Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford put in a man of the match performance and scored the winner as England beat Slovakia 2-1 in their 2018 World Cup qualifier at Wembley this evening.
England had to come from a goal down in the opening three minutes to win the game which leaves Gareth Southgate’s side five points ahead of the group with two games remaining.
Victory for the Three Lions against either Slovenia or Lithuania next month would guarantee their place at the 2018 World Cup.
Marcus Rashford conceded possession deep inside his own half which led to Slovakia taking a surprise lead in what was only the third goal England have conceded in their eight qualifying matches.
It took until the half hour mark before England finally got on top of the match in which they had been expected to win pre-game. In the final 10 minutes of the first half Rashford delivered the corner from which Eric Dier delightfully half-volleyed home England’s equaliser.
The United forward then produced an excellent long-range effort on 59 minutes into the far corner of Martin Dubravka’s goal which turned out to be the winner. England managed the game well in the final half hour.
Rashford was replaced by Danny Welbeck in the final 10 minutes. Phil Jones played the full 90 minutes alongside Gary Cahill in the centre of England’s defence.
