Manchester United travel to Sevilla on Wednesday for the first leg of our Champions League second round tie.
The Spanish side were 2-1 winners at Las Palmas in La Liga on Saturday; the same day we were 2-0 winners at Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup.
Jose Mourinho was able to rest Jose Mourinho but otherwise started a strong side against the fellow Premier League outfit, with Romelu Lukaku scoring both goals to set up a quarter-final tie versus Brighton & Hove Albion next month.
The boss has been speaking to the media today to give a team news and injury update before our trip to Spain midweek.
Mourinho was able to confirm that we have a number of injury concerns ahead of the team that came back from 0-3 to draw 3-3 versus Liverpool in the group stage.
The Portuguese coach was able to confirm that Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Marouane Fellaini and Zlatan Ibrahimovic have next-to-no chance of playing in Spain. Mourinho told MUTV:
“Paul Pogba? I don’t know. [Marcos] Rojo, [Phil] Jones, [Marouane] Fellaini, Zlatan [Ibrahimovic], I don’t think they have any chance.”
Eric Bailly came on for the final seconds at the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday, which is excellent news, not just because he’s our best centre-back, but because fellow defenders Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones appear to be unavailable on Wednesday.
There are also doubts over captain Antonio Valencia, forward Marcus Rashford and midfielder Ander Herrera. Speaking about the FA Cup squad rotation, he added:
“I didn’t rest anyone other than [David] De Gea,” he stressed. “Can we recover some of them for Wednesday? I think [Marcus] Rashford, [Ander] Herrera, [Antonio] Valencia have a chance.”
Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera have missed out last couple of games so neither is expected to start at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium in the first leg. Ashley Young started at right-back over the weekend in place of Valencia.
Sevilla currently sit fifth in La Liga and are six points off the Champions League places. We are widely-expected to progress from this tie into the final eight of this season’s competition.
