Manchester United have sent a heartfelt message of condolence to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp whose mother, Elisabeth, passed away last month, aged 81.
The 53-year-old was unable to attend her funeral in Germany on Tuesday owing to COVID-related travel restrictions but said that a memorial service would be held later.
“The fact that I can’t be at the funeral is due to the terrible times. As soon as the circumstances allow, we will hold a wonderful commemoration that is appropriate.”
Many fans took to social media to offer their condolences to Klopp and his family. Liverpool’s Twitter page posted a picture of their manager with the caption: “You’ll Never Walk Alone, Jürgen”.
United retweeted the Reds’ post with the message: “Heartfelt condolences to Jürgen and his family, from everyone at United”.

Marcus Rashford, who has become a larger-than-life/larger-than-club figure because of his campaign to ensure free lunches for school children during the pandemic, also tweeted.
Liverpool have endured a miserable period lately, but it’s not even close to what Klopp and his family have been going through.
United and Liverpool share one of the fiercest rivalries in football history. However, there are times when that should be put aside and this was certainly one of those instances.
It truly is a very classy gesture from the Red Devils and one that surely will be appreciated by football fans.
Liverpool’s next match is against Leicester City this weekend and there’s a good chance of us seeing a minute’s silence being held in memory of Klopp’s late mother.
R.I.P. Elisabeth Klopp.
