Manchester United confirm signing of 25-year-old playmaker on a five-and-a-half year deal

Manchester United have officially confirmed that Bruno Fernandes has joined the club from Portuguese side Sporting. The 25-year-old has put pen-to-paper on a five-and-a-half year contract with the Red Devils with the option for a further 12 months.

“Manchester United is delighted to confirm the signing of Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Clube de Portugal. Bruno signs on a five-and-a-half year contract, with an option to extend for a further year,” a statement read on the club’s official website.

Fernandes is expected to make his debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Saturday evening. It remains to be seen whether he is picked from the starting lineup, given he will take sometime to get to grips with the style of play under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Fernandes is presently United’s solitary signing of the January transfer window but the club are working hard to bring in a striker on a temporary basis before the 11pm deadline on Friday night. A number of names including Islam Slimani and Odion Ighalo have been mentioned but of late, Salomon Rondon has emerged as an option.

As per The Times, the former West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle United striker could be available on a short-term loan from Dalian Pro for the season. The Venezuelan certainly appears a better choice compared to Slimani and Ighalo, given he was plying his trade in the Premier League last season, where he bagged 11 goals for Newcastle on loan.

Manchester United have won their previous two games in all competitions. Their most recent victory was a 1-0 win over Manchester City in the second leg of the League Cup semi-final. Still, they could not make it to the final of the competition as they failed to recover the two-goal deficit from the 3-1 loss at Old Trafford in the first leg.
