Manchester United confirm Tottenham youth coach’s appointment

Kieran McKenna

Manchester United have confirmed that Kieran McKenna has been appointed as the club’s new Under-18 coach on Thursday, September 1.

He started out as a midfielder with Enniskillen Town, before he signed for Tottenham Hotspur. However, a hip injury forced him to end his playing career and he moved to take the coaching role at the north London club.

Paul McGuinness left the role at United in February and that was vacant, which will now be filled by McKenna. He signed for the 20-time English champions from rivals Tottenham.

United Under-18 side will take on Middlesbrough in the upcoming clash on Saturday. That will be McKenna’s first game in charge and he will be seen in the dug-out for the first time with his new club.

McKenna’s former club Tottenham knocked United out of the 2015 FA Youth Cup, which they lost to Chelsea in the semi-final.

A statement on United’s official website read, “Kieran McKenna has been confirmed as Manchester United’s new Under-18 coach.”

McKenna, who is a boyhood United fan is delighted to have completed his move as he has already started working with the Red Devils’ youngsters.

“It’s been excellent. I’ve been here about a week now, getting to know the staff, the players and everyone in the building. Everyone has been very welcoming and it helps that I knew quite a few of the staff already and had a good relationship with some of the people here,” McKenna told MUTV.

“I feel I’ve slotted in very quickly and the work with the boys on the grass has all gone extremely well so it’s been very smooth so far.

“I was involved with Tottenham since a 14-year-old lad coming across from Ireland to train with the youth team there,” he added. “I was full time since 16 and had seven fantastic years as a player. Obviously, the last couple were heavily disrupted by injury and I finished my playing career at 23 years old.

“I learned a lot and Tottenham have had a lot of success with Academy and I’m sure they will continue to do so now. To go to Manchester United, there is no bigger move you can make, it’s another fantastic Academy and it’s a dream come true really. I was a massive United fan, my dad brought me over to my first game in the 1994 season to see them lift the Premier League trophy.”

Manchester United allow goalkeeper to leave Old Trafford on loan

Manchester United Under-21 goalkeeper Joel Castro Pereira has completed a season long loan move to Belenenses in Portugal.

The 20-year-old man between the woods, is departing from  the club second time on the trot on loan, after playing for Rochdale in the 2015-16 season.

Pereira, who was included in Portugal’s Olympic squad as well, was on the substitue’s list in the senior team’s Europa League clash triumph over FC Midtjylland back in February. The goalkeeper was vice captain for Under-21s, when the rookie Red Devils won the title at  White Hart Lane in May earlier this year.

As 26 year old Ricardo Ribeiro left Belenenses this  window, the Lisbon based club’s hunt for new goalie saw them capturing the young United prospect. Reportedly, Belenenses has no option to buy the keeper, as they secured only temporary move.

“Manchester United goalkeeper Joel Castro Pereira has agreed a loan move to Belenenses in the Reds’ final piece of business on transfer deadline day,” a statement read on United’s official website.

“The 20-year-old, who was part of Portugal’s Olympic squad, is leaving Old Trafford for the second time on a temporary basis after representing Rochdale last term.

“Pereira was on the bench for the first team’s Europa League win over Midtjylland in February and deputised for James Weir as Under-21s captain when the young Reds clinched the title at Tottenham’s White Hart Lane in May.

“Ricardo Ribeiro left Belenenses in the summer and the Lisbon-based club’s search for a new goalkeeper led them to pull off a late swoop for the United man.”

With David De Gea being arguably the best goalkeeper of the Premier League, if not in the world, the first team chances of Pereira were minuscule. So the move makes sense.

Manchester United confirm English midfielder’s sale on deadline day

Manchester United have allowed their midfielder James Weir leave the club on the  deadline day transfer. The midfielder has joined Hull City on a three-year contract, becoming the  second player within a week to move from the Red Devils to the KCOM Stadium after the departure of Will Keane from Old Trafford.

The midfielder, who has spent last eight years at Old Trafford has secured move to KCOM Stadium. He will be playing under the former United assistant manager Mike Phelan.

Weir has signed a three-year contract, as the Tigers have continued their transfer dash with  Dieumerci Mbokani being the most hyped capture.

“James Weir has joined Hull City from Manchester United in a deadline-day departure, signing a three-year contract with the Tigers,” a statement read on United’s official website.

“Wednesday night’s transfer means Weir has followed his United Under-21s colleague Will Keane in making a permanent switch to Hull, the club where former Reds coach Mike Phelan is the caretaker manager. Everybody at Manchester United wishes James well for the future.”

Weir, who left the club on undisclosed fee, also marked his name in first team substitute sheet, though unused,  seven times under former manager Louis van Gaal. Though he continued to catch eyes in Warren Joyce’s Under-21s side, that won the title in White Hart Lane. The creative midfielder deputised the young guns and finished the term  with six goals. He has one first team appearance to his name when he came on as a substitute in United’s 3-2 win over Arsenal at Old Trafford earlier this year.

Talking to the Hull City’s official website, Weir said: “It’s an important time in my career and I think every player of my age wants to try and start playing regular first team football.”

“I couldn’t be happier to join Hull and really get my career started. The key thing for me is that I can be a regular part of the first team squad here and I hope I can help as the club continues to move forward.”

“I’m just looking forward to cracking on now and getting started here. It will be an exciting time once the international break is over and I can’t wait to meet the rest of the lads.”

“I can play in a few positions in midfield, which is a good asset of my game. I can play in the centre, off the striker or on the right or left. Hopefully I can contribute with some goals and assists as I like to be creative, but I also don’t mind putting my foot in when needed.”

Manchester United confirm striker sale

Will Keane

Manchester United striker Will Keane has left the club to join Hull City on a permanent transfer, for an undisclosed fee.

The striker is believed to make the switch to KCOM Stadium in a bid to regular first team actions. The 23-year-old will join the side, who suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of Jose Mourinho’s side, courtesy to Marcus Rashford’s late goal in the stoppage time.

The striker will play under the former United assistant manager Mike Phelan at Hull. He has signed a three year deal with the Tigers.

“Will Keane is joining Hull City on a permanent basis after the striker agreed a switch to the KCOM Stadium,” a statement on United’s official website read.

“Will, whose twin brother Mike is impressing with Burnley, links up with former Reds assistant manager Mike Phelan and will be out to prove his worth in the Premier League after signing a three-year contract with the Tigers. Everybody at United would like to wish him the very best of luck for the future,” it added.

Keane was the leading the line in 2011 FA Youth Cup winning side that boasted of Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Ravel Morrison. Despite being the attack spearhead back them, the player did not develop as expected, with his array of injuries to be largely blamed as he suffered major knee and groin injury setbacks, forcing him onto the sidelines.

Former manager Louis van Gaal   recalled the number nine from Preston North End to galvanize the attack amidst  an injury crisis at Old Trafford last season.

But another injury against Shrewsbury in his second game for the Red Devils curtailed his season that term and with a number of quality forwards at his disposal, current manager Mourinho has decided to offload him, as the new boss continues his squad trimming.

On his transfer from United, Keane said: “I’m really excited. For me, it’s a fresh start and a new challenge so I’m looking forward to coming here and getting underway.”

“I’m 23 now so I wanted to come here on a permanent deal and get settled. My aim is to play as many games as possible and get a real run of games hopefully to help the team do well.”

Mourinho launches attack on top Manchester United star

Schweinsteiger-1

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has taken a jibe at Bastian Schweinsteiger and trolled his former club Bayern Munich in his own style.

Marked with the anchored float of unsettling rumours of his uncertain Old Trafford future, veteran German midfielder  vowed that United will be his last club in Europe, as he issued this message on his official twitter account.

bas

Schweinsteiger was even linked with a move to the Major League Soccer, but the experienced midfielder committed his future to United. But Mourinho does not seem to be very impressed with the idea, as he has openly stated that the 32-year-old can stay at the club to see through his remaining two years of contract, but he will not probably play. Not only this, the boss said that even the academy young midfielders will also be higher in the pecking order than Schweinsteiger.

The international friendly with Finland is going to be Schweinsteiger’s final appearance for Germany. The public tonguelash of Mourinho, might well be a ploy to offload the star, who is on a staggering £200,000-a-week wage.

Even Bayern Munich could not evade Mourinho’s sarcasmic wrath, as the gaffer mocked them for not following up their rumoured interest in capturing their ex-skipper on the silhouette of vast censure in Germany that he has treated the star disrespectfully.

”I think it’s very difficult for Schweinsteiger to play this season. I’m not saying it’s impossible. I’m saying it’s very difficult. We have a decision made about Pogba, Herrera, Scheniderlin, Fellaini and Carrick. That’s five players for two positions. It’s very, very difficult that an opportunity will arise,” Mourinho explained.

“If we have any kind of problem or opportunity. I have a few young players in the academy that I will be more than happy to accelerate their process by bringing them up.”

“I have spoken to him about it. I cannot answer for him. It’s his life. It’s his career. He has a contract with Man United and he has a right to make that decision and stay. That’s not a problem for us.”

”Football is made of decisions. I did that all my career. Not just me, everyone does. Some players react in a different way and have those kind of decisions. To be honest Bastian is not speaking a lot. He gave this last statement, which he is free to do in an objective and polite way like he did.”

“No problems at all. I thought after I read some quotes from people at Bayern Munich that they would run to Manchester to bring him back, but no, it did not happen.” – concluded United manager on Schweinsteiger issue

Mourinho opens up about possibility of Manchester United completing fifth signing

MOURINHO

After the completions of much vaunted, much anticipated summer transfers to Manchester United, of high profile stars like Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, with Eric Bailly being the icing on the cake, manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that a ”quiet” wrap up of this transfer window is to be expected.

As the transfer window is coming to an end, Mourinho says he expects a ”very quiet” final few days in the transfer arena, with the Red Devils boss being content with the squad he has at his disposal.

During recent days, Southampton defender Jose Fonte has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford, reports the Manchester Evening News. The Portuguese international was set to become United’s fifth signing of the summer transfer window. But today’s Mourinho quotes have poured cold water on these speculations.

United helmsman Mourinho has said today in his presser: “I have 23 players in the squad and in principle there is nobody leaving and nobody is coming.”

“Twenty-three players is more than enough and, if you have a problem or an opportunity, then I have a few young players in the Academy that I will be more than happy to give an acceleration in their process.”

“I like Cameron Borthwick-Jackson very much but he will go to Wolverhampton to play [on loan] because I have Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind to play left-back. These are the kind of decisions every club makes.”

“I think we are going to have a very quiet week, not surrounded by helicopters waiting for someone to arrive or leave – I am more than happy with the squad I have.”

Whether these quotes are sugarcoated because of Mourinho’s rumoured failure to lure Raphael Varane to United or the boss is indeed happy with the existing squad, one can never know. But, the squad depth and squad management under ‘The Special One’ have indeed been special, as the Portuguese made shrewd signings, as well as made clever loan moves.

Photo: Manchester United confirm defender’s permanent transfer

Tyler Blackett

Manchester United defender Tyler Blackett has completed his transfer to Reading on a permanent deal on Monday, August 22.

The 22-year-old came up through the ranks of the club’s youth system and was given a first team debut two years ago when Louis van Gaal was the manager. He was a regular inclusion in the starting lineup at the start of the 2014/15 season, but saw his first team opportunities limited in the previous campaign.

The Red Devils have confirmed the transfer on their official website. A statement read, ” Young defender Tyler Blackett has completed a transfer from Manchester United to Reading, the Championship club managed by Treble-winner and Reds legend Jaap Stam.”

The left back (with left centre-back being his auxiliary position) departed from Old Trafford and joining Reading, where he signed a four-year deal.  The fee is officially  undisclosed though, it is reportedly believed to be around £5 million. Blackett is going to be managed by  United legend Jaap Stam at the Championship side.

A statement on Reading’s official website read, “We are delighted to confirm that Tyler Blackett has today signed a four-year contract with Reading Football Club, joining the Royals on a permanent deal from Manchester United. “

After his unsuccessful loan spell at Celtic last season, where he managed to make only eight appearances in six months, he would be keen for  upturn of fortunes.

As United legend and Reading manager Stam completed his eleventh signing this summer with the arrival of Blackett, he told Reading’s official website, as reported by The Guardian: ”As we know, Tyler is a talented defender who has played for United’s first team.”

“He can play as a left-back or a left-sided centre-back. He has got great potential in the sense that he is quick and athletic, defensively he is strong and he is good at set pieces. As a defender he can go and play high up the pitch as well and that is what we need in the squad.”
