United must lay down a marker against rivals

Man-Utd-v-EvertonRyan Giggs has urged Manchester United to show they can go head-to-head with title favourites Chelsea and Manchester City and show more consistency than they’ve done so far.

Despite a slow start, United entered the international the break in fourth spot, eight points behind league leaders Chelsea but only three points adrift of City, with the former due at Old Trafford on October 26, while the latter will host United the following week. Giggs insisted that while Chelsea have been impressive and City have looked solid, only a positive result against both clubs will give a valid indication of how far United have come under Louis Van Gaal.

“Chelsea have probably been the standout team so far with City just behind them and we want to be up there testing ourselves against those teams,” he said.

“We feel that we do belong up there but we perhaps haven’t shown it consistently this season.”

With three wins in their last four Premier League games United have finally started to make progress and Giggs is confident they can kick on.

“We’ve shown glimpses over the last few weeks and hopefully we’ll have a lot of players coming back for those games,” Giggs said.

“The form has slowly begun to get better and better and we want to hit form going into those matches.”
