Young tips Di Maria to succeed at United

Di-MariaAshley Young has insisted that Angel Di Maria was a great signing for Manchester United and that he will show his real quality and become a star at Old Trafford.

Since joining United from Real Madrid for a club record fee in the summer, Di Maria has failed to reach the heights of his days at the Bernabeu and, after a promising start to the campaign, the Argentine has struggled for consistency.

Since putting on a dazzling display in United’s defeat against Leicester in September, the Argentina international has only netted twice – against Everton and Yeovil – and has looked unimpressive when deployed at the tip of the diamond in Louis Van Gaal’s 4-4-2 formation.

However, Young, believes that Di Maria will soon rediscover his form and become the player who propelled Real Madrid to a 10th European Cup last season.

“Angel was a fantastic signing,” said Young.

“Real Madrid have other top players in their team, like Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo, but he was the one who stood out for me in that team last season.

“When you add quality to a squad that already has quality it can only help us.

“We saw in the first couple of days in training just how good a player Angel is and what we can expect from him. He was definitely a great signing for us.”

Michael Carrick has also praised the Argentinian, comparing the former Real Madrid man to Ryan Giggs for his direct style of play and ability to get past players.

“There are players who have got tricks and can drop the shoulder to go past players, but he is so direct in his play,” Carrick said.

“It is almost like Giggsy used to be in many ways. When he picks that ball up he can carry it and change direction pretty quickly, so it is very tough to defend against – especially if he is going through the middle of the park.

“There aren’t many players who go through the middle. You get wide players who do it, but you don’t see many players dribble through the middle of the pitch.”
