From Italy: Manchester United agree £62m deal for 20-goal midfielder, medical scheduled

Manchester United are reported to be on the cusp of signing midfielder Bruno Fernandes from Sporting after agreeing on a deal worth £62m (€70m). According to Italian outlet Corriere Dello Sport, the Red Devils are said to have reached an agreement in terms of the transfer fee with Sporting and Fernandes is ready to fly to England for the medical before finalising his move. The same publication cites that Fernandes’ move to Old Trafford won’t be hampered by the position of Paul Pogba, given Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has been identified as the candidate, who could replace the France international this summer. United currently find themselves in need of a creative midfielder in their ranks with the likes of Fred and Andreas Pereira yet to complement Pogba in terms of making things happen from the centre of the park. The signing of Fernandes should be able to solve the concern based on his exploits for Sporting last season, where he contributed 20 goals and 11 assists in the Primeira Liga alone. A repeat of the same level of performance appears doubtful with the added difficulty of the Premier League, but he would still provide a goalscoring threat from the midfield, which was missing at different stages of last season where Pogba struggled to find the consistency. Manchester United recently completed their pre-season tour of Australia and the Far East where they preserved a perfect record with victories in each of their four friendly matches. They are now scheduled to face Kristiansund and AC Milan in the remaining pre-season fixtures before welcoming Chelsea for the Premier League opener at Old Trafford on August 11.
