United target going nowhere

dani-alves-barcelona_3312627Manchester United have been dealt a blow after Barcelona’s right-back Dani Alves has opted to extend his deal with the newly-crowned Champions League winners.

The 32-year-old had emerged as one of Louis Van Gaal’s main targets this summer, as the United manager sought to bolster his defensive options, but has chosen to remain at the Camp Nou for at least another two seasons.

Over the last few months, the Brazilian had publicly admitted that his seven-year spell with the Catalan giants was coming to an end, claiming he had felt disrespected by the club.

At 32 years of age and with the defensive side of his game coming under intense scrutiny over the last two seasons, some argued Alves would have not fit the bill at United, although his experience would have proved a valuable asset to the side.

Furthermore, while the former Sevilla man remains defensively suspicious, he’s a threat going forward and a much better option that Antonio Valencia altogether.

However, as it turned out, Alves was simply using United’s interest to secure himself a better deal at Barcelona, a tactic to which a number of players, including Thomas Mueller, have resorted in the past.
