Former Premier League winner says Man Utd will be title contenders with these signings

Grealish

Blackburn Rovers’ 1994-95 Premier League title-winning captain, Tim Sherwood, has said Manchester United need to make three signings to become serious title challengers next season.

We have restarted our 2019-20 campaign with a 1-1 draw away to Tottenham Hotspur and a 3-0 thrashing of Sheffield United at Old Trafford.

Since the arrival of Bruno Fernandes in January we have been on the up, whilst Paul Pogba has looked refreshed since the disruption.

A number of names have been thrown around as potential summer transfer targets for us, and here are three positions whom Tim Sherwood believes would turn us into title contenders:

Jack Grealish

Sherwood is quoted by the Daily Star as saying that we need another midfielder and that Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish would be the ideal man.

The 24-year-old has been a standout player in a poor side this season. He is certainly deserving of a move away from the club. Whether the West Midlands club will avoid relegation to the Championship remains to be seen as that could play a role in both a move away from Aston Villa and the fee.

Grealish is capable of controlling a game from the middle of the park or being a goalscoring threat down the left-hand side of the attack. Whether Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would play him down the left instead of Marcus Rashford/Anthony Martial is certainly questionable, but would a midfield trio of Grealish/Paul Pogba/Bruno Fernandes be too attacking?

A Striker

Although he hasn’t mentioned any names, the former Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa manager also believes we need another striker in our squad.

We currently have Odion Ighalo on loan, so any new signing would essentially replace the Nigerian.

Anthony Martial showed on Wednesday night he is more than ready to lead the line, whilst Marcus Rashford had been doing a good job of that earlier in the season.

18-year-old Mason Greenwood also has a lot of action under his belt this season, though has predominantly been used as a right forward instead of an out-and-out striker in the first team so far.

Sherwood said:

“I think they need another striker, I think they need Jack Grealish, who is a brilliant player to have when teams sit back against them like Tottenham did the other evening where he can occupy the tight areas and create something.”

A Centre-Back

Finally, Tim Sherwood also believes that we need another centre-back. However, the former England international believes one should be signed as cover, rather than stating we need a new partner for Harry Maguire. He added:

“I think they need another centre-back as cover. If they can get that and they have the money to be able to go out and buy them sort of players to attract them to the biggest club in the world then I think they’ll be real challengers.”

Victor Lindelof has predominantly partnered Maguire in the middle this season, with Eric Bailly in reserve. Phil Jones has also been an option here, when fit, whilst Chris Smalling has spent the season on loan in Serie A with AS Roma.
