Tevez Can Play Alongside Rooney

Tag: Manchester United News @ 11:07 am

Today’s rumours have been mostly in repeat mode with us linked with Tevez and Liverpool linked with Gaby Heinze. So we’ll save the speculation for another day.

Today we will talk about our favourite player once again, Carlos Tevez. If you are getting increasingly bored about Tevez worship deal with it. Or no. In fact, go away. Find another worthwhile article to read that does not talk about transfer rumours or something.

While we were saying yesterday that there are two clubs in the Premiership, namely Liverpool and Manchester United, that are capable of buying Tevez, news was filtering through that Pool had almost certainly acquired Torres. Now that would almost definitely keep only us in the race, if we are interested that is. Arsenal’s history, of parsimonious buys, means they would rather go for the likes of Anelka, Martins or Owen.

We won’t debate on whether he’ll come here, or not. But how he will be played, if he does come.

Whenever there is talk of Tevez there is this feeling that he is too similar to Rooney and will not complement him. I think there are a lot of misplaced notions with regards to that. I will try to break these myths if I can.

Tevez, like Rooney, isn’t good aerially.

I don’t think so. While, admittedly, Rooney isn’t a great header of the ball, I have seen plenty of diving headers from Tevez for Argentina and Corinthians. Sure, he’s not tall. He’s taken time to settle at West Ham and played at a deeper role. There, really, weren’t too many opportunities for him showcase his full array of skills. And honestly, he was playing in front of a shitty West Ham midfield that couldn’t give decent service to save their lives.

But more importantly, we play a much different style these days, as opposed to the days of the flying wingers and Beckham’s searching crosses. Lot’s of teams have succeeded (Barcelona, for one) without having players strong in the air. In a fluid formation, like our current one, a person strong in the air could be used to come off the bench, for variety, when things are not going well. Otherwise, Tevez himself is a decent header of the ball.

Tevez, like Rooney, plays better as a deep lying striker

This, I don’t agree with at all. Rooney for one, has led the line more this season than he’s ever done in the past. While Saha did that in the early part of the season, and Larsson in the first 2-1/2 months of 2007, Rooney has figured more at the head during crucial times during the title run-in. Little wonder, this season has been the most productive for him goal-wise. So much for the early criticism that he wasn’t in form!

Tevez is also a great finisher, make no mistake. If you did see his most recent goal for Argentina in the Copa America game against USA, for example, you will see my point. He had not seen enough of the ball at West Ham, while also having to create a lot of chances himself.

So how will he be played, if he comes to United?

I’d think SAF would let Rooney lead the line, and Tevez play the shadow striker. But they will interchange roles, making it difficult for defenders. Both players are physically imposing, so they will be handful for many. Their constant movement will also make it possible for the wingers to cut in for more opportunities. Rooney on his own upfront may not be the right way to go. But Rooney alongside another striker, who works his socks off on the pitch, is a deadly prospect.

Something which, at present, is wishful thinking. Oh well, what do you guys think? (I know there has been a little too much of Tevez. But the lad plays decent football, doesn’t he?) :)

  • Ahmed, if Liverpool meet the buyout clause for Heinze (I understand there is one?) we wont have much say on the matter will we?

Also is Heinze one of that players in a position to buy himself out of his contract on the cheap, given his age? I doubt it would though.

Excellent article. Tevez unlike Rooney is a darn good finisher. And he is used to playing as a lone striker. He did it a lot at Corinthians an Boca. He and Rooney would be wondrful together.

I’m certain we will sign either him or Berbatov.

  • Tevez is a high class striker, no doubt about it. The idea that he spent a full season with a lack-luster west ham side and single handedly kept them in, on the last day, against the premiership champs. Talk about pressure, i reckon he’d take the no. 9 shirt and wear it with pride.
Tevez and rooney would play off against one another, swapping rolls and as red ranter said making it difficult for defenders. Forget Berbatov, we should…neigh, MUST sign TEVEZ!!!

  • Tevez costs something like 35 or 40 million so I hear for which we could have gotten Torres who for probably the last time now that he is joining the scum I really thought would be a fantastic player and it’s a shame SAF just stood by and let this waste of talent possible. I for one think that Tevez isn’t worth the price and you never know what his contract situation is, I mean is he still a West Ham player or was he released?

  • Tevez plays for his owner – this Kia Joorabchian character – who leases him out to whatever club is willing to pay for it… that’s how I understand it, but I might be mistaken?

I think Heinze loves Man United too much to make the switch to Liverpool… it’s a big no-no, and he knows. But he is allowed to buy himself out of his contract for the value of the remaining contract (app. £6 mil I think). I’m pretty sure that, if he leaves, he’ll go south to Spain or Italy (he’d fit really well in Italy imo).

About Tevez: he would be devastating alongside Rooney because of his movement and skill. He’s very quick on the first 10 yards + he’s so good at receiving the ball and finding space (much like Rooney) that no defense would know what to do with them. And then we’d have Saha and Rossi as well (when probably Smith leaves) – what a front line to showcase. Movement and speed combined with excellent skill – I really hope we get him. If we do, Liverpool can buy all the Torres’s in the world and they’ll still trail by 20 points come May 2008 ( and Chelsea too).

  • Yes, they could play together, switching back and forth. It would take a little time for the two to read each other, but they are both clever footballers.

I think Tevez has even more movement than Rooney, can also beat defenders, and is a more ‘natural finisher’.

The other quality I like about Tevez is he’s such an honest player, always up for the game, he’s no ‘sunshine player’.

However I’m not encouraged by rumours that he would prefer Madrid.

  • And Tevez can take some wicked free kicks!!

  • Spot on with the free kick. Tevez scored some great freekicks last season. Something we havent been able to do. Some will argue that Ronaldo scored some scorchers too, but his way of taking the kicks are highly un-predictable

  • Ronaldo should learn the way Becks takes the freekick. Haha.

Tevez seems to be a good candidate….as compared to the likes of Defoe, Anelka, Quagrileaa (never get his name right).

  • I agree, a R&T combination would be great. If we can’t get B then go for Tevez, it’s that simple. I don’t agree that they’re too similar, but what if they are? I mean 2 Rooneys upfront will be lethal. It will be just better with Tevez adding a south-american flavor to it.

I think the 35-40 million pounds is a little ridiculous. Especially now when Torres has gone for 27 mills. Torres is older than Tevez and has played in a higher league than Tevez for a longer time. (Tevez is potentially better, but I want the prices to be governed by that argument!)

  • It’s becoming increasingly impossible to set a market value standard… especially for strikers. RvN for £10,2 mil, Sheva for £30 mil, Henry for £16 mil, Torres for £27 mil… there’s just no rhythm in the market anymore.

Tevez shouldn’t cost more than £25-30 mil, but we may even struggle to fund that. We need to offload Richardson (£4 mil), Smith (£6 mil), Silvestre or Heinze (£4 or £6 mil) to maybe have a shot at him. I can’t see many more players we can afford to lose. Eagles could go, but he’d only bring in £2-3 mil. Then we’re back to the question of selling either Pique or Rossi, but I’d hate either sale, because I think both have great futures at our club. Or the Glazers should come up with the remaining £10-15 mil themselves… could that happen?

  • I still feel Fabio Quagliarella would be an absolute bargain…

  • I think we can get Tevez for a good deal. If anyone buys him it will be alot less for what he is worth. Just like Ronaldo, he will go up in price and in the end it will be a good deal on our part. If we get him we will have more mobility in our attack. Right now we dont really need a striker, we scored alot of goals last season from what we have. Adding Tevez will give us more creativity to our attack. We could also use him to take our corners and take advantage of Ronaldos aerial abilities.

  • Good one mate, Two Rooneys upfront.

Tevez’s got the strength, skill, flamboyancy, and also the flair that we need. But he doesn’t have the height, nevermind.

  • Robbo the Dinho

I for one am very excited at the prospect of having Rooney and Tevez partnered up front. It will bring alot to Uniteds attack as both this players are hard workers and both know how to play the target man and in the hole. This will be great for transitional plays. As for Heinze, I do not want to see him move from Old Trafford as he is a top notch player and will be a very important figure to get Tevez to United as he will help Tevez settle at United and this will prove pivotal in actually getting Tevez. Just look at Mascherano at Liverpool, the Spanish influence there does help alot. COME ON UNITED
