Manchester United plan late move to sign 27-year-old playmaker

Manchester United are planning a late move to secure the services of Christian Eriksen from Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur, a report from Sky Sports News claims.

The Red Devils have not pursued a single midfielder during the course of the summer transfer window and that has been surprising from the fact that both Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini have left Old Trafford over the past six months without being replaced.

As such, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has very little time remaining before Thursday’s transfer deadline to sort out the concern and Sky Sports News reports that United could make a late attempt to pursue Eriksen’s signature.

The Denmark international has less than 12 months remaining on his current deal at Spurs and a separate report from The Telegraph has indicated that the north London side could be willing to accept a package of below £50m for the playmaker this summer, considering his contract standoff with the club.

While some United fans may argue that a defensive midfielder is more necessary with the recent struggles of Nemanja Matic, it cannot be denied that the club would consider a move for a player of Eriksen’s calibre, given the lack of sufficient creativity from the centre of the park.

The Dane has normally operated in an advanced number 10 position at Spurs, but he also has the versatility of featuring on the right or left side of a three-man midfield. It remains to be seen whether United are able to get a deal over the line for the Dane with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy tending to prove a tough negotiator over the years.
