  • @Gabriel: Its a tough one to call, pos give Berba a rest and play Rooney and Carlos, we are still thin in the centre of midfield so Andy and Fletch will play, please not O’Shea!, Nani and Slave.
The back four will be interesting maybe give Raf, and Evans a run out, hopefully they won’t have much to do!

  • @Stephen: On one hand, it is a homegame and the fans deserve the best line-up, but on the other, they are mostly a bit fatigued and we have a crucial game against the hoops on tuesday… so I see him striking a balance btw given some players much needed rest and gettin some 100% match fit. This is how I would pick my team:

    ————-VDS———–
    Neville – Rio – Vida – Evra
    ——Carrick————–
    ————-Anderson——
    Fletch—————–Nani
    ————-Rooney——–
    ——–Tevez————–

Subs: Foster, Brown, Hargreaves, Park, Berbatov, Ronaldo, Giggs

-Neville, simply because he will lead us out in the ‘battle of Britain’ on Tuesday and we need him 100% match-fit.
-Rio and Vida was a tough one, but I think Brown can fill in just to rest Rio. Evans I think is injured so might not even make bench.
-Evra everyday of the week, plus he didn’t play the last France game, so is fresh.

-Carrick needs his game time and will come off for Hargo later on, who also needs game time.
-Anderson didn’t play much for Brasil so should be reasonably fit. Although the jetlag might prevent him from proper training today and he might not feature, then maybe fletch and park could replace him on the right side of midfiled.

-Fletch is on form, can do ok on the right and should come off for Ronaldo later as Ronaldo has been playing non-stop ever since he got back from injury. Park was close tho, maybe a battle btw him and fletch.
-Nani needs games and he was a sub for Portugal’s last game so should play the full 90.

-Rooney although has been playing non-stop, is on goal-scoring form and should partner tevez up front. Berbatov has been playing a lot too and should come on for Rooney.
-Tevez should play as a No.9. He’s complaining about his goal return, well, here’s his chance, stay up front, lead the line and he will score. Plus that gives Rooney the continuity he needs in his favored and most productive position.

This is how I think we should field the side, we rest some key players but at the same time, keep them fresh while given the rusty ones valuable game time. What do y’all think?

  • @Shyam: I have to agree with the school of thought that says Berba,Roovez and Ronaldo can’t play at the same time. The tactical and technical imbalance would be too much. It would annihilate the midfield wealth we possess and it would place Rooney or Tevez in a wing role and that has never worked for me.

@jos: Fergie didn’t buy berbatov primarily for Rooney’s benefit,he bought him because he can be a focal point of our attacks and can bring everyone into the game with his back to goal. Also in front of goal he can be lethal.Rooney will benefit consequentially, and so will Tevez and Ronaldo. He is not the big centre forward that most assume (eg Vidic in the Liverpool game).

  • @Stephen: FECK!!!  I thought both him and hargo were scheduled to return this weekend? That blows big time… well, here’s my reshuffle:

    ————-VDS———–
    Neville – Rio – Vida – Evra
    ———–O’shea———-
    Park——-Giggs——-Nani
    ————-Rooney——–
    ———-Tevez————

Subs: Foster, Brown, Evans, Fletch, Anderson, Ronaldo, Berbatov

    Ronaldo for Park
    Anderson for Giggs
    Berbatov for Rooney

-Anderson and Tevez just arrived today so haven’t practiced, but I reckon Fergie will play Tevez, especially after all the media bull**** this week.
-Giggs can’t play a full 90 so either ando or fletch will replace but i’ll prefer Ando, as it will be like for like and still give us an attacking impetus.
-O’shea simply because we have Celtic soon and we need Ando and Fletch fresh for that game.

  • @Stephen: I think it’s a shame that England cannot seem to find a quality striker to play up with Rooney that will allow Wayne to be himself other than Heskey. I mean England get to proud around and say Hey World look at us, we have Emile Heskey as our #1 striker. Ridiculous! Heskey is a joke but that just says millions about English football right now. That Capello cannot find and old school striker to compliment the style of Rooney. Everybody who fits that bill is a foreigner like Berbatov, Ashton, Pavlyuchenko, Drogba and a few others. Berbatov is fantastic don’t get me wrong but if you think Rooney looks fantastic along side Heskey, I would love to have seen him play alongside an old school striker like Huntelaar. Still, Capello has to continue searching for that striker to compliment Rooney without sacrificing a spot for Emile Fucking Heskey. What a laugh!

  • @Gabriel: Gabriel; what are you smoking mate? Villa and Aguerro are the last thing Wayne Rooney needs. They are exactly the opposite of what you mentioned. They rove around and they are incapable of holding the ball up and waiting for help. Hesley does that right now better than any other forward in England. And fortunately United have Berba who is a God at this while able to score goals to boot. Samll, fast forwards who like to run around lookinfg for space is the same thing we have with Tevez. Aguero and Villa are just a little bit more potent goal scoring wise than Tevez otherwise, they are the same bloody thing. Other than Berbatov and Heskey, Drogba, Huntelaar, Pavlyuchenko, Pogrebnyak, Toni, Klose, Gomez, are the kind of forwards that play up front and stick to that area while also holding up the ball and distributing when needed. Not roadrunners like Aguerro, Torres, Villa, Owen etc. Total difference in styles there mate.

  • @Grognard: actually my comment cut off in that post(stupid editing thing only works for 90secs  ), I meant to write: There are ‘small’ players that can do it; Huntelaar, Nistelrooy, Torres, Anelka, Forlan, Morientes, in other words, players that don’t rely on only physicality/size to lead the line, but pace, touch and excellent positioning. Certain type of strikers enjoy having that foil to play off, players like Rooney, Villa, Aguero etc

  • @Craig Mc: You’ve got that right mate. I am the definition of doom and gloom and I always will be the Prince of Fucking Darkness. And I’d get more vocal about some of the stuff going on on the blog the past couple of days but to be honest, The Grogster has been testing his heart and blood pressure by playing FIFA 09 non stop. Man I love this game even thought they still left out a bunch of improvements I’d like to see. Still, very bloody addictive if you are a kid at heart and if you have too much bloody time on your hands. But fear not. The gloom and doom will return when United does.

This International break seems to have gone on forever. My beloved Germany did the business and won two big games but nobody gets a free ride from my condemnation against the system and how it operates. I stick to my belief that International football should be played after the end of domestic season’s and cup competitions just like the World Cup and Euros. In those odd years when there is no tournament they could easily play the games if they made adjustments like compressing the season more due to the fact that Internationals are played at the end. That would mean 4 fewer midseason breaks and that would mean up to 4 weeks earlier that a season could end. Then let the national teams have their all star players for 30 to 45 days and the players could still have close to two months off while the rest of the players would have a nice three month + vacation from it all.

So I’m glad we get back to proper business tomorrow and that we are not crying like Liverpool over the loss of one of our stars to injury. Injuries are another reason to follow my plan. No team should have to tolerate it’s players getting injured due to these international breaks. Spain doesn’t pay Torres’ wages, Liverpool does. Now they have to do with out him for two weeks. For me that’s not just bad luck for them, that’s totally wrong and unjust. Had the games been played in late May, Torres would have two months to recover from his injury and his club team wouldn’t be hurt by it. The game needs some major improvements but FIFA needs to get rid of the ass clown in charge and go with a real change agent. Just call me the Obama of football. Although I am a maverick in my thinking, unlike McCain-Palin, I actually back it up and go forward with it rather than maintain the staus quo. FIFA needs a common sense maverick who will make the changes the game needs in so many areas.

Now hows that for doom and gloom? OK maybe not mean spirited enough but wait until Fergie pulls off some boneheaded lineup or tactical decision that costs United. Then the wrath of Grognard will be heard all the way to Mount Doom and beyond.

  • @Stephen: and they say this man is the ‘better’ choice for England captain?

I’ve said this before, that decision was either supposed to be a safe one to ensure smooth-sailing in the England team and heirarchy or it was a master-stroke by Capello. Terry is never going to outlast Rio in appearances for England, Rio’s quality will last far longer, hence will have a longer stint in the England team. Maybe Capello gave terry the band just to satisfy the status-quo knowing that Terry’s england career will be over shortly.

  • @Gabriel: Your deductive reasoning is excellent their Watson. You are correct. Grognard has been busy obsessing over his newly purchased version of FIFA 09. One just cannot get enough games in during a day. I need to also get work done and eat too. The game is excellent and they have made some major improvements but from a visual perspective, the players look too thin and tall (like PES) than they did before and they don’t really resemble the moves or style of the real players as well as before. I used to be able to have Hargo rule a game and partly because he was very recognizable out their in TELE mode.
Now he is hard to pick out and his running style which resembled his last year, doesn’t look the same. Tevez looks like a skinny tall guy, Rooney runs and act a lot like Ronaldo and he too looks nothing like himself unless you see closeups. How is Berba supposed to play without his hairband? I’m also noticing the toughest players to control seem to be the most skilled ones. I have a harder time getting by an opponent with Ronaldo and Ribery than I do with lesser players. Obviously I need to get used to the game a bit more. I have no problem scoring goals on the Semi-Pro setting which I always use to get used to a new game. Players are more nimble and flexible over the ball now which is a great improvement Professional setting is more of a test but not impossible. I still find keepers make boneheaded decisions on time. I played United vs West Brom on Semi-Pro and ate them alive 10-1 but EVDS gave up a goal by making a stupid decision to go out for a ball he never had any business doing so. Just like real life I guess. Anyway, when I played the same sides in Professional mode the result was 5-0 United but it was much more of a challenge. Pompey were beat 3-0 but it took me 85 minutes to get the second goal as they made it very tough to break them down. When I played Germany vs Poland I was shocked I only won 1-0 but the game’s AI was impressive as Poland placed ten men behind the ball and really congested the central midfield. I had to finally attempt to attack with width before my sub Borowski scored with a stunner from 20 meters. Frustrating but realistic. I found much easier playing Germany against a more skillful and attacking France. I beat France 3-0 but had many chances. They didn’t defend for their lives like the Poles or Pompey do in the game. This an excellent groundbreaking addition to this years game. Intelligent and realistic AI tactical styles and strategies.
Suffice it to say I’m having fun. So it’s time to go back to the game now and get my fix until I have overdosed. Although that won’t stop until a month away from the release of FIFA

  • @Gabriel: I think you could be right about Fergie starting Tevez and resting either Rooney or Berba. Resting Rooney would be the smarter of the two as Berba never really played much with Spurs and is still fighting like Ronaldo to get in shape. He needs the minutes right now.

If he’s the mould in which ‘English’ defenders are brought up, we will continue to be dominated by fast and technically gifted forwards. • @Stephen: I wasn’t talking about how well England were playing? That is evident. I was just making the point that it’s sad a country with such proud football heritage and a country that still stubbornly holds on to the 4-4-2 like a religion cannot produce better old school strikers than Emile Heskey. I for one would be willing to see how Ashton or Bent do with Rooney. And as for England doing better, come on mate, if they cannot beat their last two opponents soundly at home, then they might as well pack up and go home. The Croatia match is what got me feeling more optimistic. Also, the fact that past England teams would have dropped 3 to 5 points in the competition by now. This lot hasn’t which I attribute to the off field more than on field changes made by Capello. Banning the WAGS was a big improvement. Run the team like Klinsmann ran the German team before the World Cup and England can focus and play up to their potential. The key is focus with no distractions.

  • @Grognard: yeah, all in good time… Ashton is relatively young and if he’s smart, he’ll see that there’s a role for him in this new system and shape up. It’s also a case of experience too in a way. Heskey has done it for England before, hence is a better and more adaptable option for right now, but you don’t expect him to still be in the team by 2010 !! I reckon we’ll see a gradual influx of younger players into the England squad over the next two years.

My back doesn’t allow me to sit endlessly for hours to play pc games so I purchased an XBOX several years ago as an alternative that I could play while laying back in my bed. PC games will always offer more than a console system will. I also feel the games are better designed for a consoles hand held device as opposed to a mouse and God forbid, a keyboard. Football Manager is what I get for my computer. The other problem is that I now own an iMAC and 99% of the games out there are not made for it. Still, I am pretty please with my 360 games. Especially now that I feel I got a second generation 360 console that won’t break down.

  • @Stephen: In fairness to Klinsmann he is trying to instill a radical revolution to the way the game is coached, prepared for and applied. His changes appeared to be failing for his first eight months in charge with Germany but eventually the players, the staff and the nation accepted them and Germany hasn’t looked back. What he did have though in Germany was a master tactician in Joachim Low. I don’t recall who his aide de camp is at Bayern but right now the revolution is not working. Klinsmann is a very smart cookie and I think Bayern need to show some patience and wait for the changes to take hold. I have great faith in Klinsy. I just hope the Bayern board has the same kind of patience. Based on the past reputations, they don’t. Klinsmann would have been better served to further enhance his reputation as a maverick and agent of change by moving to a middle of the table club with great potential, rather than a proven powerhouse.

Maybe it’s just the fact that i’m a new FIFA convertee so that’s what I’m looking for at the mo. However, the gameplay seems to be revamped and waayyy better than PES08 so that’s good news, anyways, I think FIFA 09 has just about topped pro evo again this year, and I just might become a fully fledged FIFA advocate  (turns out fans of all forms of football are just as fickle  )

  • @Grognard: I applaud EA for really focusing on making the gameplay tighter. Most people or first time FIFA players wont really notice it, but for those of us who played 08 alot and the euro game can tell the difference.

Having said that I am a littled dissapointed that they didn’t do more with the manager mode, it is almost a carbon copy of last years game. I will excuse them this year because it is obvious they spent the majority of their time on making the gameplay right(which after all is the most important thing.)

I also love the BE-A-PRO mode, I cant get enough of that at the moment. Again Im a little disapointed in it onl being 4 years longs but hey what can I do?

The bad thing for me is that I have to work today and all weekend, and right now its killing me just talking about FIFA knowing that I cant play it for another 8-9 hours.

  • @count berbatov: It all depends on what you are looking for. If you want a Blueray player so that you can watch HD movies on your tv then PS3 is the way to go. If you absolutely must play Medal Gear Solid and a few of theior good games than PS3 is the way to go. But if you want a collection of great games and fantastic gaming option like XBOX Live and XBOX Marketplace then XBOX 360 is the way to go. I have compared similar games that are released for both systems at my friend’s place and I honestly feel XBOX beats PS3 hands down. That’s just my opinion. I’m sure some might disagree but when they do, it’s about games that are only available on PS3. 360 is cheaper but if you buy one now you will be getting the second generation version which has improved performance and very small percentages of failure. Previously the S6O was famous 3 in 3 systems failing within 1 year. The dreaded Orange Light of Death has happened to me 4 times, or is it 5, I can’t remember. Now the gaming experience on the 360 must be fantastic if I continue going with it during it’s time of instability. Gears of War, Halo 3 plus a load of other classic games have been exclusive to that system. PS3 has their own exclusives but XBOX just seems cooler to me. EA Sports games like FIFA always work well on XBOX too. Hope I was helpful even though I have a clear loyalty and bias towards PS3. PS3 is fine now that it has ironed out many of the problems that game developers had with it. They still don’t produce enough games nor are there games as good barring a few good ones.
