Stoke 2-2 Man Utd: Player Ratings

Manchester United conceded goals and dropped points for the first time this season as we were held 2-2 at Stoke City this evening.

We came from behind to lead 2-1 in the second half before Eric Maxim Choup-Moting’s second goal earned a point for the hosts.

Marcus Rashford had equalised at the end of the first half after Paul Pogba’s header went in off the England international.  We’d fallen behind less than three minutes before when Choupo-Moting tapped in from close range.

Lukaku scored his fourth goal of the season in as many games by rebounding his own effort after being denied one-on-one by Jack Butland.

Phil Jones failed to pick up Choupo-Moting from a corner after David de Gea had made a world class save to deny Jese.

Here are our players scored:

David de Gea 8

David de Gea was really tested today and made some top saves including a contender for save of the season.  The Spaniard didn’t have any chance with either of Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s goals.

Antonio Valencia 7

Didn’t do much wrong defensively, got in some good positions to put crosses into the box but failed to really test Jack Butland and his defence.

Phil Jones 4

Poor positioning in not covering the near post to cut out Mame Biram Diouf’s cross for Stoke’s opener.  Then he failed to pick up Choupo-Moting from a corner from which the Ghanaian headed in the Potters’ equaliser.

Eric Bailly 7

Lost Stoke’s striker for their close-range opener but was otherwise solid at the back today.

Matteo Darmian 5

Caught out of position for the opening goal and both Diouf and Jese had the beating of Matteo Darmian at left-back today.

Nemanja Matic 7

Stoke’s most successful attacks came from down the wings where Nemanja Matic wasn’t involved.  The Serbian broke a couple of things up in the middle but didn’t see the kind of possession he had in our first three games.

Ander Herrera 6

A tidy first start of the Premier League season for Ander Herrera who saw a lot of possession when on the field but didn’t create anything with it.  Replaced by Juan Mata at 2-2 in the final 20 minutes.

Paul Pogba 8

Credited with an assist for heading the ball onto Marcus Rashford into the back of the net to score a late first-half equaliser.  Paul Pogba was inventive in the middle of the midfield, bringing the ball forward, but once again ambitious with his long-range shooting.

Marcus Rashford 8

Didn’t know much about his goal and may be disappointed not to get another.  Marcus Rashford made some excellent runs beyond the defence but the only time he received the ball he tried to set up Romelu Lukaku unsuccessfully in the opening two minutes.

Romelu Lukaku 7

A well-timed run for his goal for which he produced a composed finish on the rebound.  Missed an excellent chance on his left foot in the final 10 minutes.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan 6

An excellently weight through ball to set up Lukaku for our second goal.  Otherwise Henrikh Mkhitaryan wasn’t hugely influential from out on the left.

Substitutes

Juan Mata 5 – Came on for the final 20 minutes to play a central role but didn’t make much of an impact.

Anthony Martial 5 – Third substitute appearance of the season but no goal for Anthony Martial this time.  A delightful cross set up a great opportunity for Romelu Lukaku

Jesse Lingard 5 – Came on for Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the final seven minutes but proved too late to make an impact.
