United scrape past Philly, but Fergie’s comments on Vidic grab headlines

Or should we say his lack of comment? His economy of phrasing ought to get tongues wagging.

When quizzed about speculation regarding Vidic leaving OT, he said, “I can’t clarify it at all.” Journalists pressed further and asked if he was going to play at United this season and he replied, “I believe so.”

By not saying much, he’s not only cast a lot of doubt, he’s essentially confirmed what was till now routine speculation doing the rounds in hushed whispers. It is different if Vidic was vague about his future. Ferguson is usually protective about his players. He was vehement in denial about Ronaldo till the day news of his transfer popped-up as a terse statement on the official website.

Perhaps he’s had enough of his or his agent’s machinations behind the scenes? I can’t say. To the optimists, he’s going to play for us this coming season. At least they’ll believe so.

In the event of his transfer without adequate replacement, it would mean a reliance on an injury-ravaged Ferdinand, a young upcoming Jonny Evans, Wes Brown who has his own injury history to deal with, a stop-gap like O’Shea, and a debutant in Chris Smalling. Not the worst defensive line-up, but the strength of a successful side is in a settled defence.

* * *

Meanwhile, United got another pre-season friendly under its belt. I think this pre-season tour to North America has been pretty good, insofar as the competitive levels of the matches. Both Celtic and Philadelphia Union gave us a good game. And it’s upto us to make good use of it. I’m not reading too much into pre-season though, but I had a few thoughts on it anyway. Rafael when he came on was impressive; Evans looked alright. The midfield seemed to be run over at times, although I felt Cleverley seemed to have an eye for a pass whenever he got the chance. We should see a lot of him this time during the Carling Cup. Maybe even a few appearances in the league. Obertan was frustrating nearly throughout the game despite his goal. Welbeck ran around a lot, put in a good shift, but his first touch was dreadful, finishing poor, and generally happened to make the wrong decision while making a pass. Maybe this is my personal opinion on Welbeck in general—that I don’t think he’ll become a United regular—but he wasn’t all that great yesterday. Macheda seemed to have lost a touch of pace and was out of sorts.

This is one thing we should accept about our strikers—Welbeck and Macheda—in terms of their pecking order: they are going to be below Rooney, Berbatov, Owen, Hernandez and Diouf. Our formation last season favoured more of a single striker (with Rooney up front). At any rate, we are still going to see fierce competition for striker berths at the Carling Cup level. One of Macheda or Welbeck will have to go out on loan. And Ferguson will probably decide which one after this pre-season gets over.

Berbatov was a calming influence and actually led to a more fluid attack when he came on.

And that’s all I have to say about the match.

Your thoughts in the comments welcome.

@CraigMc: Doesn’t matter what Nani gets up to in his private life, as long as he gives it all on the field and improve as the boss would like him to (& he has been tops so far!). Anderson on the other hand, is trying to muck up his career before proving anything, or he is truly what Grognard says – useless. Ronaldo may have crashed his car, but when he did it, he had proven he is world class (in football and not personality). Not too sure if it will make him work harder in football.. I hope for the best, it he improves a hell-lot, our midfield would be stronger!

@CraigMc: It was reported that Nani, Anderson and the greasy one were “entertaining” ladies of the night at Ronnies home mate, doesn’t bother me I have to say 😆 😆 !!
Anderson is and will alwys be a waste of space, I have said it for years we need to get rid of bad rubbish.

    August 2, 2010 at 4:31 pm

CraigMc good to know about Nani.

But to me Anderson seems to think he is the next Ronaldinho. The difference being that Ronaldinho actually had talent. But even Ronaldinho with all his talent had his career tail off at a very young age as a result of his partying. Anderson’s won’t even get started because when you have as little talent as Anderson you should be working every hour God gives improving your football.

Oh for the days when Fergie didn’t coddle his young players. Nowadays Fergie is too soft. If I was Fergie I would give Anderson a curfew each night and confiscate his passport.

OPT those fans must be pretty stupid! Signing Owen was pure desperation, the same way that Liverpool signed Joe Cole. A nail in the coffin which proved to many of us that the financial calamity was a reality.

When you consider the wages we spend on Owen that money could have gone towards a new signing.

I think Anderson should be shown the door. Off pitch and On pitch, he doesn’t deserve to be at OT. About Vidic, if he leaves, it will be a major setback for our already vulnerable defence.

How much to dislike Anderson? Well let me put it this way, when I heard about the accident and saw the picture of his demolished sports car, my immediate thought was what a shame it was destroying that nice car. I’m not proud of myself but the truth is when I take a dislike to somebody, I’m a merciless unsympathetic bastard. I’m glad he wasn’t killed as I would only wish that on the Glazer family, John Terry, Carles Puyol and Michel Platini, but he needs some kind of wake up call and humbling experience to help him appreciate what he has and to assist in helping him grow up and get the proper focus on things.

So, even though were spent. Even though I still want Ozil at the club more than anything, we might not be buying a player in the coming year.
In that case…. What do you think Our best formation and lineup would be?

I’d go for a 4-2-3-1. We need some added class….

    What do you guys think?

The rumor of Real Madrid midfielder Diarra has gathered pace.He will cost around 15 million.

But really do we need him or we should take Ozil for around 12 million?

  13. Owen

    August 3, 2010 at 1:51 pm

There is also talk that Manchester United will move for German attacking midfielder Piotr Trochowski if they fail to lure Mesut Ozil to Old Trafford.

    Inter Milan B team 3 Man city 0 🙄

  15. colver

    August 3, 2010 at 3:19 pm

Diarra is a good player but we don’t really need him as we have players like Cleverley and Gibson capable of beoming box to box defensive midfielders. But we have NO-ONE with any degree of skill or creativity in our midfield once Giggs and Scholes retire.

That is why we should do whatever it takes to buy Ozil. I am sure we are able to put together £16 million. With the amount of debt we have what is a little more? Barcelona borrowed to buy Villa. So lets do this.

Buy Ozil and you have a player that will be worth £40 million in a few seasons but equally be able to help us stay in the top four that much longer.

  16. colver

    August 3, 2010 at 3:37 pm

Also Ive said it once and Ive said it again. I think the Barcelona players should be gagged. Every day I see a different player complaining about how Arsenal are keeping Fabregas against his wishes, how it is his destiny to join Barcelona and all that shit. It is so disrespectful.

Fabregas signed a CONTRACT with Arsenal. No-one forced him to do so. And Arsenal are perfectly entitled to keep him until his contract expires.

If Barcelona want him so badly they should make a respectable bid rather than trying to use dirty tactics to try and force the price down.

  17. Traverse

    August 3, 2010 at 4:33 pm

@Owen: Diarra would be a stupid waste of money. We’ve got Darren Fletcher, why would we need Diarra? Ozil is so blatantly obviously the one player we need to take our team/squad the step forward we need to put us back at the top of the Premiership and in Champions League finals.

When Ronaldo was sold, people said we wouldn’t score. Rooney scored, but nobody has been as creative as Ronaldo was. Ronaldo, however, was mostly creative only for himself. Someone like Ozil can be creative for the team. With Nani and Valencia down the wings and Rooney up top, this guy could pull the strings and we would once again be unstoppable.

If not unstoppable, at least be damn good, and play the attacking football that we’ve become accustomed to since ’92, not the ‘worry about the opposition’ football we’ve been playing this season, and the last couple in the Europe.

  18. Owen

    August 3, 2010 at 5:05 pm

@Traverse: But Ozil has not yet proved himself. He was just good/great for 3 matches. He has no defensive qualities for which Fergie has great love.Where as Lass will be ideal signing for Fergie due to this particular ability.

  19. Traverse

    August 3, 2010 at 5:23 pm

He was shit hot in the u21 Euro’s the other year (Germany won it, beating England 4-0 in the final and with Ozil) and we’ve been tracking him since before then, so we obviously think he’s got something.

  20. Owen

    August 3, 2010 at 5:37 pm

@Traverse: I have no faith in these under age tournaments.I think Anderson was the player of the tournament chosen in some type of these under-age ones.
I am surprised why Shitty have not yet inquired about Ozil.

  21. Traverse

    August 3, 2010 at 5:41 pm

under 17’s and so on I may agree with you, but the u21’s ? I think you are a bit misguided there, if only by the fact that the German team that won the last on featured Ozil, Neuer, Kadira, Marin and Boateng. One just moved to City, one just moved to Madrid, and United are interested in (and could do with signing) 2 of the other three!

The reason Citeh arent interested in Ozil is because he isnt a defensive midfielder, a winger or a striker!

  22. [OPTI]Madschester United

@Traverse: Citty havent shown interest because they have about 10 too many players right now…

  23. tonymontanna4united

    August 3, 2010 at 6:23 pm

@Darth Red Diablo: I really like the 4-2-3-1 formation and think it would suit us well. All i would say though is wazza is probably better off playing as the front man after his performances last season. Saying that though ive always thought he looked more dangerous playing behind the front man but as i say after last season its probably best to leave him where he is, as they say if it aint broke dont fix it.
I would like to see ozil brought in and have him play behind wazza. Replace carrick with someone like rodwell (next season more likely) and were looking about a top top team.
Imagine if your the opposition defenders and you have nani, valencia, ozil and rooney facing you. That front 4 would tear most defences apart.
Best thing about them would be they are still under 25, so arent even at their peak yet and all but valencia can move positions causing more chaos to the defenders. This would be reminicent to the attacking 07/08 quartet of giggs, rooney, ronaldo and tevez who caused merry hell against opposition defences all year long.
However its not going to happen and i have come to terms with it. Shame as i really think ozil would have made a massive difference to this team.

  24. tonymontanna4united

    August 3, 2010 at 6:32 pm

@Owen: Lassana diarra i take it and not the other one. Tbh i wouldnt mind seeing him, i know a more attacking midfielder is needed but for me were still in need of a world class ball winner. Dont get me wrong i like fletcher and think he has improved a hell of a lot in a short space of time, but imo he just doesnt do it for a whole season. Last season after about january imo he was very on and off, as he seemd the season before but poor before january and good after. I just have worries he doesnt last a whole season playing at his best, and could do with a diarra to replace hargo and add competition to this very poor midfield.
But ive said it many times the man i want more than anyone else in our midfield right now is jack rodwell. Not gonna happen though i know but in a dream world if i was manager he and ozil would be brought in, no matter what the price.

  25. tonymontanna4united

    August 3, 2010 at 6:43 pm

@colver: Agree, it seems disgusting the barca players can be allowed to get away with this, pressurising him to join them. You can bet if it was us trying to persuade rodwell to join, with rooney leading the calls, FIFA would step in and threaten to fine us for trying to unsettle an opposition player.
But because they are spanish and the golden boys of football in the eyes of the twat platini, they must be doing nothing wrong, its all arsenals fault. Cruel cruel arsenal, keeping a player against his will like a slave 😡 🙄

  26. tonymontanna4united

    August 3, 2010 at 6:59 pm

@Owen: Mate i agree diarra would be a good signing because imo we need another ball winner, but i dont see how you can say ozil hasnt proved himself.
The guy is still just 21 and was one of the best players in the bundesliga last year (got 9 goals and 15 assists i think). He then went to the WC with huge expectation and faced with the task of replacing captain ballack. Not only did germany not miss ballack a bit, but ozil showed the world what he could do and was in the top 5 of best players in the whole tournament. Also as Trav said he was one of the stars at the U21 tournament 1 year ago.
At the end of the day hes only 21, not many players are world stars at that age. Yet ozil just in the last 12 months has already shown he was a top talent by being one of the best players in the U21s, having a great season for werder, and being one of the stars of the WC. Not even ronaldo at 21 had achieved what ozil has done. I would bet every penny i have if ozil makes the move here he will be one of the top 5 players in the world in the next 3/4 years, and his £20m value could easily have trebled.
Thats how highly i rate him and thats why i am so eager to see him come here. Do i think he will come here though? Not really which is a crying shame and utter stupidity on fergusons part for not doing everything he can to sign this guy.

1.Wayne Rooney was upstaged on his return to training this morning by Manchester United team-mate Nani, who put the England striker in a spin with his hot new wheels.

Rooney arrived at the club’s Carrington training headquarters in his red 10 plate Audi RS6.

Just days after colleague Anderson’s near-fatal collision in his Audi R8 in Portugal, Nani cruised through the entrance gates in his flash Lamborghini Gallardo.

2.It seems within 15 days ,Pools will get a new owner and they will try to sign Messi also.Manager will be provided with unlimited funds and he can demand any player he wants.

@Owen: that pool deal is fishy the offer was basically a foreclosure offer to the bank that holds their debt and not a offer to hicks/gillett. they told them that their shares in the club were worthless and offered the bank a deal of cash+ for the debt. i think h/g wont take that as they want a big profit on their investment but if this “bank buy”? is successfull then it may be a road map for the red knights but dont get your hopes up as the glazers are making their payments on time and the bank is loving it.

@elvido: You beat me to it mate. I read that article and finally found some of the loyalty I used to have for Fergie swimming back in my head somewhere. Messi is a little cunt. He can just go fuck himself. All along I have been saying what a little cunt he is but nobody would hear of it. Hell, he’s not even the best player in the world and I stick by that statement.

I may be down on Fergie but here is a time when I stand by him and demand satisfaction. Tevez didn’t want love, he wanted playing time. Problem was he sucked so he lost his starting role due to the fact that running around like a headless chicken might thrill blue collar people who are all thumbs but for fans like myself, we are a little more evolved and could see through his one dimensional veneer. Sure Berbatov may not have been the perfect fit but I still stand by the fact he has more skill in hi pinky than Carlito has in that midget body. As for Messi, well what can I say, MIDGETS STICK TOGETHER. 🙄
