Jonesin’ For Their Phil: United’s Swoop For Blackburn Boy A Worthy Investment

Coming into the summer transfer window, the expectation among most was that it’d be quite a busy summer at Manchester United, and so far, it looks very much like that will be the case, with United hitting the ground running even with Fergie on a well-earned holiday.

However, what was not expected was that United would shell out eight figures for a young and relatively unproven English center back only a year and a half after shelling out eight figures for another young and relatively unproven English center back.

With other areas, like keeper and the center of midfield, being of much more priority this summer, and with United’s recent (lack of) spending habits in mind, it would seem a little curious to put a whole lot of money on a whole lot of potential.

But it makes perfect sense, and for all that United might do this summer (and from the looks of it at this point, that will be quite a lot), United’s big investment on Phil Jones could be the best bit of business in the bunch.

In the world of right now, right now, right now that we live in, it’s understandable to immediately look at any sizable investment in terms of its immediate impact and little else. It’s not always right to do so, but it’s understandable.

Will this move justify the investment right off the bat? That’s where it loses some people because normally when you spend big money on a defender, young or old, English or not, you more often than not expect him to be a first-choice guy from the start. But unless Ferdy or Vidi both get felled by long-term injuries or abducted by aliens who support one of our rivals, that won’t be the case for a few seasons yet.

Then again, we didn’t get him to be ‘the man’ immediately, or the season after, or perhaps even the season after that one, if our incumbents have much to say about it.

True enough, interest from a couple of our fiercest rivals in Arsenal and Liverpool helped hasten United’s decision to make a move for Jones, but the fact that United did so is an indication of just the kind of talent he is and will be. Put simply, if you can spend Β£17m on someone who will be an anchor for your back line for at least a decade, then there’s no reason to let immediate (lack of) need get in the way of a decision, because when you look at the bigger picture, Β£17m is one hell of a bargain.

When you establish yourself as a starter for a Premier League club at only 18, it’s safe to say the future holds a lot of promise. And from all accounts, Jones has promise by the ton. He’s currently strutting his stuff for England’s U-21 team at the European U-21 Championships, but not only is the step up to the senior team likely to come sooner rather than later, he’s been touted by many as a potential future England captain.

It remains to be seen when Fergie will call it a day (not looking like anytime soon, if you ask me) and who will follow him on the touchline, but he’s certainly working to ensure that United are in an excellent position when he does. That’s especially the case at the back, as our back four post-Ferdinand, Vidic, and Evra could now be all but set. Early returns on the da Silva twins and Chris Smalling have been excellent, and if Fabio and Rafael can overcome their current fragility, United will have two top-class fullbacks and perhaps England’s first-choice center back pairing. Not a bad thought, is it?

And while Jones won’t be the man at the moment, that doesn’t mean he won’t make his presence felt early on. Along with the opportunities that Champions League and domestic cup matches provide, Rio needs a regular rest, and having two assured and reliable fill-ins will allow both he and Vidic to be rested when needed (or wanted) in order to have them both in top shape for the most important matches.

There will be skeptics until Jones repays United’s investment in full and a few times over, and that’s perfectly reasonable. But it’s an investment that wouldn’t have been made without the belief that he’d do just that, and from the looks of it, he’ll do that and then some.

@Moscow is my heaven: Jee, you think? πŸ™‚ See that’s what I mean about the fact that it is hard for mature and intelligent people to offer up their take on all things football when they are constantly dealing with bi polar kids who are off their meds and who attack one in such infantile and primitive ways just to get noticed. Like Owen has ever offered any of us on here anything remotely resembling substance or intelligence. At least he is consistent.

“You will never convince people to stop being xenophobic. I cant believe they let a scott manage the team for this long”

Wow, simply wow, if you really think any of this is to do with what country the glazers are from then your off your rocker mate. Really doesnt paint a very good picture of you when youve pretty much classed the majority of united supporters as mindless racists does it?

As for the rants still going on about the glazers, might seem rich me stepping in calling a ceasefire, but maybe its time we let it drop. Its obvious we will never change sides, regardless of where you sit on the issue, so why bother. The glazers are quite rightly a touchy subject which always seems to cause friction on here, so hard as it is, lets let it drop for a while. Theres always bound to be the odd remark that relates to the glazers somehow, of course there will when they own the bloody club and everything involves them somehow. But short of someone starting a “why the glazers are great” post which im just waiting for someone to create in the next few hours, if anyone casually mentions the glazers, in a good or bad way, then lets just let it lie ok.
Theres no point in us becoming divided and having daggers drawn towards eachother is there, were all united fans afterall and that tells me weve all got good taste as human beings. So whether were rather hardcore reds calling for nothing short of riots in the streets, or sitting on the fence or whatever, lets just let this lie now fellas. Theres too much venom being thrown around here, if its towards a scouser fair do’s, but another red? So im making the mighty step towards trying to calm the fuck down and call for a ceasefire here, i just hope people follow.
Should we get what im expecting though, and in the next few hours we get another “glazer is god” post from someone who needs not be named, then we know where the trouble is coming from.
Anyway call me a soft twat whose spent too much time in london and has become a southern softie, but i for one am offering a ceasefire here. Hope you join me.

“And please, do not throw the Phil Jones and De Gea examples in my face because we all know they were not bought with United or Glazer money.”

Great you have a theory that those players werent bought with Glazer money, now support that theory with something other than “we all know”.

” Meanwhile Barca, Madrid, City, Bayern, the two Milan’s and Juve seem to have the kind of money to take care of serious business”

Meanwhile all those clubs not Named Barca would kill to enjoy the success we have. Is transfer money the only thing you care about?

“We have had a few successes along the way but our transfer policy cannot compete with the big clubs of Europe and given time our club will start a decline and fall like which we have never seen.”

oh ok, so this must be the famous decline you have been predicting for the last 3-4 years. When is it scheduled to start again?

@johnsom33: Oh your so full of shit you probably believe the crap you say. Fuck you little fucking brat. If you are to illiterate to understand my rights may I suggest you go take ESL. Fucking numptee. I’m done arguing with a lame brain Neanderthal like you. You don’t want to listen to what I have to say so you argue that I haven’t said anything. Go fuck yourself, I’m done with you and I hope you are done with me as I never want you to reply or refer to me again and I will show you the same courtesy, OK. That way we both can get off each others backs.

    @johnsom33: Better question is do you read what I write? Because if you did, you would have noticed this part;

“Go fuck yourself, I’m done with you and I hope you are done with me as I never want you to reply or refer to me again and I will show you the same courtesy, OK. That way we both can get off each others backs.”

Now what part of that did your pea brain not comprehend? Like I said, take ESL to better handle the English well educated individuals like myself throw at you because obviously you tend to suffer from confusion or denial. Stop replying to me and stop using me as a reference for topic discussion. I am tired of your maliciousness and rudeness, which started this thing in the first place. You assumed I was referring to just you in a comment and decided you couldn’t handle it. And they call me paranoid. The day you have my education, work experience and life experience is the day I will take your word over mine. In the mean time I am through with our conversations so get in line with JayWire, Eddy and the others who have crossed me and gone too far. And I could care less if you could care less so spare me your asinine reply just so you can say you had the last word. Now go outside and play in your sandbox and leave me the fuck alone Judas.

@Grognard: Who are you to tell people who to write to and respond to, and what opinion they should have. As I said before, you are just another contributor to this blog and unless you can accept the fact that other people don’t share your views, why the fuck comment? You are trying to make everyone have the same views as you, not by being objective and something people can relate to, but instead brutal and forceful. Heck, I may be dead to you but the moment you said that my life, my family, and my personal issues are the reason for me having a crazy look on how things go(where instead you are right in everything, oh master of the depressing ones!). Heck, have your own fucking opinion, we all want to discuss here! But why should we be afraid to spout our views in “fear” of the Great Grognard coming on here and calling us names, attacking our life and intelligence, and imply that he is the all knowing God, just because we don’t agree with him? Listen chippy, you may be a grown up but for all we know on here you may just be a 13 year old bitch who just broke up with her boyfriend and attack everyone here in anger. If you really are old, then okey, fair enough! You may be smart, but sometimes you sound like the old crazy dude in the hospital who needs someone to wipe his tuchy and show him a paper to make him believe this is 2011. Stop acting like you rule this blog, you are only turning people against you, or making them leave this place. If you have lived a life in total agony and despair, with the feeling that no-one knows who you are, I can understand why you are doing what you are. If this is a desperate attempt to make people know who “Grognard” is, because no-one else does but you Xbox, then I can understand. But it’s still not an excuse for you to tell people to fuck off, that they are not intellingt, are delusional or that they should play in a sandbox. “Thought police” my ass, because of your attack on JayWire this blog turned hostile and there is anger all around. Because of you! πŸ™„ Congratulations, but for the sake of this blog, the people on here, and Manchester United, stick to your facts and get off your high horse. Or Unicorn, as you know them in your world.

Those of you who think they know the facts are full of it, you dont know shit πŸ˜‰ Except of course, it seems the pro Glazer few, and it is only a few of you misguided fools, thank fuck, you seem to be the only ones here embued with the FACTS. Last time i heard so many Fascts it was from the Scousers Spanish Waiter! If you ( the few ) cant see what’s as plain as day to the rest of us, well, i think a trip to Specsavers is urgently required.
Now i say this in as a lighthearted way i can, because to be honest your stance or lack of, is bemusing, to say the least! I’m not a doom and gloom merchant, but i cant ignore the realities of the current situation at our beloved club. To those of you who mention the trophy cabinet during The Malcontent Glazers rule, i say that, we’ve won all of that in spite of the Glazers not because of them. They were lucky that Fergies’ latest team was maturing just as they began their Grand Theft of Manchester United.
I dont look for answers in a comerce book of the law of Leveraged Buy Outs, i see, read and hear the opinions of those who are most directly affected by this Glazer Virus, the local Mancunian Fan. It is this source that i believe the most. Aswell as, of course, my own sensibilities which i trust emphatically πŸ™‚
50 per cent hike in ticket prices, when there’s a recession on!!!! Lack of real investment in an ageing team in pivital positions, as Onkar has already pointed out there is pre and post crash senarios to be considered here! The truth is the Glazers fortune has depreciated somewhat!! Anyone with half an ounce of sense can see whats going on in the long run with our club the longer this virus maintains control.
I’m personally not into gagging anyone on the blog,(not that i have the power!!!) everyone has the right to express themselves, no matter what their opinion. That said, when we discuss an issue such as this, where the emotions run high, you have to realise that you’re going to cop some flak for your apologist opinions!
Thanks Eddie for your maintenance of this blog!

  16. RedDevilEddy

    June 22, 2011 at 10:39 pm

@Phoenix Red: To be frank, about the ticket price increase, that happends all over the globe. It’s not only at United, but all over the Premier League. Actually, the percent of which our increase was smaller than most other teams in this League, so I don’t see how that can be used as a valid argument.

    June 22, 2011 at 11:17 pm

@RedDevilEddy:According to you that is ?!!? so, thats fine isn’t it then when MUFC was increasing its turnover through more lucrative sponsorship deals and more TV revenue, its OK then to squeeze out loyal local support by making season tickets unaffordable to a working class man???? Read past behaviour from the Virus from loyal Tampa Bay fans. Do me a favour! Comparing United to any other team in England just doesn’t cut it, re ticket prices ect. as every club has its own unique financial position. Back to the Lemmings again, so if the rest are at it, so should we?? Is this the crux of your arguement? We earn more matchday revenue by far than any other club in England, happy days for the Virus! So what do they introduce? the Automatic Cup Scheme, thats what! Leeching more off struggling ordinary working class lads in the process. Were you blind to the Green and Gold Campaign? Remember this?Sorry Frank,I thought your name was Eddy, sound isnt great, but you get the picture!

  22. tonymontanna4united

    June 22, 2011 at 11:23 pm

@RedDevilEddy: Thats all true mate, but then weve always prided ourselves on being different from the rest. After the treble in 99, every man and his dog would have gladly accepted an increase in ticket prices, because of the progress we were making on the pitch, and the fact the club was providing us with top class entertainment every week.
Not to get into whats gone on on the pitch (imo entertainment levels are down and the atmosphere is total shit) but a 50% increase in 5 years? 50 fucking percent?
Im sorry mate, but even at other sides id wager they didnt see increases of that much and even if they did, again something that needs to be considered is manchester is predominantly a working class city, as indeed is most of the north of england.
So whilst it might be the norm down south here in london, to see such high prices for tickets, its never been that way up north. We generally make less up north but in the past, tickets were always fairly priced, the beer was good and people are happier than their southern counterparts(thats still true today actually).
Ticket increases are a way of life, and i dont think anybody here would say we didnt expect it, but such a hike in such a short space of time, is just pathetically unfair, and daylight robbery as far as im concnered. The percentage of local fans getting to games today is almost non existant, hell i know this personally as my elderly grandfather as well as various cousins, nephews and uncles are in the same boat. Local passionate reds who have been around on the terraces for the best part of 60 years for some of them.
The fact that the club now lacks people like this, has an adverse effect on the atmosphere around the club, aswell as the club itself. The glazers though would call that progress. Is it fuck.

  23. tonymontanna4united

    June 22, 2011 at 11:25 pm

@Phoenix Red: Nicely put mate, and spoken like a true manc. Are you a local by the way phoenix out of curiousity?

  24. RedDevilEddy

    June 22, 2011 at 11:28 pm

@Phoenix Red: I’m not pro-Glazer mate, not by any means. But I’m not anti Glazer either, I was for a while back in 2010, even got myself an anti-Glazer wristband. But since then things have become better for this club, and I’ve not taken notice to what the Glazers have done. On the pitch it’s certanly not showed, and that is what I care most about. Compare the Glazers to Abramovic, and I have no issues! Heck, even Liverpool were fucked before that American wank went in! So although the Glazers are a virus, I wouldn’t get rid of them for someone who can possibly hurt this club even more. They’re alright in that respect.

  25. Phoenix Red

  26. RedDevilEddy

    June 22, 2011 at 11:34 pm

@tonymontanna4united: They may have hurt our club, but who is to say that anyone else would do it better? The Glazers let Manchester United be Manchester United, and that is all I could ask about. Who is to say that, even if we had the money of these Nosy Neightbours, we would use them?! I don’t like the fact that I have to use more money to go to United games, or for United material, but that is something I am willing to accept as long as they let our club be what it is. Everything gets more expensive in the world, as each day passes, so I don’t see that as a big reason to get rid of the Yanks. I am not delighted that we have the Glazers, but I’m not hating them either. I’m pleased, nothing else, because I know that although things could have been much better, they could certanly have been much worse as well!

  27. Craig Mc

    June 22, 2011 at 11:36 pm

@tonymontanna4united: The Glazers wouldn’t call it anything Tony, as they have no true ideology of football, or the tribalism and passion of long time Man Utd fans. They know nothing about loyalty and care little for it. They only see dollar signs – the dollar is their GOD. This whole debate is about PASSION VS COLD CALCULATING STATISTICS. We follow a club not a calculation, and many of the United fans here in Britain were born into their own family and the Man United RED family at the same time. They were dressed in red and the first things their Dads spoke to them was Man United never die. Today is would be LOVE UNITED – HATE GLAZER! This way of life is not known or appreciated in places like America, Canada, etc because they have their own passions related to other things. In Britain we are National football zealots, and every foreign player that ever comes to this country to play their football will all tell you that they love the passion and feeling, the emotions and partizanisms of British football. I am not saying every one should have the same set of appreciations, different countries – different cultures, but this is what this whole debate has brought forth – the local neighbourhood depth of fervour for their club, and the hatred towards anyone who we see threatening it!

I however just look at the changes ive seen during their regime, the debt that still hangs over our head like a dead weight, the division they have caused between the fans, and the total fucking secrecy with everything to do with OUR club and OUR future, and i cannot trust these tossers one iota. So when they and that sell out tosser gill, come out and say everything is ok, i think the opposite. Im sick of reading our yearly finance reports and seeing us still in the red, by hundreds of millions and seeing hundreds of millions of pounds going out of the club, that could have been spent on more worthwhile things than on paying off their bloody loans.
