Borussia Dortmund are in their pre-season enjoying the summer heat at Bad Ragaz training camp. Club officials believe that Manchester United missed the deadline to land Jadon Sancho at Old Trafford. If Dortmund’s words were to be believed, Sancho will stay at Dortmund next season.
This however, is comprehended as a dirty trick used by Dortmund. Dortmund made similar comments about Ousmane Dembele in 2017 but ended him selling to Barcelona for €135m. It is believed that Dortmund are being so vocal in the press because they want the €120m valuation for Jadon Sancho at any cost.
Former United player Owen Hargreaves believe so too:
“Bluff. I’m calling bluff, I think he’ll be a Man Utd player in a pretty short time,” he told BT Sport
“They are just trying to get some more money out of it. It’s the nature of the beast.
“Obviously they know United are really interested and they are pretty heavy into negotiations. I think they are bluffing and they know he is going to leave at that price.”
“They’re just after a little bit more money out of it. They are talking about £108m, which is a lot of money. He looks a brilliant player who will improve any team in world football with his assists and his goals.“
This was not welcomed by BVB CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke. He recently spoke to Abendzeitung-Muenchen and confirms that Dortmund are serious about making Sancho stay at the club.
“I read that too [Scholes and Hargreaves’ comments]. This is what experts like Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves claim. They were great footballers, and they are football experts. But I don’t know if they are transfer experts too. That Sancho stays with BVB is set in stone.”
Watzke further added about whether Sancho could submit a transfer request:
“I don’t see this danger at all. At the test match in Altach – as you know – Jadon himself explained how ‘happy he is in this special bunch’. We have a good exchange with his advisors. We acknowledge that Jadon responds very well. And he recognises that we have a good team that gives him a lot of fun playing football. He shows this joy every day now. In training. In the game.”
It will be a matter of time where we will know whether this is a poke game played between Dortmund and United or Dortmund really would stick to their point.
