Manchester United open talks with Brighton for Ben White

Manchester United are interested in signing Brighton & Hove Albion defender Ben White.

According to the TEAMtalk, United have opened negotiations with Brighton over a possible summer transfer to Old Trafford.

White emerged as one of the most coveted young centre-backs in English football on the back of a remarkable loan spell at Leeds United last season.

Although he has had a bit of a rollercoaster Premier League campaign so far, the Brighton prodigy has earned a fair share of praise for his performances in a three-man backline.

Despite making a name for himself in a different system, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sees the 23-year-old as the ideal partner for Harry Maguire.

Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly have both struggled for consistency and the Norwegian is keen to secure the services of a better option.

Kalidou Koulibaly, Raphael Varane, Jules Kounde and Ibrahima Konate are all on Solskjaer’s shortlist.

However, White could be a more affordable option if Brighton are relegated from the Premier League.

With Brighton fighting tooth and nail to keep their head above water, United are lining up an offer after tracking White’s progress this season.

Graham Potter’s men currently sit level on points with 18th-placed Fulham, although they have a game in hand on Scott Parker’s side.

However, if the Seagulls fail to preserve their top-flight status, they could be forced to offload some of their star players in the summer.

White, who has several clubs interested in acquiring his signature, may spearhead the exodus, with United in the driving seat to beat the competition.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was hoping to add the English defender to his defensive unit last summer.

However, the Reds’ bid fell short of Brighton’s demands, and they have subsequently signed Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies instead.
