Tevez Update: It Might Just Happen

More reports are pouring in. They are all over the place. And now, it’s the BBC’s turn..

BBC’s Radio Five Live Sport thinks a deal could be done by the weekend. Nice. Really, nice. For those living under a rock (or sleeping, or plain stoned), for the past few hours, please read this.

I know, these reports can be overwhelming, at times, due to the suddenness (that have generally characterized United’s moves this summer). I’d therefore advise you all to take some deep breaths and get some medical insurance in the event of this deal falling through. Yes, that is very much possible, gentle readers.

The Telegraph’s headline also seems pretty confident, although it looks more like a copy paste of earlier reports.

About the deal though, here’s my take. Most reports contend that United will cross 70 million pounds of spending, this season, if they buy Tevez. I say, our spending will not have even exceeded 40 million. If you consider just this season.

Ever since the Glazers arrived, they have made more structured deals. Deals that involve paying up over a period of say, two or three seasons. Even the Nani and Anderson deals are potentially worth 30 million. Not a down payment kind of a deal. These amounts are subject to performance, and if their performances help us win titles, then I think 30 million is money well spent.

Tevez from his time with the Corinthians

Plus, contrary to what rivals fans may think, our spending still has plenty of prudence behind them. Love them or hate them, the Glazers are known to milk every penny as they come. So when they do spend, it is out of proper deliberation. So Tevez’s deal, while being touted for 20 million, would most likely be a loan deal with a down payment of 5 million to keep Kia happy, with a clause of having first option for a pre-specified fee. So our spending would be 20 million for Hargreaves, 15 million (approx.) for Nani+Anderson and 5 million for Tevez. That should make it 40 million. Of course, I haven’t factored the imminent sales these purchases would entail. Sales of Richardson, Smith and possibly Silvestre might add up to around 12 million for the most conservative minded. That would bring our net spending to around 28 million. Remember, we sold more than we bought last season, and spent only 6 million, the season before last.

If the Tevez deal does happen, trust United to make sure things stay clean, as far as the ownership of the player is concerned.

Anyhow, until it comes from the horse’s mouth, we will continue with the bated-breaths and crossed-fingers routine.

Does this affect the possible sale of Heinze? Given how close the pair are (allegedly) would we be more likely to keep Heinze if Tevez is signed? It would aid his settling in and reduce the problems posed by the language barrier.

@Aus_Devil - my sentiments exactly. Regardless, I will take any excuse to keep Heinze. :-)

The pair are reportedly very good pals

Heinze invited Tevez as a guest to Utds party celebration after winning the league

Perhaps Heinze was one of the reasons why he chose Utd

If Tevez does join Utd, I would expect Heinze to stay with Silvestre possibly leaving - Bordeaux and Sunderland possible suitors

When I read the article, I also got the impression that Heinze was “instrumental” in him coming over. It would not make sense then to sell Heinze.
I’m not one to advocate player sales, but, I think we should rather sell Silvestre (and perhaps Brown) and KEEP onto Heinze. He can fill in central if need be.

I think if Tevez has been got on loan, it is perfect. Because this gives us many options:
    a. Send Rossi on a one year loan stint, this time in the premiership, so he can get premiership experience, and we can can pull him back in January, if many injuries happen and he adapts well to the league.
    b. If Tevez is on loan, then this gives us the opportunity to test him out for a year, before deciding on a permanent deal for him. If he turns out good, we buy him off, else we get Berbatov, depending on his form this year! It is almost certain he will move out of Spurs next year if they don’t get into CL, so if he is in good form, then offload Tevez and get him.
    c. If both turn out to be not that good (which I very much doubt, I just love both Tevez and Berbatov), then we can go for someone else or if Rossi turns out to be good, then no need of any new striker!!
SAF’s great! Extremely shrewd business deal if its Tevez on loan!!

Tevez’s arrival seems imminent and I also cannot wait to see it happen. Previously I was doubting his credibility but not any more. With Liverpool having signed Torres, who was my favourite to come to Old Trafford, I now think that we need Tevez and Heinze should also not leave. Sivestre should be the one to go.

  12. Aus_Devil says: Reply to this comment

It all does sound quite possible. Keeping Heinze and buying (or loaning) Tevez sounds good. We can then sell Richardson, Smith and Silvestre (and Bardsley?) to clear some squad space and bring back some cash.

    My only concerns are…
    1) That we now have a lot of CF/AM in the squad (Rooney, Anderson, Ronaldo, Nani + Tevez etc.) and not a clear out-and-out striker who can lead the attack. The way football is going, and with the development of Rooney into more of a loan forward - this may not be too big an issue.
    2) Where does this leave Rossi? I think we should try and give him a chance to establish himself in the side this year and decide once and for all whether he is good enough for Man U. Given the likelihood that Saha will miss games early in the season it might be worth keeping Rossi for at least the first half of the season to see how he goes and then possibly loaning him out for the second half of the year if he is lacking game time.

The fact that Rooney was given the number 10 shirt, suggested that he will be played more as the lead striker. The thought of Tevez alongside or playing slightly deeper than Rooney would transform our attack like never before. The strength of United is our ability to attack from everywhere, to attack from angles and drop off people. Precisely the reason why we selected to move away from having a Ruud type player upfront. Movement is now not just something to praise, it is essential to winning games. Tevez, Rooney, Ronaldo, Nani and Anderson all give us dynamic options. If this deal goes through, then this could be one of the best summer transfer windows I have ever known as a United fan….

All this selling heinze is not something i can swallow why in the world u want to sell a player who in 2005 was the matt bubsy player of the year i was his fan since and i am still
i’d rather have him then evra
And yes i was’nt that keen on tevez as he might be quite similar to rooney and now that torress has just joined the enemies but anyways i see rooney in a lil subdued role and more of a second stiker to tevez if this falls straight but this makes me wonder whats gonna happen to Smith/Saha And my dear Rossi???
And why the hell nothing is being talked about bardsley, pique, evans (both Chris and Jonny)
oh yes its still july thats why
maybe united are two quick this year
I cant wait 4 the premeirship to start Go united

I wouldn’t mind Tevez coming but I still think that Saviola would have been a better value signing with almost the same package but I suppose if you have the money you might as well spend it, I just wish Fergie had taken the option of signing Tevez and Mascherano last Summer which would have saved us the money on Hargreaves as well

I have been following Tevez since his days at Boca (Where his shirt was printed with ‘Carlitos’) I when he secured a move into Brazil I knew he would soon be coming to Europe. Real for sure I thought. I was very disappointed to hear he was going to be a Hammer last year and felt Utd was missing something big.

I absolutely relish the thought of him in a Red’s kit.

TBH I was wondering how we would counter Henry/Eto/Ronaldinho. I knew we wouldn’t spring for a ‘SuperStar’ striker with our previous summer transfers. But that Barca line-up will be a handfull for Europe. Kinda scary actually.

Tevez and Rooney may not have the ___________’Finess’ (insert what-ever skills you think they lack here) of the Barca attack. But those two up front will be like a pack of pit-bulls tenaciously tearing down defences.

  26. Rylie says: Reply to this comment

Rylie - I think you’re missing Barca’s best player in Messi. He’s the one teams really need to focus on as he’s often the driving force behind Barca’s success.

Tevez would be a great addition to the squad as he’s dangerous from anywhere on the Pitch. I think he’s an unselfish player that knows how to move well off the ball. A team with Tevez and Rooney up front and then Ronaldo and Giggs/Nani on the wings should provide enough talent to break down European defenses in the Champs league while providing depth for the long prem season.

I think it’s a great move if it does in fact happen, but it’s early and it appears the player isn’t aware of any imminent deal (based on his comments posted on various sites.)

If it doesn’t happen I think there’s enough talent/depth in the squad for the next campaign although I would like to see one additional striker to replace smudge.

hey guys………. its not a done deal yet……… take a look at this….

    http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=443675&cc=5901

even if man utd agree on a deal, if MSI and west ham cant agree on the ownership of tevez, then we can kiss this deal goodbye……. TBH, i dont want to see tevez coming if this issue is gonna follow him to Manchester

Further to my comment yesterday that United’s attack, with Tevez, would ‘transform our attack like never before’ the broadsheets online our only today realising this…

Do you agree? Is this the most fluid, dangerous attack United could put together?
