Man Utd in pole position to sign £88m star

The winter transfer window opens in less than two weeks and Manchester United have been linked with signing a number of players in January.

One of those is Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann.  The French international was strongly linked with joining us this past summer but the Spanish side’s transfer embargo prevented a move from going through.

Atleti have since agreed a deal with Chelsea that will see Diego Costa join the Madrid-based side on 1 January, meaning they could be open to selling Griezmann.

The 2013-14 La Liga champions are furious with Barcelona ‘tapping up’ the attacker, and as a result, would prefer to sell Antoine Griezmann to us, according to the Mirror.

Atletico Madrid have filed an official complaint to FIFA following Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu’s meeting with the player’s representatives to discuss a move to the Spanish giants.

The report in the Mirror claims that they would prefer to sell Griezmann abroad as a result.  All of this news comes despite the French star only signed a new contract this past summer, keeping him at the club until 2022.

Griezmann has an £88 million release clause in his latest contract which is a fee that neither Manchester United or Barcelona should bat an eyelid at.

The 26-year-old has been a goal machine for both Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad in La Liga and has been linked with a move away from the Spanish capital for more than a year now.  It appears to be only a matter of time before Griezmann leaves – perhaps this January or over the summer.
