Manchester United could sign a defensive midfielder in the upcoming transfer window to add competition to Fred and Scott McTominay, per the Daily Express.
The Red Devils have already determined their priorities for the summer transfer window, with a top-class striker and a reliable centre-back to partner Harry Maguire at the top of their list.
However, United chiefs are also exploring the possibility of adding a new defensive midfielder after Fred and McTominay have struggled for consistency this term.
Although a large portion of the transfer budget will be allocated to signing a replacement for Edinson Cavani and finding a partner for Maguire, Ole Gunnar Solskajer may add a new face to his midfield.
The first name on the list is United’s long-term target Eduardo Camavinga, who is approaching the final 12 months of his contract at Rennes.
Widely considered as one of the brightest young prospects in European football, the 18-year-old has been nothing short of outstanding since making his senior breakthrough in 2019.
Closely followed by Real Madrid and several other Europe’s top clubs, Camavinga won’t come cheaply despite his current contract situation in Ligue 1.
A more affordable option currently lies in the Bundesliga, as Dennis Zakaria continues to impress at Borussia Monchengladbach.
The Swiss international has caught the eye of Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola and is also about to enter the final year of his deal at Borussia-Park.
Good with the ball at his feet and winning it back, the 24-year-old has emerged as one of the finest defensive midfielders in Germany’s top-flight over the past few seasons.
Boubakary Soumare, who has enjoyed a fantastic season at Lille, is a target for Leeds United, but the Red Devils are also in the running for his signature.
Though a prospect of a bidding war with Leeds may deter United from making a move, the French midfielder remains a viable solution for Solskjaer’s problem.
Franck Kessie is another option, with the highly-rated AC Milan midfielder yet to pledge his long-term future to the club.
After enduring a stuttering start to his time at the San Siro, the Ivory Coast international has sparked into life with a breathtaking season.
However, it is difficult to imagine the Rossoneri allowing their irreplaceable starter to leave the club this summer.
Inter Milan’s Marcelo Brozovic is nearing his Giuseppe Meazza exit and could be another potential target for United.
The Croatian has been the architect of Inter’s play for years now and has continued to dictate proceedings under Antonio Conte this season.
At 28, Brozovic is at the peak of his powers and is also a proven deep-lying playmaker, which makes him a perfect candidate to join forces with Fred and McTominay.
Of course, for a defensive midfielder to come in, United would first need to sort out Nemanja Matic’s departure, which may prove difficult.
United also have James Garner out on loan at Nottingham Forest, although he is likely to be sent out again next season, probably to a Premier League club.
