Manchester United close to finalising Raphael Varane transfer

Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane is reportedly close to joining Manchester United this summer.

Varane is stepping into the final year of his contract with the Los Blancos and could leave on a free transfer in 2022.

Real Madrid wants the defensive stalwart to extend his stay but the two parties are yet to reach an agreement.

According to ESPN, the Red Devils are close to finalising a deal to bring Varane to Old Trafford.

The La Liga giants will rather cash in on the player in this window than see him walking away for free.

Even with 12 months remaining on his contract, Madrid valued him at around €70 million.

But United are confident to get their transfer target for a fee in the region of €50m

Red Rants view

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to bolster his defence which was guilty of leaking goals this past season.

Victor Lindelof is too easily outmuscled in the centre, making United’s defence vulnerable.

Bu contrast, Varane is a top-class defender who has won it all at Madrid and would be a robust partner for Harry Maguire.

It would be a strange decision from Los Blancos if they allow Varane to leave the club, keeping in mind that veteran defender Sergio Ramos has already announced his exit.

There is no doubt that the 28-year old would boost United’s hopes of challenging for the title.

However, his arrival could potentially force Eric Bailly or Lindelof to ponder their future at the Theatre of Dreams.
