Manchester United given boost on Dayot Upamecano transfer

RB Leipzig chief Olivier Mintzlaff has given an encouraging transfer update on Dayot Upamecano who has been on the radar of Manchester United.

The 22-year-old has been earning rave reviews for his performances in the Bundesliga, with the defender racking up 14 league appearances and scoring a goal this season.

The French footballer attracted the attention of some of the top European clubs after his impressive display in Leipzig’s Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid last season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are in the market for a centre-half and they have identified the France international as a good fit for their needs.

And now the German club’s CEO has conceded that they will always be open to offers if “it makes financial sense.”

He told SportBild: “We have a squad that is very broad in terms of quality.

“So we will sell top performers again if it makes financial sense and we can cope with it from a sporting point of view.

“When I think of Werner, [Matheus] Cunha, [Naby] Keita or [Diego] Demme, we’ve already made a lot of money and still made progress in terms of the sporting side.

“Overall, we have invested a lot in our team, no question about that. But look: the current squad had a market value of less than €250 million when the individual players made their debut.

“And if we now take the current market value, we are at around €550 million. You have to take this plus of over €300 million into account when you talk about investments. We are creating value with our path.”

Upamecano first joined Leipzig from Austrian club RB Salzburg in the 2017 winter window in a deal worth £9 million, signing a four-and-a-half year contract with the German side.

The talented central defender has gone on to make 134 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals and creating two assists.

The 22-year-old also penned a new deal with the Bundesliga side in the summer that will now keep him at the Red Bull Arena until 2023.
