United will let Di Maria leave only if he asks

5540fbce4a95e_dggdManchester United will not sell Angel Di Maria unless the Argentine demands to be sold, as the former Real Madrid man remains an important figure in Louis Van Gaal’s plans.

Arrived at Old Trafford for a club-record fee of £59.7m after playing a pivotal role in Real Madrid’s quest for a 10th European Cup, Di Maria hit the ground running before his season soon petered out amid a catalogue of injury problems and growing rumours linking him with a move to PSG.

However, according to Ian Ladyman of the Daily Mail, United will not try to recoup part of the money they splashed out last summer on the Argentine, unless he submits a transfer request.

The 27-year-old, who limped out of United’s final game of the season after just 20 minutes with a hamstring injury, is on PSG’s radar as he was 12 months ago, but Van Gaal is convinced that he can be a success at the club, as long as he gets a good pre-season under his belt.

Following Real Madrid’s European Cup triumph last season, Di Maria was among Argentina’s best players at the World Cup, although he was forced to miss the final against Germany because of a hamstring problem and he seemed to be running on empty after his first month in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Van Gaal is understood to have told Jonny Evans, Nani, Anders Lindegaard and Rafael that they are surplus to requirements and will be moved on in the summer, while Tom Cleverley, whose contract expires at the end of the season, will be free to join a new club.
