United’s record signing poised for debut

Manchester-Uniteds-Juan-Mata-during-the-press-conference-3066739Had it not been for the surprising arrival of a diminutive, yet incredibly talented, Spaniard, tonight’s Premier League at Old Trafford would have been all about one man and one man only, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer returns to the ground where he so often found the net during his playing days.

As Ole returns as a visitor, there are few doubts that he’ll be greeted to a raucous reception for Old Trafford does not forget his heroes – unless they wash up on Merseyside and kiss the Liverpool badge, that is – and the Norwegian, for his dedication to the club first and foremost, deserves a hero welcome.

United’s old boys not in mood for favours

Fabio-Borini-Celeb-v-Manchester-United_3062911Manchester United host Sunderland in the second leg of the Capital One Cup semifinal, trailing 2-1 to the Wearsiders and requiring a win to clinch a spot in League Cup final for the fourth time in eight years.

Ahead of tonight’s game, we have caught up with Sunderland blogger Joseph (@SunderlandWorld) who was kind enough to share his views on tonight’s game, Wes Brown and United’s malaise.

Trip to Wembley could change United’s season

Tag: Match Preview @ 7:55 am

Sunderland-v-Manchester-United-2999112Describing a game against Sunderland on a Wednesday night in January as a last chance saloon for Manchester United would have raised a few eyebrows in years go by.

David Moyes and his team might not be at that stage yet, but tonight’s second leg of the Capital One Cup semifinal is as big a test as any the former Everton manager has faced since replacing Sir Alex Ferguson in the Manchester United dugout last July.

Hazard ahead for United

Eden+Hazard+Chelsea+v+Manchester+United+Premier+KyN0Q72MJ3BlTravelling to face a direct rival knowing that they’re the ones who have got all to lose from the context can only mean two things – either the gap is so disproportionally in favour of the hosts that everybody expects them to win, or the visiting team have already run away with the league, thus they can afford to take the game lightly.

Sadly, as far as tomorrow’s clash at Stamford Bridge is concerned, the former applies to United, who travel to South West London knowing full well that the pressure will be all on Chelsea to deliver, for almost nobody expects David Moyes to get a point at a Stamford Bridge, let alone a win.

Second time lucky for United?

Zemanta Related Posts ThumbnailNormally, there wouldn’t be anything better to escape the January blues than United games coming thick and fast, even more so when three of them are at home and the only away is the first leg of a cup semifinal.

Unfortunately, this season, more games simply mean more chances to get back on the horse or, as it’s been the case in 2014 so far, more opportunities for United to inflict misery on us all, a task which, it has to be said, they’ve mastered in spectacularly brilliant fashion since the turn of the year.

United target Wembley showdown

Tag: Match Preview @ 8:37 am

Zemanta Related Posts ThumbnailHaving started 2014 in terrible fashion with consecutive home defeats against Spurs and Swansea, United travel to Sunderland tonight hoping to take another step towards the Capital One Cup final, at the moment the Reds’ most realistic chance of silverware in this disgraced season.

Sunday’s showing in the FA Cup was nothing short of embarrassing – something we’ve become somewhat accustomed to in the first six months of the campaign – and United must improve, if they’re to secure a positive result against a side that might be bottom of the table, but will undoubtedly be fired up for the occasion.

United seek cup comfort

Tag: Match Preview @ 9:00 am

Welbeck Cleverley and JonesPaul Lambert believes that top Premier League clubs could do without it, romantics baulk at the prospect of having the competition’s format further altered by the FA and are applying the finishing touches to the “magic of the cup” cliche, which is set to be given its first airing of the season over the weekend.

Whichever opinion one might agree with, it’s undeniable that there’s something special about the 3rd round of the FA Cup, even though a home draw against Swansea is neither the glamorous home tie some would have wished for, nor the rip roaring away trip the overwhelming majority of us hoped for when the draw was done.

United look to finish 2013 on a high

_71959401_459383507There is, the saying goes, no rest for the wicked. There definitely isn’t any rest for Manchester United nor for their traveling supporters who, having spent Boxing Day in the British City of Culture – that will be Hull, for those of you who missed out on that nugget of brilliance – will now embark on another long slog to Norwich.

Trips to Norfolk have been largely forgetful events in recent seasons, with United losing two of their last three at Carrow Road and, more worryingly, failing to get on the scoresheet in both of their defeats.
