A section of Manchester United fans have slammed the performance of Jesse Lingard following the club’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League on New Year’s Day.
The Red Devils went into the game with the chance to win a third-straight league game on the bounce and they were certainly favourites with the Gunners managing just one victory from the past 12 top-flight matches.
However, they were thoroughly dominated by the north London side in the opening half and could have easily conceded more than two goals before the half-time whistle.
After the interval, United were able to have more possession off the ball but that came to no avail with the Gunners defence comfortably dealing with the threat for the entire half.
It was a game to forget for nearly the entire team but the fans have particularly criticised Lingard, who failed to make any impact from the number 10 position against the Gunners.
As such, there has been plenty of frustration among the fans over his performance and some of them have taken to Twitter to state that he should not be anywhere near the starting lineup.
Jesse Lingard should not be anywhere near a starting line up for us. He’s misplaced every single pass apart from one in that first half. He had two easy opportunities early on to play James in on goal and got it horribly wrong too. He offers nothing.

Lingard is a social experiment. He's attempted 16 passes and has lost possession 8 times ???

Arsenal’s first win at home since October will tell you exactly where we are standing. Keeping Lingard season after season gives you a hint about what kind of management we have, well congrates to Glazers & their puppet Ole for formally making the club a Banter FC ? #OleOut pic.twitter.com/UHaIxddkm4

This is all on Ole. He didn’t have to start Lingard. Williams should automatically be our first choice LB for now and where is Garner?

#MUFC’s creative options are abysmal: Jesse Lingard, with zero goals and assists since 2018, who was replaced by the persistently underwhelming Andreas Pereira. A great attack is being starved.

The only good things that can come from this game is that Jesse Lingard & Luke Shaw's #mufc careers are done.

@Ayowolede I’m back on team ole out. This man is really saying 1 or 2 ? I’m sure he knows about pogba’s situation, we are probably going to sell him, Mctominay is out for months, Matic wants to go, Lingard is tragic, mata is slow, pereira is average, We are left with only Fred. https://t.co/8lOok9jyZs

Lingard went through the entire 2019 without a goal or an assist in the Premier League and he has struggled once again in the New Year with another below-par performance from an attacking midfield role.
United are certainly missing the presence of a creative midfielder, who can make the difference in the final third and it remains to be seen whether they are able to pursue a new recruit during the transfer window.
