Man United didn’t want Cavani in the summer – club considering a replacement

According to The Athletic‘s Laurie Whitwell, Manchester United don’t think Edinson Cavani is a long-term answer for Manchester United forward enigmas.

Manchester United announced the signing of Cavani on the deadline day of the summer transfer window.

As The Athletic revealed, United agreed on paying the Uruguayan striker a salary of €9m per year (without bonuses).

The move, in particular, was a shock for the general fans.

The deadline day deal again was an illustration of United’s bewildered planning when it comes to adding new names to the roster.

A late acquisition for Edinson Cavani meant he had to self-isolate himself for the next 14 days, which is why it looked nothing but panic buy from United’s perspective.

Had Cavani been in the inaugural plans of Manchester United, they would have signed it at the initial stage of the summer transfer window.

And he won’t be missing the first few games for Man United or lacking the match sharpness then.

Speaking to the latest edition of The Ornstein & Chapman Podcast, Whitwell claimed that Manchester United don’t see a long-term answer in Edinson Cavani.

He also insisted that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is still considering making a move for Erling Braut Haaland in 2022 when the Norwegian’s release clause of €60m will kick in. Haaland will be Cavani’s replacement.

Manchester United have signed Cavani on a one-year contract, with an option to extend it for a further year. From the fence, it does seem that the 33-year-old striker still possesses the knack to perform on the bigger stages.

Though, we have wait and see how the career of Manchester United new no. 07 pans out under the supervision of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Our take

United’s decision to sign Cavani was out of panic. They needed to fill in the no.7 slot and make a statement. However, the Uruguayan isn’t a long-term option. He is aging and his injury records suggest he’ll be Anthony Martial’s backup. United need a superstar signing. Haaland is a name which could fill the void. However, there are better options in the market United could poach.
