According to SPORTBILD, Manchester United have made contact with the agent of RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner regarding a summer move for the Germany international.
Werner has become one of Europe’s most sought-after strikers and in the current season, he has contributed 27 goals and 12 assists across all competitions for Leipzig.
A recent report revealed that United have added Werner to their shortlist of targets to strengthen the centre-forward department and they are now understood to have made contact with the player’s representative.
Still, a deal remains far from straightforward, considering the competition from league rivals Chelsea while the forward is said to have the preference to join Liverpool.
In recent months, Jurgen Klopp’s side have been fancied to sign Werner but a recent report from The Mirror has suggested that the Merseyside outfit may not spend on any high-profile players this summer.
Should this be the case, United can be regarded as genuine candidates to sign the former Stuttgart graduate, who has a £51m release clause in his contract, which expires on June 15.
Anthony Martial has been Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s preferred choice for the striker’s role in the Premier League this season and he has fared impressively 16 goals and five assists from 34 outings.
Still, there have been occasions where he has been slow in reacting to scoring opportunities in the box and there is definitely the need for more competition upfront.
Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood have also featured in the position but the former excels when playing on the left wing while the latter is only at the beginning phase of his career.
January loan signing Odion Ighalo has caught the eye with four goals from his eight appearances but Solskjaer has yet to trust the 30-year-old with a league start.
Regardless of whether Ighalo signs permanently or not, United seem keen on landing a new striker and it will be interesting to see, if they can strike a transfer agreement for Werner’s services.
