Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar has been one of the brightest prospects available this summer. Lyon’s run to the Champions League semi-finals has brought massive publicity to the club and their star players.
But, the financial difficulties due to the coronavirus crisis have left the club no option but to sell some of their players. One of these players could be Aouar.
The race for the midfielder’s signature has largely been dominated by English clubs with Juventus an exception in that list.
The front-runner for the Frenchman’s signature have been English side Arsenal. Though, the lack of funds is a big concern for the Gunners. This has also been confirmed by Lyon sporting director Juninho.
This may be the best time for Manchester United to enter this race. Earlier this season, MEN reported that Aouar is a perfect alternative for Jack Grealish.
Grealish signed a new contract extension instead of joining United.
Aouar is in the media spotlight for the better part of two seasons. His performances for Lyon have seen him linked to nearly all of Europe’s premier sides. Big European teams like Arsenal, Manchester City, Juventus and Real Madrid were linked to Aouar at some point in this transfer window.
His style of playing shares some striking similarities to the kind of services United were envisioning from Grealish.
Aouar is a midfielder who likes to dribble and approach the box. He is not afraid to take on his opponents and has an enviable vision and passing range.
In a nutshell, Aouar is quite simply the kind of player who makes things happen.
The arrival of Bruno Fernandes in January has given the team an attacking edge but questions remain about the lack of depth in the midfield. The signing of Donny Van de Beek would assuage those concerns for some time yet the Red Devils still remain short of a player who can take over if something happens to Bruno Fernandes.
United’s injury record in the past few seasons is a prime reason for the club to sign a player like Aouar. If the likes of Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira leave the club, signing Aouar becomes a no-brainer. And United are ready to offload both Lingard and Pereira.
The lack of money is a concern for Arsenal. This has also been confirmed by Lyon President Jean-Micheal Aulas.
As per Fabrizio Romano, Aouar is going to cost a fee close to €60m.
This is cheaper than what United were being quoted for Grealish.
