Moyes looks completely starstruck. Are we sure Mata is not simply signing his autograph for Moyes?

@colver: … and you sound completely gobsmacked that Moyes has signed a really good player.
No surprise to me!! Time to rethink the line of rhetoric, eh??

What rhetoric? Signing Mata does not prove Moyes is up to the job. He just got lucky because while Chelsea did not want to sell to us, they needed the money and no other club in the world was willing to pay £37M. Plus by all accounts we doubled his salary.

As Manchester City in their early days showed if you throw enough money around eventually you will be able to sign a reject from a big club. And sometimes it can work out. But it can only get you so far.

The real challenge is finding players who may not have the star billing but can nevertheless be very effective team players and fit like a glove.

I will change my tune if Moyes puts in a better showing in the summer transfer window and actually brings in some players that strengthen our weak areas rather than doubling up in the one area of the pitch where we are sorted-even allowing for a bit of uncertainty over whether Rooney will stay at the club.

And also signing Mata is not enough. Moyes needs to show the tactical ability to integrate Mata into a system that includes Januzaj, Van Persie and Rooney.

@colver: It’s not an easy task. We bought a No. 10 (one more) but still our team needs a CM who can run tirelessly. It’s the same case with Kagawa. You can use Kagawa but who is the one who will cover, Carrick? Or Cleverley?

So, it’s four players upfront. Possibly Mata 10, RvP right, Januzaj left, Rooney 9. Who will cover? And our backups seem great. Nani, Zaha (left-right), Kagawa (10) , Welbeck (9)…… and Valencia (right), Young (whatever, he is so talented) and the Pea.

We need no more flair or exotic players. We need a strong CM (maybe 2 of them) plus a left back.

@colver: It is a strange signing and money being talked about is crazy. Doubling wages if true is insane for someone who was looking at an exit. hope that is incorrect news as it will gets others bargaining hard with United including Rooney at 300K per week. I am not sure who will pay him these wages even if he leaves? Only Real or PSG/Monaco probably. Moyes does seem a bit star struck I would agree.

Where will Mata play? He cannot play in a 4 4 2 so unless Moyes wants to go 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 Mata wont fit with Rooney and RVP both. Big test for Moyes in the coming months. If he fails to improve on the position by end of season, I might be inclined to ask for a change in guard.

Without a CM this transfer window is a bust. There is absolutely no excuse for not getting a CM. They’ve moved around, midfielders that would have been fantastic at United have been sold. Apparently we made no attempt whatsoever. Mata is fantastic, in a way, it’s heartening to see him. But there is something bizarre, and stupid, about paying 37 million for a player that is not absolutely needed, and not even going in at all for players that are moving for like 12 million.

It defies all reason. If you can find 37 million for mata, spend 50 million right now, and land a good CM. We could have one. We could have the midfielder we need, right now, if we put 50 million on the table. And not doing that is stupid.

If January ends with no CM coming in, and Carrick out injured, that is inexcusably poor business, another wasted transfer window.

@Ben: vidal in the summer is worth the wait. bring back nick powell as cover. fellaini will get better now that the pressure is on the club record sighing. with rvp and roony back fit we can realistically get a cl spot without having to punch above our weight.

add a cb lb and a great cm now and how much further up the table could we go this term than 4th? maybe 2nd?

i just think its too late to go for 21leagues this year. so why not wait for some stunners in summer instead of picking up some good enoughs now?

      • Ben

        January 27, 2014 at 12:12 am

I’m not talking good enoughs. I’m talking, good enough for the future of the club. There is not a single CM right now on this team that we want to build a team around. That’s really, really, really bad. Carrick isn’t the future, and Fletcher isn’t the future. Cleverley sure as hell isn’t the future. Right now, we need to start a comprehensive retooling of this side, and it starts in the middle of the park. And as much as humanly possible, we need that to be done smoothly.

We probably need a complete fresh start in the middle of the park, which means probably 3 CM competing for spots, with room for 1-2 youth midfielders trying to break in. The sooner we start, the better.

If we buy in 2 CM, in the summer, we have a team with 100 percent different feel and dynamic. If we get one now, there is progress, and continuity. There are plenty of spots for CM on this team. Bring one in now, start the process.

I don’t want another season thrown away so that a completely reworked side can gel together.

Bring in a central midfielder now. Right now. Start the change now, so that next year it’s not starting completely from scratch, we have something to work from, and the team has at least the beginning of unity. If we put off every central midfield buy till the summer, that is one more season pissed away for absolutely no reason..

If we put 50 million (an absurd amount), even 40 or 30 million, on the table right now, we could start to right this ship. And there is no reason not to. Not doing is being content to take our time while other teams solidify their gains and get harder to beat, and more confident. We can’t afford that.

So if this window closes and no central midfielder comes in, say goodbye to next season too, and don’t be surprised if we gorge on wingers, leftbacks, and bring in 1 fucking central midfielder, essentially damning the season after that too. It’s completely unnecessary, but I can easily see us pissing away 3 seasons for no reason at all.

Pay the money. Whatever the cost, pay it. It’s not negotiable. It’s not a case of maybe. We need it now, pay whatever it takes. Period. Anything less is failure.

@Ben: You need to show some patience. It will take several years for United to contend again at the highest level.
Even if the Glazers release unlimited funds (which I doubt), you have to pick and choose from available players and ones that are suitable for the team.
I think Mata was bought to convince other players (and Rooney) that we mean business, and so that is not a good example of what we should expect next. If Moyes is allowed to continue to rebuild, this could be a very exciting period for us all, especially if we start to strengthen the areas that are so in need of it.

          January 27, 2014 at 4:25 am

@Ben: We’ve had this need for how long now???

Moyes needs a lot of patience, about a lot things, buying in a good CM is not amongst those.

I keep saying this, but it’s true: right now, in this market, there is lots of talent. Talent we could buy. If we paid. That’s a fact. This is not a time to be subtle, to find a bargain, to be overly specific. Even the best of players, vary. They have ups and downs, and they at some times play different ways. The idea, that this CM we are looking for is some monolithic archetype, some majestic model for one exact skill set is waaaaaaay off. Put 30, 40, 50 million down, get the central midfielder we need right now.

I think we are going after 2 or 3 cms now but their clubs are telling us yes in summer.

I will be dissapointed if we don’t bring in another player but I think next term is going to be exciting and expensive

    • Redrich

      January 27, 2014 at 4:50 am

@gator: Pretty much agree with that.
Biz maybe done in this window.
It’ll be a scrap for 4th place, but with Rooney and RVP back and now, Mata, I like our chances.

    • Ben

      January 27, 2014 at 5:06 am

@gator: If you gave them 40 million, they would sell.

Cabaye costs 25 millions. He would be a fantastic signing. MUCH better than Fellaini. He’s garaunteed quality. He’s exactly what we need. Even if he’s not a dream midfielder, he’d be great cover even if we brought more in. A much better cover than either Carrick, or Fletcher, or Cleverley. He’s on offer. We could have him right now. That’s 1 single example. There are many many many more out there. Already, targets I thought looked good have moved. Other teams are buying midfielders. I have no belief at all in the ‘there are no midfielders for sale’ like of argument. If Real Madrid NEEDED a midfielder, would they get one? Or City? Or any other team that actually spends money? You need a midfielder, you pay the cost. There is nothing else to it. Cabaye would be fantastic to go along with Mata. Put the money on the table, stop making this team wait. We’ve waiting long enough.

The whole time the window was closed, Moyes had to scout and line up a deal. It’s inexcusable to get here, and fail, AGAIN, to get a midfielder we need. Nothing, no signing, makes that better. Mata? Okay…. and the midfielder?

Until we get the midfielder, every single signing United picks up get the response from me ‘….. and the midfielder?’, and deservedly so. Get it done. Nothing is looking up for this team until that happens.

        January 27, 2014 at 6:48 am

@Ben: Cabaye? £25 mil? Good deal. More overpriced drek. Exactly what we’re missing.

          January 27, 2014 at 8:16 am

Cabaye is excellent. Look at his stats, they are phenomenal. Calling a player that talented drek is insane. He’s very very talented. He’s at the top of his game right now. He could walk right into this team, and make it much better, much more dynamic. How is that not enough? It’s more than any central midfielder on the team is doing.
