3 Man Utd players nominated for award

Three Manchester United players have been included on the 100-player shortlist for this year’s Golden Boy award.

The full list of nominees, published on Tuesday, was headed by Borussia Dortmund duo Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland.

Rafael van der Vaart was the inaugural winner of the award in 2003, presented by Italian newspaper Tuttosport, given to the best player aged 21 and below. Wayne Rooney won it the following year.

United’s Mason Greenwood, Angel Gomes and James Garner have all been included on this year’s shortlist, though Brandon Williams notably missed out.

18-year-old Greenwood has started four Premier League games to date this season, making a further 18 appearances from the bench, scoring five goals. The attacker had also netted an impressive five goals in seven Europa League appearances (5 starts) before the disruption to football worldwide from mid-March.

Angel Gomes has been limited to two Premier League substitute appearances totalling 19 minutes this season and a further three starts in the Europa League. The 19-year-old’s future at Manchester United remains uncertain as he is yet to put pen to paper over a new contract beyond this summer.

The final Red Devil to be nominated is central midfielder James Garner. The 19-year-old came on for the final eight minutes of our 3-1 win away to Norwich City in October in what has been his only Premier League appearance so far this season. Garner has also started three times in the Europa League and made a further substitute appearance as well.
