Welbeck agrees £16m Arsenal move

_77315179_danny_welbeck_pa_bodyDanny Welbeck has agreed to join Arsenal in a £16m deal, after a topsy-turvy deadline day during which his transfer to the Emirates remained in the balance until the very end.

Welbeck had attracted interest from Sunderland, Hull and Tottenham, with Spurs looking favourite to clinch a loan deal for the United striker, before Arsenal entered the race on Monday afternoon, as Arsene Wenger looked to bolster his options up-front following an injury that will keep Olivier Giroud out until December.

Welbeck, who scored 29 goals in 142 appearances at United, was initially thought to be heading to Emirates in a loan move worth around £6m, but reports suggested the 23-year-old was keen to make his move to North London a permanent and, after negotiations between the clubs, United agreed to his wish.

Having joined United’s academy when he was only eight, Welbeck has gone to develop himself into a fine player, albeit one whose poor goalscoring record has always attracted a large number of critics, even among the United fans, with some supporters growing disillusioned by Welbeck’s developments.

Welbeck’s departure, however, is likely to leave a sour taste in the mouths of a lot of supporters, who have taken to the 23-year-old since he made his debut for the club and understand the significance of having a local lad in the team.
