EXCLUSIVE: Darron Gibson speaks to Red Rants at Nike launch

Darron Gibson was on hand during the grand opening of the world’s first Nike football store and gave an exclusive interview to Red Rants.

The 23-year old has became a predominant figure in Sir Alex Ferguson’s plans since last season with his starting role in the 2009 League Cup Final against Tottenham Hotspur highlighting his potential to all those outside of Carrington.

He followed that up with a wonder strike at the KC Stadium against Hull City which really set him up nicely for a return to pre-season two months later where he took full advantage of a successful 2009/2010 for the club.

Despite disappointment for the club at not recapturing the Premier League title for a fourth successive year and missing out on a third consecutive Champions League Final, Gibson had a fantastic campaign from a personal point of view as he featured heavily for The Red Devils.

Now with the new season underway, the Irish international is looking to build upon his success this season in the red of United.

He was in attendance at Manchester’s Market Street along with Rio Ferdinand and Javier Hernandez for the opening of the inaugural Nike football store and kindly spoke to us at Red Rants:

Red Rants: Coming off the 0-0 draw with City, what’s the feeling within the camp?

Darron Gibson: We were disappointed not to get the three points to be honest. I think we were the better team overall, we didn’t create many chances but like I said we deserved the win.

RR: Do you still see it as a vital point gained?

DG: Yeah obviously, I think neither team created many chances so it was a bit of a stalemate really, so you could see it as a point gained.

RR: From a personal point of view you have developed massively as a player in the last twelve months, which attributes do you think you have improved the most?

DG: Probably my fitness to be honest, coming from Wolves (Wolverhampton Wanderers) three season ago where I didn’t really play, I think my fitness was one of the reasons why I didn’t play, I don’t think I was ready to play at that level but obviously I’ve came back and the fitness coaches have worked hard with me over the past twelve months and obviously, it seems to be paying off.

RR: Do you think the manager’s influence has helped as well with his faith in yourself and the other youngsters?

DG: Yeah I think he’s always done it throughout his management career and if you’re good enough he’ll give you a chance. I think I’ve benefited massively from getting that chance as a young player.

RR: Also with you becoming an international star with Ireland, you must be fulfilling your boyhood dreams aren’t you?

DG: Yeah I supported Ireland and supported Manchester United when I was growing up so I am living my dream at the minute.

RR: Finally, United will always be in the mix for the Premier League but who do you see as our main competitors for that 19th title?

Obviously Chelsea are the main competitors. Had you asked me during the summer I would have said they were our main challengers as well and it’s no surprise that they are up there at the top at the minute, but I think were in with a really good chance of winning it again!
