Europe in a different league for United

Derby Counted for as United advance in the FAYC

Tag: Academy @ 10:59 am

Renowned for never doing things the easy way, Manchester United’s U18′s had to produce a performance of quality and strength to overcome a Derby County side boasting England U17 internationals, in-form strikers and a notable physical advantage not to mention the early initiative with an opening goal on 20 minutes.

A Jack Barby double of Phil Taylor-esque precision saw United overcome the deficit and advance to the next round where they now face Swansea City at The Liberty Stadium.

No sign of a blue moon rising as United enjoy derby day revenge

Manchester United are through to the fourth round of the FA Cup after defeating Manchester City in a pulsating encounter at Eastlands.

Goals from Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck sent United fans into raptures as Fergie’s men reclaimed local rights, while City were left incensed by referee Chris Foy’s decision to send Kompany off.

The Academy: United 3 – 3 Bolton Wanderers

Tag: Academy @ 11:12 pm

United’s under 18s fell behind three times but each time pegged their opponents back to earn a point and a few lessons against Bolton’s under 18′s at Carrington this morning.

In steadily worsening conditions throughout the 90 minutes, United failed to get into their stride and dominate possession like they had been doing in the closing weeks of 2011. Similar goals from Rudge and Hendrie sandwiched a typically United goal for Sam Byrne, but the story of the game lies in the errors that continue to plague this seemingly immature, ignorant defence who appear unwilling to learn from their own mistakes.

The Academy Returns. MUFC v Bolton: Preview

Tag: Academy @ 10:18 pm

Tomorrow sees the return of the Premier Academy League as United take on Bolton at Carrington in an 11am kickoff.

These sides met in early November in what proved to be a enjoyable game between two teams so far struggling for consistency this season. The match ended in a 2-1 win for United with goals either side of halftime from Ekangamene and Barmby, the former blasting a wonderful low strike from 30+ yards and the latter a smart finish after an awful defensive lapse of concentration.

The score could and maybe should have been greater that day with good chances squandered throughout. The victory was marred by what turned out to be a nasty hip injury to Joe Rothwell, his return is expected sometime in February. The game was also an opportunity for the young, but quickly improving young reds, to keep a valuable clean sheet. It wasn’t to be thanks to a late break away goal that could easily have been dealt with.

The Academy: United 1-2 Liverpool

Tag: Academy @ 1:27 am

In a wind and rain affected 90 minutes at Carrington today, Liverpool stole the points in the first and last minutes to grab a second win in just six weeks over United’s improving youngsters.

The minutes in between saw United ride their luck and spurn opportunities in equal measure.

Jack Dunn was Liverpool’s match-winner with two well taken finishes at crucial times. Sam Byrne finally broke his duck when he got on the end of a superb move that will almost certainly be a candidate for goal of the month, possibly even goal of the season.

The Academy: United 2 -1 West Brom

Tag: Academy @ 3:23 pm

Mats Daehli stole the show at Carrington yesterday as Manchester United’s Academy boys saw off a somewhat spirited fight from West Bromich Albion. Mats was the difference scoring both goals in a 2-1 victory that saw United extend their current winning streak to five games and maintain the momentum that’s building up nicely to begin their FA Youth Cup defence next month.

United’s boy’s made hard work of seeing off Albion’s challenge despite, at times, being gifted territorial advantage and easily having the measure of West Brom’s resistance.

Excellent individual performances from McCullough, Blackett and Jack Rudge were ultimately rewarded thanks to the classy finishing and movement from Daehli.

The Academy: United v West Brom – Preview

The Academy have won all four of their last four outings (including two friendlies in Slovakia) and they will no doubt be hoping to continue that run of results when they host West Bromich Albion’s Academy at Carrington tomorrow morning. West Brom are one position below United in the Premier Academy League and were beaten 4-2 last time out at home by Crewe Alex’ who United recently took apart 4-1.

All-Time Best XI Series: Left Wing / Midfield

Tag: All Time Best XI Series @ 6:47 pm

When we are faced with writing a “best of” list, we always tend to mention things that are fresher in our memory, which is why having to write about United’s best 10 left midfielders ever has proved a lot trickier than I had initially thought. This is largely due to the fact that, in 24 years, I’ve only seen one (arguably two) player dominating that area of the pitch. United are a club built on attacking flair and wonderful wingers have put opponents to the sword over the years but the number 7 shirt has always had a different aura compared to number 11. Or so, I thought…

All-Time Best XI Series: Leftback

Throughout the history of Manchester United Football Club, we have been blessed with great fullbacks on both sides of the pitch. While we have enjoyed watching numerous players in the right back berth, the selection of Gary Neville was hardly a surprise. The left-fullback position, however, is a much more difficult decision. The top ten candidates have together made nearly 3,500 collective appearances for the Reds, a clear indication of the stability we have had in that role over the years.
